I don't buy into the idea that EVs are being used to control travel, but cobalt mining doesn't seem cleaner than the oil industry, and EVs aren't the environmental panacea they are presented to be. That cleaner future, I think, is still a long ways down the road.

Like 90% of the mines like for the big companies are commercially operated and just normal mines. Then there are the illegally and family operated ones, because people are poor and want find ways to make money. Big companies don't source from them. That's the Congo point. The EV point is utter BS. Gas cars use similar amounts of rare earths. The cheaper EVs all have 0 cobalt because they're LFP. Expensive EVs with Nickel battery compared to electronics have also a much lower cobalt percentage.

Simple solution: Let's learn the art of saving fuel. 1. Turn off the engine if not in use for more than 2 mins 2. Drive in correct gear and correct RPM. 3. Maintain your vehicle and tyre pressure. 4. Always accelerate gently. (Very safe and efficient).

Paiki Sharma is a good host/presenter. Always e-cars get the big blame. Lithium and cobalt are in many things. E-scooters, e-bikes, laptops, phones, toys, electric tools and so on. Cobalt is for example also in colors for painting. And don't think that diesel or gas cars are a clean business and do not hurt human rights. We are consuming and wasting way too much. LESS or even radical less is the way to go. Going on foot or riding a regular bicycle is making less problems. Building and riding evs or gas or diesel cars is always making big problems.

It doesn't seem that the main problem here are temp workers freely choosing to work in the mines. There seem to be 2 main problems: - Congo's economy needs to be diversified so that there are more choices of where to work - Payment for the work needs to be negotiated because they are being severely underpaid We reflexively look at the horrible conditions and want to ban the mines. I can wholly confirm that Lithium-based batteries are singularly the stuff of gross, opportunistic easy-solution led entrepreneurship: as in TESLA grabbing mobile phone cells and dumping them in a car, no concern of how much that costs (more sadly, as a result, today everybody follows suit , this resulting in making electric cars ever more expensive, almost now a status symbol for largely similar-minded or else highly impressionable users who do not see beyond the hype). Our company, and indeed many serious but otherwise small players out there , have long urged about and against this distortion of truth, putting in the hard work to develop more sociable solutions (Ni -mH , hybrid flow and indeed Pb Acid cheaper and more sustainably viable technology) but are simply laughed at, overshadowed by heavily hyped consumerism and capitalistic corporate ethic (not only Tesla and the likes, but Uber, Amazon, etc).And as often , any real concerns about the underlying damage and indeed ultimately cost that these fast solutions entail (eg dehumanisation of young people in poverty-stricken countries all over Africa) only becomes a distant priority . Utter shame that people know (Tesla, MB, even Volvo) but still go ahead, criminal complicity no less.

The issue is with the governance in these African countries. Developed countries have been exploiting Africa for resources. This is not new. Battery minerals are almost completely recyclable. It is just a matter of extracting minerals from old batteries ,purifying them and re-using them. An ex-Tesla employee is working on setting such a business. There is a video about him on KZbin. Very simple math; The only few technologies that have better benefits are Hydrogen cars. We need more hydrogen plants and more nuclear power plants.

The fuel cell does not start producing electricity from H2 instantly. It takes quite some time. Till then the car runs on batteries. Not to mention price of H2 is sky high, it is significantly difficult to transport and a H2 filling station is expensive to setup. Given the huge demand of EVs I don't think people mind the charge times.

Yeah, but its also about people's over expectation of luxury. American's and Europeans want air conditioned, 500-1000 BHP EVs... to become environment friendly??? Truth is EVs are not supposed to be affordable, companies like Tesla are loss making companies who barely make it by selling EV credits (yeah, US, UK gov runs EV credit schemes). Forget cobalt. If entire Africa today stops exporting all it minerals Europe, China and USA can forget about half of the things in their daily lives (from fruits ... to semiconductors ... to Gold and diamonds)

Metals can be recycled. Oil&Gas cannot. If you would say that we all should stop buying cars and stop wasting resources I am fully with you. But oil is a no go !

@@t.d.5804 I own salvage yard with 1 million wrecked cars all oil and gas is drained from car before goes on yard, we cannot buy full EV vehicles becuz u cannot drain lithium out

You forgot about lead batteries and catalytic converter plus the fact that a gas vehicle will pollute everyday for 100 years or more. Gas vehicles built in 1920 still pollute even to this day...
