He is losing money with it. The entire premise behind your comment is completely flawed. Elon Musk took the patented technology his company had built for cars, and he opened sourced all of it. That means any other car company in the world can copy that technology absolutely free without paying rights to use Tesla's patented technology. He encouraged are all car companies to use whatever they wanted as long as it is in good faith and they are not just making a copy of a Tesla. There is no way somebody who was worried about making money would do something that would cost his company potentially billions of dollars over the next decades
