I can't believe I got laid off from an electric utility company. Nothing special about electricity or green energy... don't get excited.

Maybe Elon should start a utility company….cause tripling electricity capacity will take decades and I couldn’t even venture a guess as to cost….I was an electrical utility construction supervisor in Alberta for years….he would first need armies of nonexistent linemen, PSE’s and electrical engineers. He is right about the step down transformers, we used to source ours from Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea…took one year for a single transformer….now imagine every one wanting one…..good luck.

It's hard to imagine a tripling of electricity capacity without nuclear being heavily involved. It might be worth looking at regulating small nuclear devices a little differently. If the amount of fuel is really small, the safety concerns are nowhere near as severe. I can imagine an economy of plug and play shipping container sized reactors having use in heavy industry. If they're convenient enough to transport, all the servicing and production could be done off site, in a central facility. So, there's an opportunity for an economy of scale there. And, if they're that size, then they could even power their own transportation! In terms of the physics involved, nuclear technology looks the most promising, to me. It's a very different source of energy that's an order of magnitude more concentrated than even the most powerful chemicals. I think it's a shame we haven't figured out a better way to harness it, yet. It seems like there's a lot of solvable problems in this area of energy production.

I think there’s a lot of low hanging fruit in replacing inefficient appliances with efficient ones in homes. For example, we replaced our electric water heater with a hybrid one in February of this year. Then in June we bought our first EV, a model Y. Between those two changes our electricity bill/usage is unchanged overall. Which would be the same as if neither of those upgrades ever happened, except now my transportation is electrified. We are currently doing some remodeling on our home such as new windows, replacing the sheathing on our south wall with zip r for more insulation, and after that we will look at a new AC that is much more efficient. Last, we just got solar panels which will reduce our strain on the grid by even more and even charge our EV directly by the sun.
@KidHorn7001
@KidHorn7001 6 ай бұрын
I got a hybrid hot water heater years ago. I bought it in an adjacent county that had a $500 rebate at point of sale and then got another $500 from my supplier by submitting the receipt. it cost me about $200. Plus $400 to install and haul away the old one. Works great. It keeps my basement utility room very cold. I bought a Model Y and 3 this year. My electricity provider put me on a special plan where I pay more during peak hours M-F 12-8 and pay less at all other times. So, I do all my heavy electrical stuff, like EV charging, running the dryer and dish washer, during non peak hours. I don't notice much difference in my electric bill. it's like getting free gas.

Terrible for everyone but Tesla. The old automakers can't make good EV's. You can't put a battery in an old style car and have it work out, just like you can't stick wings on a caterpillar and call it a butterfly. It has to be designed from the ground up with new assembly techniques etc. Tesla makes 15 - 20% profit on their EVs. The legacy automotive companies lose money on every EV. Ford's loss per vehicle for each F-150 lightening is 75%. As interest rates have gone up Tesla has cut prices many times in the last year so that the car payment would still be affordable and that is why they are selling every car they make (for a profit). The Tesla Model Y is the best selling car model on earth - electric or otherwise. Tesla will be delivering the first Cybertruck on the 30th. They are building a factory for their $25,000 coupe which will be selling within a few years. They will sell almost 2 million vehicles this year and plan to reach 20 million per year by 2030.

Electric vehicle sales are languishing though. EVs are piling up on dealer lots. The vast, vast majority of cars on the road are still ICE. That is not going to change in 2 years. If anything there will be a push to scale back government mandated EVs as the consumers will start to buck under the strain. Batteries are not an economical option for energy storage. The cost of lithium ion batteries has fallen almost 90% in the last 10 years. There is projected to be another 28% decline in costs over the next three years. That is the main reason that Tesla EVs are so affordable now. Tesla has also removed ALL rare earth elements from their motors and reduced the cost and increased performance at the same time. Together these will result in a Tesla EV roughly 50% cheaper than current models. They just broke ground on a factory to build their $25,000 model. All of this cost reduction applies to the grid batteries too. Taken together with super cheap solar it will make a huge difference to the grid. Also don't forget that every EV car has a massive battery in it. Bi-directional energy transfer from your car to your house will be commonplace. Your car will be able to provide backup power to your house for three to seven days depending on the car and your load!

Let's make all cars electric. All the Dino Juice we didn't burn, let's use it to generate electricity. Problem solved. Irony aside, there are lots of challenges ahead, from energy generation to storage. I don't think we have the luxury of battery storage, since we need the batteries for the electrification of cars/transports. Fusion is still too far. ATM there are countries decommissioning nuclear power plants and replacing them with coal power plants for the short term. So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised they ramp up fossil fuels for energy generation instead of decreasing it.

This man is extremely intelligent but he has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to the electric grid. I've been running the electric grid for 16 years, distribution and transmission. Maybe in some pockets of the US he's correct but otherwise he's wrong. I'm not on a podcast so I can't explain why by posting a comment on KZbin but trust me he's wrong.

Did you not even listen? Its because he knows all transports besides rockets will eventually be electric and heat will also become electric. Therefore increasing the demand, which we currently cannot sustain.

This much fancied electric future comes at a cost--to biology, too. Most of the biological research on electromagnetic fields in the last 30 years has been showing a propensity for these fields to impact the functioning of the body's cellular processes. Oxidative stress, formation of free radicals, neurological and genetic effects--they are all part of the downside. And no one is paying attention to mitigating the potential for those effects in the design of electric cars, the delivery of electricity, or in communication technologies.

@@StrongerThanBigfoot no engine runs forever. I have a cummins engine in my truck which is one of the best passenger diesel engines made and that is rated to just last 300K miles before needing extensive repairs.

Yes sadly this is true for many areas of the world but most use natural gas now anyways, not diesel. Also batteries need to improve a lot, which has not been happening, just tricking upwards in range every year by few miles is not enough.
@jamesspencer641

Not true. Diesel generation on the grid is almost non-existent. Only used to start up much bigger generators once in a great while. You must be thinking of natural gas.
