Elon Musk recently explained why Tesla is UNIQUELY positioned to be a world leader in robotics and why it is nearly impossible for a startup to accomplish what Tesla can. In this video I discuss what Elon revealed.

Optimus and the vision based AI they are perfecting with FSD will position them perfectly for manufacturing. A Gigafactory will essentially be run by a skeleton crew of humans with robotics driving down the cost of production to essentially just materials and a bit of energy for charging, they technically won't even need much climate control or lighting in a factory run by robots. There are plenty of other manufacturers that would jump on using Optimus and vision based AI also.

Why not let Optimus loose in the Gigafactory, watching the workers there, and finding out which jobs they can do? It all depends on how smart they are. The easy thing is to be like an industrial robot with vision, just repeating exactly what a human did. But we want them to understand what they are doing and why, and improve the way they do it by themselves. Idealy, they would omlu have to be told what to do, and figure it out by themselves. I guess it will take some development until they start giving suggestions about how to improve the factory, though!

I am highly skeptical of the practicality of humanoid robots. A non bipedal robot in most applications beats a humanoid robot. Look at the videos of the Optimus loading a battery cell carrier. A traditional robot in the background peels a few cells off the assembly line to feed to the Optimus so it can do the same but slower. That traditional robot is faster and cheaper than Optimus, though of course more ugly.

@@AudiTTQuattro2003 they stated very clearly that it wouldn’t be available on cybertruck at the start. Not sure why everyone’s so butt hurt about that. It’s not that they can’t, they just need the time and they have a priority list that they can’t just stop all other operations to make this one thing happen that a few KZbinrs are complaining about, even though they’ve stated several times that hardware 4 will lag hardware 3 training and that cybertruck won’t initially have FSD available

Manufacturing at scale is a big advantage. So is Tesla's elite engineering chops and Elon's willingness to tolerate - nay, encourage - risk-taking. But Tesla's unbeatable advantage is in end-to-end, real-world, vision-based AI and in inference computation. Lots of AI developers can point to massive training compute. Tesla can, too. But inference compute is another matter. Tesla's FSD inference chips feature massive on-board compute with exceptionally-efficient power draw, and they have a product roadmap to 10x compute cycles over their *next-gen* FSD chip, which itself is 4x the current chip (HW4), and HW4 is already far better than anything yet demonstrated by rivals. HW4 makes the inference compute going into Intel's or AMD's next-gen CPUs look weak. And Tesla, with its partners, can mass-produce HW4 and future chips, while rivals are struggling to ramp far less capable chips. Tesla has every base covered. I don't think anyone else does.

Tesla might not make Elon's guesstimates on when something will happen. However, compared to EVERY SINGLE PERSON THAT IS NEGATIVE about Elon Musk, they've LITERALLY accomplished NOTHING. So the next time someone is negative about Elon, look at how many fingers are pointing back at themselves and think about how those people haven't accomplished anything worth noting. Meanwhile Elon has close to a dozen companies doing REAL engineering work and accomplishing things that five or ten years ago these same people were saying were IMPOSSIBLE for Elon's companies to accomplish. Am I a total Elon fan? No! Because I'm not an idiot. But at the same time ... 1) What other person or company has gotten rockets to the International Space Station AND BACK. So far you have to go back to the the United States and the Space Shuttles, Russia and now Elon Musk and SpaceX. ULA FINALLY got a rocket up to the ISS but they haven't been able to get it or their astronauts back yet as of 6/27/2024. 2) What other person has taken a fledging car company and turned it into a very profitable car company which is selling the #1 car in the world. In the last 100 plus years only ONE car company has done that and that is Tesla with the Model Y. 3) What person has created a company that is the number 1 satellite company in the world? Well in the last 20 years that is SpaceX. 4) What person has created a tunneling company that has the fastest tunneling system in the world and is tunneling 10s of miles under a city. Right now there is only one which is Elon Musk and The Boring Company. 5) What person has a HUGELY successful energy business. Oh, that would be Elon Musk and Tesla. 6) What company has a great AI team? Well one of those is Tesla. 7) What company has an automotive self driving platform that they design the hardware and software that works (supervised but with you rarely having to take control of the wheel) in every city and town in the United States. There is only one that can claim that and that is Tesla. 8) What company went from nothing to a humanoid robot that can walk on its own around offices and do some simple chores in less than four years. Other companies took over a decade to do the same thing and Tesla is won't be selling just hundreds or thousands of robots but millions of robots before 2040 if not sooner. Next year they expect to have THOUSANDS of robots in Tesla factories. They might be doing simple things but you run before you walk. Tesla expects that their robots and energy systems are going to be the largest profit areas for Tesla in less than 10 years. And Tesla is already very profitable with their cars. There are many other examples. That's just some of them and none of the negative people have done 1% of what he has.

Building a neat robot and driving it's motion with a training neural net is very clever stuff, but it is far from a "useful assistant" that can handle new and varied tasks with real-time intelligence. Elon's oversell of Optimus is much like his oversell of going to Mars, but at least with the Mars mission the engineers managed to actually get it off the launch pad. With Optimus, we have not seen anything that suggests a level of AI that can be useful without massive NN learning regimes for every action. It likely took months and many staff hooked to replication systems to "train" the motions required to place a battery into the crate. This is not the AI required to meet the vision being sold as "just around the corner, next year working in factories". Yes one day robots will do everything being touted, but not Optimus, not even close. Hopefully the regulators will get onto it and stop this Theranos grade bullshit.

It doesn't need much intelligence to do useful repetitive work. Optimus can probably do most of the work in a GF. How easily it learns new tasks is yet unknown. It wouldn't surprise me if that's a tedious thing in the beginning. This AGI thing is unsolved yet, and might need a decade to become real, or close to real. The robot body is an easily solvable thing. We know that can be done. And that Tesla will be able to manufacture them at scale. The brain though, will need some evolving, and that's unchartered territory. It will be interesting to follow that revolution!

Tesla can't do it. Motors and gears are not the way forward. Elon should emulate the human body, use "unrolled" motors, every strand of a muscle is a motor, and then arrange skill acquisition as shared capacitance switching.
