Love it! I always thought like Sandy. Parts that are one piece or snap together, combining multiple parts functions into the single part design, use the right material for the part (molded plastic if possible), have multiple parts self-locate themselves precisely as they are assembled, and eliminate as many fasteners as possible. Good stuff.

I've said this before on other videos that I am not an engineer, but love to put things together and take them apart. This hits me on way more levels than just physical goods, it is a philosophy that can and for me should be applied to real life NO MATTER WHAT YOUR DOING. I've said both parts of this series to watch again because there are so many nuggets in here and if I am stuck on a problem, I think there is a process stated or shown here that can help me overcome it. That's what I think anyway. This is a gift to anyone who watches it.

The main problem with the consumer 3d printing scene is that all of the obvious advancements are under patent. So when you look at them and go "Wow I could make this so much better." You 100% could, but then you wouldn't be able to sell it. The tech is perpetually 15 years behind because the companies that first patented all those parts have almost no interest in selling to consumers. So here we are with 15 year old belt driven 3d printers.
@RojCowles

Great presentation! It's interesting how this also applies to software engineering. I very often see people over-engineering instead of simplifying code; adding code that should never exist; solving problems in isolation instead of thinking about bigger picture. I'm also learning on my mistakes which is frustrating - nobody taught my to think this way, neither at the university nor in the school. You just have to learn it the hard way. It's great if you learn from your mistakes, some people are too lazy or short-sighted to even learn.

In a different interview on the everyday astronauts youtube channel, Elon talks about how sometimes engineers end up over-engineering a solution that is unnecessary or sometimes not needed and that should be prevented. I think that applies even in software. I work with databases and reports, and I've found myself spending too much time on something that was ultimately not needed by the user

Hi Sandy, I have been telling and showing people things like this for years in the UK but because I left school at 14 nobody would listen, you made me cry.

Loved the lectures. I'm a chemist, not an engineer but I studied and worked with electronics and computing at university. At one point I worked for an analytical instrument manufacturer. I made a suggestion to one of the EEs. He immediately told me it couldn't be done. I asked two questions, wrote 8 lines on a piece of paper, handed to him and said this is how you do it. He insisted it couldn't be done but did show it to his boss, who fortunately did have an open mind. It was implemented in less than a day. Guess who got the credit - hint, it wasn't me.

Enjoyed this overview of success in engineering very much. Sandy speaks the truth in blunt and understandable terms!

Brings back memories of my time as an A&P mechanic in the 80’s working on Hawker 125 business jets. The phrase that comes to mind is “Why use one part when 10 will do the job nicely “. For instance the ailerons have a lead counter weight to balance them. It has 4 attach lugs that bolt into the aileron tip cap. Very reasonable. Had a cracked lug and ordered a new one from England. When I took it out of the box it was a raw lead casting with a vague shape that I needed. Took about 6 hours of hand filing, drilling, and then repainting to get it to fit properly.

Thanks, Sandy! A master class! The sacred cows that today lead the traditional automobile industries in the world and especially in the U.S., should be compelled to listen to this Master Class. The world is changing and it is necessary to innovate or disappear!

I work for a large e-comerce company. When I look at the enterprise, the core values, the mission, the trainings, I am super impressed. But when I visit sites and see the individual site, every time I am amazed at the short-sightedness, the false savings, the enabling of complacency, the lack of implementation of everything the corporation values. One of our biggest issues are 1 that supervisors look to short term goals and also are willing to lie to the next level of management to make themselves look good 2 Managers that rely on that fictional reporting without questioning. Proper decisions cannot be made without the correct data to base planning and decisions on 3 Complacency instead of kaizen America can learn a lot from this talk by Sandy THANKS Sandy!

The teacher learned with the student. Munro did what Elon does. A presentation showing how they do stuff with the goal of hiring people. Munro and Elon are a great partnership that always will move things forward. The guys at Arcimoto we're extremely smart to bring Munro to the team. Congratulations to you all.
