The main problem with the consumer 3d printing scene is that all of the obvious advancements are under patent. So when you look at them and go "Wow I could make this so much better." You 100% could, but then you wouldn't be able to sell it. The tech is perpetually 15 years behind because the companies that first patented all those parts have almost no interest in selling to consumers. So here we are with 15 year old belt driven 3d printers.

But when I visit sites and see the individual site, every time I am amazed at the short-sightedness, the false savings, the enabling of complacency, the lack of implementation of everything the corporation values. Great presentation! It's interesting how this also applies to software engineering. I very often see people over-engineering instead of simplifying code; adding code that should never exist; solving problems in isolation instead of thinking about bigger picture. I'm also learning on my mistakes which is frustrating - nobody taught my to think this way, neither at the university nor in the school. You just have to learn it the hard way. It's great if you learn from your mistakes, some people are too lazy or short-sighted to even learn.

In a different interview on the everyday astronauts youtube channel, Elon talks about how sometimes engineers end up over-engineering a solution that is unnecessary or sometimes not needed and that should be prevented.
