I have a 2024 Model 3 Performance. I’ve been a petrol head all my life and participate in club level Motorsport. After test driving the Tesla and getting back into my combustible vehicle, it was an instant realisation that all the complexity of engines, gearboxes was no longer necessary. Before my Tesla arrived I checked out all of the after market screens, buttons and switches, indicator stalks etc. I decided not to buy any until I’d had time to get used to the Tesla, and would get these things if I really needed them. To cut a long story short, I don’t need any of these things, I don’t miss anything. I love the simplicity, the quiet, the smoothness and the instant acceleration. It’s very capable on track too and does not disappoint. It’s amazing how quickly you adapt to something new. When I get into a car with stalks, I find myself trying to press the buttons on the wheel! I love Sandy and his team, no BS, just facts. I learn something from every episode. And if you think age has anything to do with embracing change and trying new technology, I’ve been here for 62 years.

I did the same thing when I bought my Model Y. I researched available gadgets that I could add to the car. I thought for sure that I would need an add-on cluster in front of the steering wheel, the add-on buttons for common functions, etc. In the end, the only things that I have added are a sun shade for the roof and all-weather floor mats. Nothing else was needed.

I am in my mid-70's. I love driving. But I'm gonna age out. I've never taken an Uber ride, and, if I thought about it, part of the reason is that the car and its driver are wild cards. If a cyber cab is statistically safer and subjectively less annoying, that will be a huge plus. The idea that I won't have to rely on myself in my 90's, but still have autonomy instead of being stuck inside, twiddling my thumbs, is a pretty attractive idea.

I would much rather control the vehicle not only for the fun of driving but none of the self driving systems are safe or reliable yet. You can also kiss your privacy good bye, and your car will snitch on you for any number of things and recording everything you do.. @@TheRightWay11 Part 1:The scanner used is Revopoint Miraco.. We built a rotating scanner mount using square steel tubing. This allowed us to mount the scanner and use a gearmotor, dc power supply and a cheap PWM module from Amazon. We were able to complete the scan in one rotation using "FAR" mode. (15.5 inches from center) The file was then downloaded to Revopoint "Revoscan" (free) software. The point cloud was processed from the selections located across the upper part of the PC screen. Going left to right with the options gave us a clean "mesh" model. The model was then exported as a ".STL" file to a folder. It's a mesh representation of the point cloud (which is what we called it) Part two: The mesh "cloud" was imported into the (free) MeshMixer software. Several "save as" functions created separate files for the a. point cloud b. the 1:1 model of the leg and c. the model for the socket. Having a copy of the point cloud allows for recovery from the inevitable mistakes. Like most CAD software, MeshMixer is very confusing to use...... until it's not. it turned out to be quite simple to create a 1:1 3D printable model of the leg; and also a Socket that could be used for carbon fiber layup. Part 3: A Bambu Labs X1 carbon was used to print both 1:1 leg and the socket. There is a new 3D print filament called "Tullemer" that is very strong. We have not used that yet, but we downloaded the 3D printer settings for it and used those settings to print in regular PLA. The socket we printed was not "final" in that we use it only to test for 'fitment' of the socket, to the leg. The 1:1 leg is being used for carbon fiber layup after confirmation of fitment. Once we have verified the process, we will make it open source to the public on my YT channel. Developing this process took us about 10 weeks.

The thought of another prosthetic, designed using conventional plaster of paris technology was severely depressing to him. The main reason: PofP tech created severely poor fitting sockets. Very painful, and caused edema and other health problems. We studied the current scanner technology and figured we could a least come up with a better fitting socket. Hope that was what you were asking.

I used to work in over the road trucking, and I did a lot of automotive parts, mostly for Stelantis, but a bit for Ford as well. The lac of innovation is starkly apparent in the way they ship stuff around. The best example is the time I picked up a trailer in Detroit to take to Dallas, and the weight of the stuff in the 53 foot semi trailer was 96 pounds. I don't know how much it cost them to ship that 96lb load a thousand miles, but it wasn't cheap.

They’re wonderful cars. I think the maintenance issue is a bit of a wash though. Instead of replacing timing belts or water pumps or PCV valves, you just wake up one day and need a $14k battery because a single cell went out. Over the life of the car, the maintenance costs are probably a wash. I love my Model 3. I just make sure I have enough in a high yield savings account for the eventual battery or motor replacement. Whether it’ll actually need it or not is a toss up. I see a lot of Model 3s with 250k+ miles that haven’t had any issues.
@rhinous1199
@rhinous1199 2 ай бұрын
The comparison isn’t even close on maintenance. No contest. New battery packs aren’t 14k. They are currently about 8k for your car. And they are on track to be under 4k in two more years. Recurrent just did a huge breakdown on all of this. That’s taking into account that you will have to drive your Tesla about 500k miles before you even hit 70% max battery capacity. Will you still have the same car by then? Unlikely. If so, a new battery pack will be cheaper than a new engine and 10 years of maintenance on an equivalent ICE vehicle. The costs aren’t even close to a “wash”. It’s a landslide. Sorry. Just tired of this myth being perpetuated. Brake replacements, oil changes, fluid flushes will put you in the 8-12k price range at 500k miles. Thats just maintenance. Now add any major drivetrain repairs that will likely occur with that mileage. Checkout the article on Recurrents research on battery packs.

@ I have a 55kWh pack in my SR+. I’ve only ever seen quotes for 14k to have it replaced by Tesla. It’s usually just a single cell or two that goes bad and causes the BMS to nuke the pack. Where can I get it replaced for 8k? I’m not being a smart ass or anything. I’m actually happy to hear they’re cheaper than I anticipated.

@@kungfoochicken08 Consumer Reports have the numbers. Tesla is the cheapest at ~$4000 over 10 years. Motor and invertor and gearing for the CyberCab and Q is $1000.

@@kungfoochicken08 people are still talking about replacing batteries? tesla released their battery data on the model 3 and y after 200k miles the average battery was at 85% capacity. there is basically no problem until the capacity is at 70%. it seem kinda weird to complain about a possible battery change at 400-500k miles. and the motors are rated for 1 million miles. the only reason early tesla motors failed is because of a design flaw (which was only on the model s for like 2 years). overall as you put more mileage teslas become increasingly cheaper to maintain until about 500k miles (this is just an estimate because ive seen plenty of model3/y taxis with 400k miles that supercharge all day long and charge near 100% everyday and their battery seemed fined but near that 70% barrier where risk of failure increase a lot)

It reminds me a bit of the 1960 VW Beetle. That car had no gas gauge, just a "reserve tank" lever. It also had a key locking mechanism for only the driver's door, the passenger door had to be unlocked from inside the car -- I guess Germans didn't open car doors for their wives back then! Parts that aren't there cannot break. Now that's a first principle!

A note to the camera person - there is a thing they call "the golden ratio." It is around 1.6 to 1 or approximately 62% to 38%. It is not 50/50. They say the golden ratio is pleasing to look at. This means do not locate the person talking directly in the middle of the frame. Place the person off-center to around 38% on one side. If the person is talking or gesturing in a direction such as Munro talking to the right, place Sandy 38% to the left and leave 62% space on the right. When you do this, you are using your artistic sense and you are "using intent" to make the composition of the frame more pleasing to the viewer. Also for practical reasons we can better see when Sandy is gesturing. Also when shooting Carl, go ahead and include the cybercab on the left so the audience can look at it. Thank you. Best of luck in your artistic journey.

From 1973 I as employed as a work study engineer. Recording how things were done, questioning every element of every process, producing standard times for processes - sometimes at a high level, other times n extreme detail (micromotion), maybe filing the process and analysing it frame by frame. As Sandy says, if you’re in volume production, you need to minimise the time - and therefore cost - required to produce each element. The first question, of course, is "why is this task done at all"? A regular answer would be "because we've always done it that way". If it doesn't contribute , delete it. By the late 1980s, companies were continually 'restructuring' with cost-cutting across the board. No consideration of cost v benefit. Work Study was considered dispensable. They just didn't understand what they had. Gradually the west suffered from falling productivity, poor quality, reduced motivation and worsening labour relations. Industries became uncompetitive and, as we all know, were closed with the work being offshored. It's a sad story!

Well for efficiency they'd need several compartments to be able to do a delivery trip to more than one customer. Otherwise they'd have to return to base for each delivery, limiting the delivery throughput (how may deliveries per hour the place can make). But such a compartmentalized box could be an add-on to go into the quite spacious trunk.

(2) if and when it hits the road, it's not going to be like that, eg will have normal doors plus emergency controls inside - brakes and perhaps steering. (3) 2 seat, 2 door - not great for a taxi - real one will be more traditional. (4) FSD, even the latest version, not upto regulatory approval. (5) released vehicle will likely come in at ~10-15% parts reductions. Accepted, I'm not a fan, but enough of an automotive engineer to recognise puff from reality.

Sandy is 1000% correct on pricing steps. We dealt with this often, different industry, same problem. Sales would ask, "How much does this cost." And we could say, "$xxxx" because we were using detailed deployment plans, that quite frankly were nowhere near as detailed as what was laid out here, but absolutely necessary to understand actual costs. The response we ALWAY got back was "Oh that's way too expensive, we can't sell that, can you do better." My answer was "No, but feel free to quote what you like to the customer, this is what it costs." When companies are finding it hard to stay in the black on a project this is why.

COGS? Tesla is selling the Cybercab instead of running it themselves? Isn't there the rather minor problem of getting approval for it first? And not to forget that Tesla's (except first roadster) have the battery pack under the floor so even if it looks very low they don't get around that the battery needs the live beneath it. And I believe it can be the thing that works for the majority. Model 3 and Y will also be in robotaxi fleet.

That shape is strong and uses less material than something bigger and boxier. It costs less to manufacture and operate. It will suffice for most solo and two-person trips while maximizing profit. In time Tesla will provide other vehicles for other trip categories. Keep in mind rental car agencies have everything from compact cars to SUVs to trucks for rent for different needs at different prices. I doubt Tesla will have as much variety, but likely a 2-seat, a easy-entry 6 seat, the robovan, and robotruck for deliveries.

Nor lift there shopping trolley in and out of the back. Even one person who's just bought a chair at Ikea can't get it home in this. You need to be able to walk into a taxi like you do a train or a bus. And doesn't a taxi need to be rugged rather than cheap? If it lasts 20 years and makes $50K a year what does it matter if it costs $30 or $60K? I think Tesla has lost its way on this thing.

A simple example that sets Tesla apart from other car manufacturers is that when ordering a new car, it takes a minute to order it because you are essentially just choosing the color of the car and the seats, whereas for other manufacturers, like Porsche, there are so many options to choose from, that you can spend anywhere from an hour to a day just to order a new vehicle.

That will be toning the acceleration down then to solve that. But the robotaxi will get rid of that problem also.

This Tesla design goes against everything that users want. It is a disposable crappy gadget that cannot be repaired. It should never be allowed on the road as it is a heap of single use electric waste. Any modern car should be easy to disassemble and repair.

Sandy I want the Robotaxi to have a OEM fly by wire Steering wheel and pedal add on kit, tell Elon, it would be Easy $3k fly by wire steering wheel and bolt on pedal option, you know how easy this would be, I like driving too much to always have my car doing the driving. Yes I use FSD 12.2 love it but love the steering wheel more and im not the only one.
