The Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life offers a series of short classes this spring designed to teach participants about the origins, beliefs and practices of various faith traditions.
LD Russell, in the Department of Religious Studies, leads this weekly Monday program to teach the concepts, ideas and practices of several of the world's biggest religions.
In this fourth session, Russell gives an overview of Buddhism.

Hi, I'm from North-eastern part of India and I'm a Hindu. Since comment is disabled on Hinduism I'm leaving a comment here. I'd like to thank Sir Russell for his lecture, and would love to listen further on Hinduism which he could not finish on the video and about Hanuman. He has tried his best to give an overall idea about Hinduism. And I think he has given it in the most accurate way compared to other western scholars. Hinduism is very complex, and anybody can not grasp it just by reading the books. It needs experts (gurus) to conceive the real meaning. And that is why it is said it is not a religion, but Hindu is a way of life. What's beautifull about Hinduism is that it is open to everyone and give the room to followers to question about it, to not just accept what is being told to do and not to do. And correction : Hindu has multiple Gods, but they are demigods and Goddesses. We don't worship every demi Gods, although we offer Pujas on anniversaries, but it's not a compulsion. Gods mainly worshipped are : Vishnu, Radha Krishna, Shiva, Durga, Ganesh and some others. It's their choice. Vaihnavites consider Krishna as the Supreme God. Shivaites consider Shiva as the Supreme. FYI, Everyday is not a festival in India.

The big difference between the Indic Dharmasena and Abrahamic religions is summarised in the end - Buddha is not going to carry anyone along the path. He shows the path he walked. It is available to everyone. An Abrahamic prophet has to carry the burden of whosoever believes in him. Others go to Hell. He is an exceptionally good teacher 👌🙏

How much insecure do you have to be to instantly compare, in such vast generalizations, all of the world's major religion in a sentence? Very, I suppose. Another difference you can come up with is: there's caste system in Hinduism, still living today and well striving with no signs of abating, not in other belief system. In case you need to be validated that Indian religions(debatable phrase) are , literally the best in the world, a tolerant, loving, caring, advanced, progressive, egalitarian belief system, which it isn't, where caste system is just an addition by few zealots.....I'll give it to you-hinduism is literally the best religion in the world. Happy? You're welcome

beautiful and well interpreted story of the life of the buddha. Just missed one part. In which when the lady feeds rice and milk to siddhartha he realizes that going extreme is not the key to the answer. In which he gives an example of the guitar string, if too tight then it might snap and if too loose then it will not produce a good sound. So he comes to a conclusion that taking the middle path is the best solution and then he proceeds to his meditation under the bhodi tree...

@norsang lama The word Hindu is a name assigned by ancient Persians for people living west of the river Sindhu. Since they couldn't pronounce Sindhu, they called those people Hindu. Note that "Hindus" never called themselves Hindu until the modern age, it's a label we've adopted since India's colonial subjugation. In our "religion" , there is no concept of religion being an identity. In fact our "religion" is called "Sanatana Dharma", meaning "eternal dharma". And there's no english word for dharma but it can be roughly translated to "actions / things that facilitate the order of the universe, righteousness, duty, good etc." Also remarkable is that Hindus don't have a central organisation, or one holy book that governs and validates a person's entry to the "Hindu religion". Infact we've got multiple books, philosophies and paths, that seek to know God or the ultimate reality. So yea, it wouldn't make sense to you since you don't want to understand but want to argue. Also, just google, you'll easily find english translations of Vedas and Upanishads, although most of the meaning is lost in translation.

Dear Prof Russell: This is a truly amazing lecture, not so much because it presents the topic in detail, nor even because it reveals any remarkable new insights but because you were able to relate the life story of the Buddha in very intimate personal terms both in regard to your own life and also in terms of the lives of your decidedly Christian audience of the Bible Belt variety. I have a BA/MA, and I've taken even more college courses than that. As such, I would say that you are quite different from 99% of all the college professors that I've ever encountered because you are such a sincere and humble person. Almost all college professors have a "superiority complex" to some degree which seemingly entitles them to treat their students as inferior beings of some type. This lecture clearly shows me that you "don't play that game". You truly don't see yourself as being "superior" in any way. In fact, your poignant details about the death of your loved ones and the effect that it had on you is something that NO college professor Would EVER Do because it would expose his emotional vulnerabilities to his students thus making him "easy prey" for them. In contrast, you seem to find your "moral authority" as a teacher by revealing yourself to be as much of a weak and vulnerable a creature as are those in your audience. Your academic life seems to truly embody the Socratic ideal that the wisest man is the one who realizes how truly ignorant he is and is not at all afraid or ashamed to admit his ignorance to others. That is a valuable life lesson that the no college curriculum can possibly encompass. It can ONLY come from the mind, heart, and spirit of a truly good man. ... So.Experienced@gmail.com

Buddhism is a path of practice and spiritual development leading to Insight into the true nature of reality. Buddhist practices like meditation are means of changing yourself in order to develop the qualities of awareness, kindness, and wisdom. The experience developed within the Buddhist tradition over thousands of years has created an incomparable resource for all those who wish to follow a path - a path which ultimately culminates in Enlightenment or Buddhahood. An enlightened being sees the nature of reality absolutely clearly, just as it is, and lives fully and naturally in accordance with that vision. This is the goal of the Buddhist spiritual life, representing the end of suffering for anyone who attains it. Because Buddhism does not include the idea of worshipping a creator god, some people do not see it as a religion in the normal, Western sense. The basic tenets of Buddhist teaching are straightforward and practical: nothing is fixed or permanent; actions have consequences; change is possible. So Buddhism addresses itself to all people irrespective of race, nationality, caste, sexuality, or gender. It teaches practical methods which enable people to realise and use its teachings in order to transform their experience, to be fully responsible for their lives...........WORLD TRUE RELIGION IS BUDDHISM

I feel like people understand these simple linear stories about a certain religion and they feel connected with it and feel hinduism is too much, but what they fail to understand is that hinduism talks about higher levels, spiritualism, cosmos, amd not just about us in earth but beings in different world parallel universe and that is so beautiful, why should you learn about this only from your science class and not through your religion… that is why the gurus the sages in Hinduism were not only people with knowledge of religion and earth but way way knowledgeable like scientists astronomers historians researchers and yet spiritual and took gods name

What I conclude is that where most religions came into existence as a will to have authority over people and to some extent over their actions, Buddhism came to existence by renouncing that authority which the prince Gautam already had. This fact of Buddhism appeals to me over any other religion such as Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism etc.

Correct.... But in Hinduism, Lord Ram was living in Exile for 14 year in a dense forest from where he got his chance to prove himself.... sir since u disabled comments for hindusim i want to leave comment over here 1) I respect your knowledge and hard work, i know how hard it is to understand the relgions of east because they are actually very complex but also more relavent, u ll see another dimension of world if u research more on mytholgy of east mainly hindusim 2) in india buddha is considered as 9th incarnation of lord vishnu(rama, krishna are same incarnation of lord vishunu, Buddha is latest ones haha) 3) hindusim isnt a relgion but we call " way of life" (sanatana dhrama = eternal duty) 4) jainism, buddism.shkisims are sub set of hindusim and we all workship each others gods 5) hindusim is science , its like encylopedia of knowledge. Albert Einstein also said relativity, cosmos, parallel unvisere is all mentioned in vedic texts and its lot more, a new dimension of histroy and human race 6). interesting fact to notice is in hindusim from matshya avtar(fish) to buddha and all other avatars in between co relates with darwins theroy of evolution from fish-amphibian-human (( there are 10 avatars u might easily find on net)) 7) it has never been indian and chinse philosophy that "we are most advanced civilisation and our past generation were cavemen" - its completely opposite to it, we think we were great civilisation in science, medicine, technology back in past but now we have lost the knowledge due to invaders and time. - if u ever get time i suggest u to watch PRAVEEN MOHAN' vedio about acient indian temples and decoding the lost science, technology it will also help you in your research because he is indian and he is already aware of lot of gods and the stories. - to know more about indian histroy one should know indian mythology(which we call our histroy, stories), science , cosmos and have good imagination skills and praveen's youtube channel will help you out

The Law myoho-renge-kyo represents the identity of what some scientists refer to as the ‘unified field of all consciousnesses’. In other words, it’s a sound vibration that is the essence of all of existence and non-existence, the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the true creator of everything that is, ever was and ever will be, right down to the minutest particles of dust, each being an individual ripple or wave. The big difference between chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middle man’ to connect us to our state of enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves by tapping directly into it by way of self-produced sound vibration. On the subject of ‘Who or What Is God?’, when we compare the concept of ‘God’, as a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to Nichiren’s teachings, the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people call ‘God’ is our enlightenment, which exists nowhere else but within us. When the disciples asked Jesus where the Kingdom of God is, didn’t he tell them that it was within them? Some say that ‘God’ is an entity that can never be seen. I think that the vast amount of information that is constantly being conveyed via electromagnetic waves gives us proof of how an invisible state of ‘God’ could actually exist. It’s widely known that certain data being relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects, including instant global awareness of something or mass emotional reaction. As well as many other things, it’s also common knowledge that these waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to even enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars. However, none of this is possible without a receiver to decode the information that is being transmitted. Without the receiver, the information would remain impotent. In a very similar way, it’s important for us to have our ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our life, all other life and what we and all else that exists truly is. Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach into the core of our enlightenment and switch it on. That’s because the sound vibration of ‘myoho-renge-kyo’ represents the combination of the three major laws that underlie all existence. ‘Myoho’ represents the Law of latency and manifestation (Nature), and consists of two alternating states. One state of ‘myo’ is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists. This includes our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them, our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re not being expressed, our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma, and more importantly, our enlightenment. The other state, ‘ho’, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes obvious to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory, whenever we experience or express our emotions, or whenever a good or bad effect manifests from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it simply means that it has come out of the state of ‘myo’ (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ‘ho’ (manifestation). It’s simply the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing something. The second law, ‘renge’, governs and controls the functions of ‘myoho’, ‘ren’ meaning cause and ‘ge’ meaning effect. The two laws of ‘myoho’ and ‘renge’, both functions together simultaneously, as well as underlies all spiritual and physical existence. The final and third part of the tri-combination, ‘kyo’, is what allows the law ‘myoho’ to be able to integrate with the law ‘renge’. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects together all Life and matter, as well as the past, present and future. It is often termed the Universal Law of Communication. Perhaps it could even be compared to the ‘string theory’ that some scientists now suspect exists. Just as our body cells, thoughts, feelings and all else are constantly fluctuating within us, everything in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux, in accordance with these three laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of ‘myo’ and ‘ho’ in a single moment than it would ever be possible for us to calculate or describe. And it doesn't matter how big or small, important or trivial that anything may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now, or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of 'myoho-renge-kyo'. These three laws are also the basis of the four fundamental forces and if they didn't function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. Simply put, all forms of existence, including the seasons, day and night, birth, death and so on, are all moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation, rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two universal states of ‘myo’ and ‘ho’ in absolute accordance with ‘renge’ and by way of ‘kyo’. Even stars are dying and being reborn in accordance with the workings of what the combination ‘myoho-renge-kyo’ represents. ‘Nam’, or 'Namu', on the other hand, is a password or a key; it allows us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘myoho-renge-kyo’. On a more personal basis, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives from moment to moment, as well in our environment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is turning, and rhythmically chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for a minimum of ten minutes daily, anyone can experience actual proof of its positive effects in their life. In so doing, we can pierce through even the thickest layers of our karma and activate our Buddha Nature (enlightened state). We’re then able to bring forth the wisdom needed to challenge, overcome and change our negative circumstances into positive ones. It brings forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that is preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we truly are, regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexual preference. We are also able to see and understand our circumstances and environment more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations. Actual proof soon becomes apparent to anyone who chants the words Nam-myoho-renge-kyo on a regular daily basis. Everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect, so the strength of the result from chanting depends on dedication, sincerity and determination. To explain it more simply, the difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, or producing a song and so on. PS: There are scary, hair-raising sounds and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It's the emotional result from any sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo each day you are producing a sound vibration that is the password to your true inner-self - this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on different things, such as your fears and desires etc. The important way to get the best result when chanting is not the see things in a conventional way (it's not easy to achieve this), rather than reaching out to an external source, you need to reach into your own life and bring your needs and desires to fruition from within, including any help that you may need. Think of it like a seed within you that you are bringing sunshine water to in order for it to grow and blossom. Everything we need in life, all the answers and potential to achieve our dreams, already exist within us. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZe1lIimpLWfbdk

Then you don't know much about Hinduism, what I hate about westerners tryna explain brahmic religions is that they try to relate it to abrahamic religions which have nothing in common and they try to stretch similarities which just pisses me off. They know that how logical and well developed the dharmic religions are so they feel inferior and are scared to share the 'true' knowledge of brahmic religions openly to the Western people (mostly Christian) that they will be very curious about it and many may leave Christianity.

I saw the professor's speech on Hinduism and being a Hindu myself I can understand why people were offended. He has a significant amount of arrogance and subtle contempt of the subject. If Hinduism has to be taught then it must be taught with a certain amount of grace and humbleness. His entire demeanor throughout the lecture disgusted me. Also his poor pronunciation of many Hindu words/terms alone shows his lack of respect for the subject. Santana?! are you joking?! It is pronounced SA-NA-TA-NA DHARMA. The sad part is that hardly any western teachers understand Hinduism and yet they want to be known as experts of it. I say if you want to learn about this religion then do so from the plethora of interviews given and documents written by Hindus. It is a faith that has as much depth as breadth in its teachings and this is something that many westerners teaching Hinduism do not grasp. In short go to the source if you want to know the truth and reality about something. That said I don't condone the "insults, vulgarity, and name calling" that my people threw on the message boards due to which the comments had to be turned off. We Hindus are better than that, but it's unfortunate that we're continuously put in a position where we have to defend ourselves and our faith against outside forces. See India's real history and you'll know what I mean. Start by reading "Breaking India" by Rajiv Malhotra to see how Hinduism has been doctored by colonial faiths. That said, I think it quite hypocritical that you have the audacity to post this "lecture" on youtube and then show such cowardice when you get immensely negative feedback. In short the takeaway for you is this: If you want to bring awareness about other religions - specifically eastern - then invite experts of those religions to your events. DO NOT take on the "burden" of teaching them yourself because as history has shown we Hindus and Buddhists pay a very hefty price when you do.

I dunno if you're trolling or are serious but you come off extremely arrogant to think that you or other "experts" could do the subject justice within a 1 hour lecture. Why not just bring them more clothes then if really concerned? A 10 year old trying to teach a lesson seems childish to me let alone understand what being naked or unnaked is.

I came from another video about Hinduism where comments were not allowed and the reason stated was abuse and insults thrown in the comments section. I mean you have an academician trying his best to have an academic discourse on a difficult subject matter here and the people abuse him so much that the channel was forced to disable the comments. A purely academic study is supposed to make people discuss the subject matter with greater depth instead they indulge in trash talk. What a depressing state of affairs.

He had done a very beautiful job, it seems that people themselves are not aware of their own tradition, or they know just facts, or somehow they are insecure about their own tradition, but if they try to know it, then I am sure, they will understand that there was nothing offensive.
