I refuse to be sad, instead I will be elated you got to experience true love, I will be lifted up because you got to make new life and raise it (from the sounds of it you are a loving dad and Husband) and because you got to experience true happiness with what I can only imagine was wild ride of energetic nights both loving and fighting. Good on you, you got to do the most amazing thing in life and bring a life joy, peace and bring it to a long journy to finally be at rest with a wonderful life. I do not cry for your because I am sad for you, I cry because you brought me a wave of emotion with a simple sentance. Live well, you loved well and they ARE waiting for you with great excitment. Keep living for those that need you still. See you on the other side.

I hadn't seen him in years but we connected for the last couple years via telephone. Can't really be "game-changers" when your entire sound is based on The Beatles' late '60s period. Jeff Lynne literally said that ELO's objective was to pick up where The Beatles left off. Plenty of music journalists have written about the homage they pay to the Fab Four. Hell, Wikipedia even has an entire page dedicated to how much ELO was influenced by them ("Jeff Lynne and The Beatles"). But yeah, ELO was great.

I love how he added in the line ringing at the beginning; it really adds to the song, for those of us old enough that we lived through a time where there were phones that didn't have an answering machine or voicemail, and the phone just rang and rang sometimes when there was someone we REALLY wanted to talk to.

My dog who I've had since I was 5 years old just passed away today. She'll never be able to see my graduation or anything that comes after, but in life she was suffering from a terminal illness which rendered her unable to do pretty much anything. I have no idea how long my grief is going to last, and how much longer I'll be bawling my eyes out because of her, but this song has helped me out a lot. Seeing her pass onto the other side has left me lonely, and I wish I had a telephone line to communicate to her with. There's clearly been a lot of heart and emotion poured into this song's lyrics and composition, and it's really nice to have something to resonate with.

Doo da wop, doo bee doo da wop, do wah doo lang. Blue days, black nights, doo wah doo lang. I look into the sky, The love you need ain't gonna see you through, And I wonder why the little things you planned ain't comin' true. Oh, oh, telephone line, Give me some time, I'm living in twilight. Oh, oh, telephone line, Give me some time, I'm living in twilight. O. K. so no one's answering, Well, can't you just let it ring a little longer, longer, longer oh, I'll just sit tight, Through shadows of the night let it ring forever more, oh, hoh hoh hoh. Listen to this all these years on takes me back to my mad mental days in me motor with the sound of twin 48 dellortos chattering away in the background😳thanks Jeff
Lol I get the reference with O.K. instead of okay. For those who don’t know: the higher educated folk of the 1800s (colleges and such), around the time of the invention of the telegram, used purposeful misspellings of words when they communicated. One of them was Olls Korrect (All’s Correct), which they short handed with OK. When the telegram came around, people would respond with the letters OK to show that they got the message that the other was sending. It’s fitting for a song about a crumbling of communication to use it. It’s like he’s trying to hold onto the connection for longer by responding with “all is good”. It’s especially supported when he says, “Can you let it ring a little longer?” Honestly though, I don’t think he meant it to be like that. If he did, props to you Jeff Lynne!
