I refuse to be sad, instead I will be elated you got to experience true love, I will be lifted up because you got to make new life and raise it (from the sounds of it you are a loving dad and Husband) and because you got to experience true happiness with what I can only imagine was wild ride of energetic nights both loving and fighting. Good on you, you got to do the most amazing thing in life and bring a life joy, peace and bring it to a long journy to finally be at rest with a wonderful life. I do not cry for your because I am sad for you, I cry because you brought me a wave of emotion with a simple sentance. Live well, you loved well and they ARE waiting for you with great excitment. Keep living for those that need you still. See you on the other side.

I unexpectedly lost my father less than a week ago. This was one of his favorite bands, and one of his favorite songs. I hadn't seen him in years but we connected for the last couple years via telephone. My phone was disconnected for lack of paying my bill, and that happened to be the last day of his life, where he sent me some text messages that I didn't receive until the next day, when he had already passed. I could never reply. Love you dad.

Can't really be "game-changers" when your entire sound is based on The Beatles' late '60s period. Jeff Lynne literally said that ELO's objective was to pick up where The Beatles left off. Plenty of music journalists have written about the homage they pay to the Fab Four. Hell, Wikipedia even has an entire page dedicated to how much ELO was influenced by them ("Jeff Lynne and The Beatles"). But yeah, ELO was great.

A few years ago Maroon 5 did song where the phone, a pay phone was central to the lyric. But where can you find a pay phone any more? But this song does take you back to when the phone was the primary means of communication (we also wrote letters, they just took a while, unlike the instant transmission of email). Remember only making long distance phone calls on the weekends because the rates were lower?

This song made me cry when I was in high school hoping for a girlfriend. It now makes me cry, 46 years later, when I reminisce about my 29-year marriage that ended in an unwanted divorce. If I live to be 92, there will probably be a new reason to cry when I hear this. And I'm okay with that.

I’m so sorry to hear that. I’m still searching for a girlfriend and I’ve got my heart set on a girl I’ve known for four years since we started freshman year, and then there was COVID, and I also had to go to a college prep school. I still try to connect with her, but we’re just so busy. I repeat, I’ve known her for 4 years, but it’s difficult for me to move on.

My dog who I've had since I was 5 years old just passed away today. She'll never be able to see my graduation or anything that comes after, but in life she was suffering from a terminal illness which rendered her unable to do pretty much anything. I have no idea how long my grief is going to last, and how much longer I'll be bawling my eyes out because of her, but this song has helped me out a lot. Seeing her pass onto the other side has left me lonely, and I wish I had a telephone line to communicate to her with. There's clearly been a lot of heart and emotion poured into this song's lyrics and composition, and it's really nice to have something to resonate with.

Are you still the same, don't you realize the things we did, we did were all for real, not a dream. I just can't believe they've all faded out of view, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, oo. Doo da wop, doo bee doo da wop, do wah doo lang. Blue days, black nights, doo wah doo lang. I look into the sky, The love you need ain't gonna see you through, And I wonder why the little things you planned ain't comin' true. Oh, oh, telephone line, Give me some time, I'm living in twilight. Oh, oh, telephone line, Give me some time, I'm living in twilight. O. K. so no one's answering, Well, can't you just let it ring a little longer, longer, longer oh, I'll just sit tight, Through shadows of the night let it ring forever more, oh, hoh hoh hoh. This song reminds me of my oldest son who is an addict. I never know where he is and i worry for him. I love him with my entire heart and soul. I pray he can over come this...

"Hello, how are you? Have you been alright through all those lonely, Lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely nights?" That's what I'd say, I'd tell you everything If you pick up that telephone, yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, How you feelin'? Are you still the same, don't you realise the things we did, We did were all for real, not a dream. I just can't believe they've all faded out of view, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, oo. Doo da wop, doo bee doo da wop, do wah doo lang. Blue days, black nights, doo wah doo lang. I look into the sky, the love you need ain't gonna see you through, And I wonder why, the little things you planned ain't comin' true. Doo da wop, doo bee doo da wop, do wah doo lang. Blue days, black nights, doo wah doo lang. I look into the sky, the love you need ain't gonna see you through, And I wonder why, the little things you planned ain't comin' true. Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time, I'm living in twilight. Oh, oh, telephone line, give me some time, I'm living in twilight. Lol I get the reference with O.K. instead of okay. For those who don’t know: the higher educated folk of the 1800s (colleges and such), around the time of the invention of the telegram, used purposeful misspellings of words when they communicated. One of them was Olls Korrect (All’s Correct), which they short handed with OK. When the telegram came around, people would respond with the letters OK to show that they got the message that the other was sending. It’s fitting for a song about a crumbling of communication to use it. It’s like he’s trying to hold onto the connection for longer by responding with “all is good”. It’s especially supported when he says, “Can you let it ring a little longer?” Honestly though, I don’t think he meant it to be like that. If he did, props to you Jeff Lynne!

One of the greatest songs ever made in my opinion. Even a young guy like me gets a burst of wistful nostalgia every time I hear it.

It’s funny how well this song has aged. Even if we’re past the landline and onto cellphones, the emotional tones and touches still ring true more than 40 years later. Amazing.

How well it's aged? Because newer somehow means better? You must be pretty depressed by Bach and Louis Armstrong then, because that music is really old.
