I have listened to many unreleased outtakes of Bob Dylan thanks to KZbin. They have varying degrees of rarity and quality. This one song to me ranks as his best when it comes to both of those metrics. This was Dylan just before the Traveling Wilburys and around the Grateful Dead collaboration period. It seems as though he threw this cover version together with the Dead during a one-off recording session and produced magic that cannot be manufactured. The whole thing came together here. Dylan post Knocked Out Loaded but pre Traveling Wilburys, and this music helped him bridge a failing career into the Never Ending Tour. And what evidence do we have in the background as fans? A very obscure Solomon Burke cover. It makes for a perfect storm and this outtake to me is my most highly regarded in his entire canon.

This is great that he sang this because this isn't a well known song. It's actually pretty obscure. It's awesome whenever Bob sings a song by someone else. To me that's the ultimate compliment that Bob Dylan thinks enough of someone else's song to actually sing it. I discovered this song from Bob Dylan's song Jakob who was once talking about some of his favorite songs and he mentioned Solomon Burke's version of this song. This was a couple years before Bob's version was released. I wonder if him and his dad ever talked about this song?
