The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), currently under construction in Chile, will be the world's biggest eye on the sky when it sees first light, planned for 2025. This revolutionary ground-based ESO telescope is set to be the largest of its kind in the world. 798 individual hexagonal segments will make up the telescope's main mirror, which spans 39 metres in diameter. The unique 5-mirror design of this telescope and advanced imaging technology will allow the ELT to produce images 15 times sharper than the Hubble Space Telescope. The ELT’s light-gathering power will allow astronomers worldwide to delve deeper and more clearly into our Universe, addressing the most prominent astrophysics questions of our time.
The design for the ELT shown here is preliminary.

The best thing about this project is that we don't have to fear a rapid unplanned disassembly.

Imagine a beast like this built on the Moon. Or would dust ruin the mirrors?
@glutinousmaximus
@glutinousmaximus 4 жыл бұрын
We could build or navigate such a telescope there. Dust would not really be a problem, I don't think, since there is no air there to scatter dust about. But space would be a great location - except we are already working on the James Webb telescope!

tl;dr: adaptive optics. Those yellow lasers light sodium atoms very high up and create an artificial "guide stars". Such "stars" have known characteristics and by comparing what you can see via the telescope with what it should look like, you can calculate the "distortion" and apply measures to negate it, effectively removing the atmospheric effects.
