Thank you for posting this. It's really encouraging as I have been contemplating on doing CELTA for a while now but was put off by stories of non-native speakers and POCs experiencing discrimination in this industry. In my case, I don't fully consider myself a non-native speaker since English is my first language and was the only one I was exposed to since birth. I didn't even learn other languages like Malay and Chinese until I started school. Yet because I was born and raised in a country where English isn't an official language (though it is widely spoken as a second language), I am classified by the rest of the world as a non-native speaker. I can't help but find it amusing yet frustrating at the same time, since I don't really fall into both categories but am more of stuck in the middle.

Great video! Thanks Marek for sharing your experience. Unfortunately, there are many more non-native super qualified English teachers who don't have an EU passport and who struggle to find any job in this field also because of the paper work. The fact that a particular person was born within EU already opens a lot of doors and you don't need to be scared that sooner or later they'll kick you out from the country you are staying at. Anyway, that's the world we are living in and those non-native non-EU teachers should be aware of all the difficulties they'll encounter on their way and really think twice before they decide to deal with all of that. One more piece of advice - if teaching isn't your vocation or your passion, don't even try. You'll burn out.

Thank you so much for this video. It's really frustrating that with all ones qualification and experience in teaching English- for example, I have a B.A and M. A in English and after 15 years of teaching English, I get rejected just because I'm not a native speaker. I mean the discrimination is so real. And the most annoying thing is that, no one tells you in most cases that, you won't be allowed to teach. As a Masters holder, TEFL is so basic. There is nothing challenging in there at all if you consider what one went through in studying syntax, phonology and many other challenging aspects of the language. So, I'm so happy with you and this video. I will definitely subscribe. Thank you loads

Thank you for posting this video - as a non native English teacher, I could really relate to it. What was said about the discrimination was so true and I agree, it is much harder for us to prove ourselves, both to our students and "employers".

Thanks Martin and Marek. You had inspired me to take the CELTA. I'm an Indian and honestly I'd say I'm far more proficient in English than in Hindi as English has been the language of instruction throughout my academic life. Any suggestions for discovering own strengths or finding one's 'niche' until one lands that first job? I'm looking at private tutoring and find the market saturated with teachers offering 'personalised lessons for all levels and all skills'.

Very interesting video, thanks for posting it! Will definitely take into consideration the suggestions about the CV...my personal experience as a non native teacher has been good so far, usually here in Italy having the Celta and the C2 certificate is enough to be hired...it was more difficult to get jobs without the Celta though...

Hi Thanks 😊for your video From my part, I don't think it is a matter of discrimination, those schools who require native speakers are fulfilling the need of the market. Students prefer to be taught by natives, therefore, you cannot force them. In addition to what I have already mentioned, you cannot deny the fact that there is a massive difference between a native and a non native speaker, Having said that, it doesn't mean I am trying to demotivate those want to teach English in the UK or in English speaking country, but you can be a better option to the people of your own. English is not my first language. When I first came to the UK I refused to be taught by non native speakers. So they were obliged to put me with a native, otherwise I would have left. So we need to be comprehensive... Thanks

Don't mean to be rude to any native English in particular, this is just an anecdote, once when discriminated for not being a native speaker by some prick colleague I told him "Well, it's true, you are the natives, but we, non-natives, happen to be the ambassadors of English to the rest of the nations. Some prefer to learn with the Ambassadors rather than just some chick slang of peasants". And I have just obtained my CPE C2 and am going after my CELTA, I can imagine what the future brings...
@AdamLeite

The root of this discrimination is the fact that students believe that if they have a native speaker, they will have better pronunciation Or that they will have the teacher's accent. I have to constantly reminded the students that you don't catch the teachers' accent. I always remind them that whatever their languages are, that's what their accents are going to be forever.
