Hi, in the first place let me thank you so much for sharing this pretty informative video with us. Actually I'm preparing for CELTA and I'm not a native speaker as well. However from my perspective , non native speakers are so powerful when it comes to grammar and language awareness in general and this is their point of strength they should focus on with many other important things of course during the CELTA course notably 06 hours of teaching practice which require a strong combination of teaching strategies, approaches, classroom management, written assignments, self evaluation and my ability to speak and interact ,motivate the students and build a good rapport with them in order to be able to appropriately convey information to them.

I am Japanse living in London for many years. I am thinking of returning to Japan this year or next year and taking CELTA as a 'token' of living in London. I am not a teacher, but I want to work for state schools where all kinds of students can go regardless of whether they are intelligent or not and whether their family is wealthy or not. But the thing is, CELTA may be overqualification for working in state schools in Japan. Most English teachers in Japan can't speak English at all. So, I think CELTA is a too different teaching method for Japanese students. I will be in an interview next week and will ask the interviewer about it. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Hello Martha, I’d really like to say thank you for having clarified some of my doubts. I would like to take the CELTA course on site. But I have two locations in mind, one is San Sebastián Spain and the second option is England, I’m not sure about the city yet. The Spanish option is because some of my relatives live there, and the place is beautiful. The second choice is because I’ve heard that the certification is more appreciated when it’s taken in an English speaking country’ I’ve already lived in an English speaking country before (USA) on the contrary I’m from a Spanish speaking country like Spain, I don’t know how influential can the place where you take the course be when it comes to getting a job.

@martafromhowtoteach9615 жыл бұрын
Hi there 😊, first of all congrats 💪💪. Don’t worry too much, we all make mistakes, we’re only humans. Having said that it is important to remember that as English teachers we should strive for correctness. Just make sure your lessons are prepared well, you know the meaning and the pronunciation of new vocabulary, you know how to explain certain grammar rules. When you create a lesson plan think of questions that your students may ask and make sure you know how to answer them. A good thing about being a non-native teacher is your own experience in learning a foreign language. So, you can easily foresee what you might be asked. In order to feel less stressed, after you prepare a lesson a plan have a bit of practice of your lesson. Make sure you can give clear instructions, explanations etc. As for everyday interactions with other teachers I wouldn’t be worried too much. They are all stressed as well. Just enjoy it. You’ve passed your interview so I’m sure you’ll be fine 😊. If there is anything you need I’m happy to help. Good luck. 🍀

@martafromhowtoteach9615 жыл бұрын
Theaster Hi there 😊, I’m not sure what you mean, IELTS is a language certificate that you need to pass ( an academic level) if you’re planning to take studies. CELTA is a teaching certificate that entitles you to teach EFL/ESL students. To tell you the truth, I’m not sure if you can use CELTA instead of IELTS as these are two very different certificates. Having said that, it may varies between the countries and if you want to study, let’s say, TESOL then you may contact the university you’re applying for and ask them about it. I believe that contacting universities directly is the best way to do it 😊. I hope it helps, have a lovely day. 🍀🍀

@@martafromhowtoteach961 Hi Marta, thanks for your answers :) Currently I am a student and my English is oscilated between B1-C1, everything depends on what we are talking about: speaking, writing or listening and so on. I know that there are a lot of different videos on YT, but why not? :) And maybe how to understand wishes for Polish people or other "hard" English grammar constructions? Greetings :) By the way, do you think people like me, whose English level is not yet C2, but I hope one day it will, are able to pass CELTA, without having diploma in either linguistics or english philology?
@martafromhowtoteach9614 жыл бұрын
Vic Vic Hi there, thanks for all your great suggestions, brilliant ideas. 😊. As for my accent it’s typically Polish but it’s great to hear that I sound more natural. As a kid of 1980s in Poland I hadn’t been given a chance to learn English until I was 14 years old which is a bit late to gain a nice, native-like pronunciation but I would say what helped me the most in practising my pronunciation was watching and listening to loads of different films, songs or radio stations in English and not only listening to but also imitating and parroting phrases in English, every day, consistently for many years, so it involved a lot of talking to myself 😂😂. As for CELTA, I’d waited too long before I applied because I was constantly thinking that I wasn’t good enough. Don’t make the same mistake. You can always apply and see what happens during your interview, if worst comes to worst they may suggest you should improve in one or two areas of English or sth else and then you will reapply. However, what’s crucial is to know why you want to do CELTA. For me it was a chain reaction, I really wanted to work at language schools in England during summer holidays so I decidedly to do CELTA in the UK, it gave me both: the qualifications and more confidence ( which is sth I’ve been always lacking), then once I got a job at language schools in the UK I decided to take the next step and I did PGCE, then worked in mainstream schools in the UK, then at British Council in Poland etc. So I think it is really important to have a plan and not waste a lot of money on CELTA without really knowing what to do with that. For me it was the fact that I survived CELTA in the UK that gave me confidence to keep going for you it may be something else. I hope it helps 😊. All the best and keep my updated.
