This is just one of the best songs from the great partnership of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. They wrote hit after hit and their wonderful songs are enjoyed worldwide. You could make a list of all those great songs, but it would take too long 😏 The album this song is on has others like Midnight Creeper, Elderberry Wine and Have Mercy on the Criminal, a dramatic song with wonderful vocal work from Elton.

Elton John has had over 50 top 40 hits in the USA. Elton does not write lyrics but most of the lyrics for his music are written by his long time lyricist, Bernie Taupin. However, Elton can write the music for anybody's lyrics with seemingly great ease. He demonstrated this ability in the video called The Oven Song in front of a live audience. I hope you will check it out for yourself to see how effortless this talent seems to be for him. Please also try the studio version of the song called Honky Cat.

“Daniel” is a song by British singer and songwriter Elton John. According to John’s longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin (who wrote the lyrics of this song), he was inspired to write the lyrics of “Daniel” after reading an article published in Time magazine about the touching story of several Vietnam War veterans who back home to the United States in the hope of enjoying some quiet and peace of mind (a normal life). However, when most of them got home, they were bombarded with a great deal of attention, which they greatly disliked. According to Taupin, he picked the story and wrote it from the point of a view of a younger brother. The younger brother misses his disabled war veteran older brother named Daniel who travels far away from home in order to get away from the attention he was receiving at home. Taupin explained that the lyrics of “Daniel” tell the story of a soldier (Daniel) who returns to a town in Texas after fighting in the Vietnam War. In the small Texas town, the soldier is praised as a hero and given so much attention. However, he finds the hero treatment and the excessive attention given him very uncomfortable because all he wants is to go back to his normal and quiet life in his farm. Owing to the extraordinary attention he receives from his people, he decides to travel to Spain. Hence the famous line “Daniel is traveling tonight on a plane”. But why Spain? Taupin chose Spain because it rhymes perfectly with the word “plane”. According to Taupin, in writing this song, his main goal was to come up with something that “was sympathetic” to the soldiers who came back home from the Vietnam War. SONGFACTS The lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin, Elton's writing partner. He explained the inspiration on his web site: "I'd seen this article in Time magazine on the Tet Offensive. And there was a sidebar next to it with a story about how many of the soldiers that were coming back from 'Nam were these simple sort of down home country guys who were generally embarrassed by both the adulation and, depending on what part of the country you came from, the animosity that they were greeted by. For the most part, they just wanted to get back to a normal life, but found it hard, what with all the looky loos and the monkeys of war that they carried on their backs. I just took it from there and wrote it from a younger brother's perspective; made him disabled and wanting to get away. I made it Spain, basically, because it rhymes with plane." When Elton wrote the music for this song, he chopped off the last verse because he thought the song was already too long. The deleted verse explained that "Daniel" was a Vietnam vet who returned home to the farm after the war, couldn't find peace, and decided to leave America and go to Spain. With the last verse chopped off, it became a fairly vague story of two brothers who part ways, although Bernie Taupin says that losing the verse wasn't a big deal. Said Taupin: "We had that whole thing about the missing verse that everybody seems to believe explained the true meaning of the song. I think that's just an urban legend. It didn't really explain anything. Sure, it was cut out. But that used to happen all the time with our songs. I would often overwrite, and Elton felt it necessary to edit somewhat. But believe me, it didn't say anything that the rest of the song didn't say."

Lol yea he's still alive, and is back as Elton's drummer for the tours. Interestingly, he started out as a guitar player, but switched to drums because he thought it would be easier to dodge thrown beer bottles by hiding behind the drum set. Also, he couldn't, and still can't, read music...which is pretty amazing considering that when playing for Elton, he created the drumming for every song he played on, with no input from Elton (the whole band did this btw).

Bernie Taupin wrote the song's lyrics after reading an article in either Time or Newsweek about a Vietnam War veteran who had been wounded, and wanted to get away from the attention he was receiving when he went back home. The last verse in the original draft was cut from the final version, which has led to some speculation on the contents. "'Daniel' had been the most misinterpreted song that we'd ever written," explained Taupin, in the Two Rooms tribute project. "The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam War. They'd lauded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. But he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and try to get back to the life that he'd led before. I wanted to write something that was sympathetic to the people that came home."

THANKYOU, I was thinking for ones that keep getting blocked, how about we watch you react to it, but the video is silent for us and only can be heard by you so we can see your reaction and know what bit you're up to in seeing your face, then at the end you edit in you telling us what you think about it. That way we still get to know if you enjoyed it or not. And that is really the purpose I guess, although we do love enjoying it right along with you if it can be helped. Darn production companies and their stupid rules .

In his early years from 1970 to 1975 he was not only one of the greatest talents that pop music ever heard but the biggest performer with hit after non stop hit with fantastic songs. Live or original he was the man!Try Madman Across The Water, Levon, And Indian Sunset! After he hit it big he started doing more commercial songs not nearly as good and then later he had an operation on his vocal chords and he could no lionger hit the high notes. Bernie Taupin wrote almost all Elton’s songs!👍🏻❤️☮️✌🏻

Elton has a deep rabbit hole of a music catalog. I didn't like everything he did but I can certainly understand why these songs were popular. He uses musical hooks in a very intelligent way. As I understand it, Elton didn't want 'Daniel' to be a single. His record company insisted. It was a big hit and remains one of his very best.

If not, it'd be a good choice for next Elton John song. By the way, there's another reactor, JustJP, who often reacts with sound muted and with a link at the top of the comments for the music link - that way people can open both videos and synch the sound of one with the reaction from the other. I really appreciate your reactions. Seems like you really look for the meaning, and hear the instrumentation and other musicians and their styles and skills. And look into the history of the artist and the song.... In other words, that you're really on a music journey and not too focused on the different ways to monetize or such. Everyone has to make a living, I get that, but sometimes it seems that starts taking precedence over the journey. Different strokes for different folks but I am appreciating your channel! Also, it's like you're in my head with the songs you pick and it's almost spooky! lol.

Elton NEVER sings to recorded tracks when he goes on TV, unless he is without his band, like when he went on the Muppet show. Whoever edits these videos takes the LIVE version of him singing and mixes it with the studio recording that was released.

Yeah a live stream of an album reaction would be GREAT if you’re not going to do Patreon.

I assume that you know this, but the reason that many of your videos get blocked, is that you don't pause. Playing the video straight through is more pleasant for the viewer, but it's just begging to be snagged for copyright reasons.

Unmarked LIVE content. No warning in the title makes one click... then the pause button, then the dislike button then the click away... All that wasted effort. Help me out, here Man! ;-]
