I have 5 songs I definitely put in my top 5 of Elton - this is among those 5. I just saw him live a week ago - his Farewell YellowBrick Road tour here in Santa Clara (just outside SF). Phenomenal show. 75 years old, been doing shows and singing since he was 17. There were few dry eyes in the audience when he kissed us all goodbye one last time and disappeared. Magical ending to the concert. "I will always love all of you - you'll always be in my heart and my soul....but I must go now and spend my remaining days with my family." which then kicked off "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". He stepped off his piano on to some elevator - it lifted him about 30ft in the air he air-kissed the audience, turned and stepped off onto some rigging I''m sure but it was dark and camoflauged so it looked like he just walked into nothing. Then the big screen that was behind the stage show came on showing a picturesque field with colorful flowers and a yellow-brick road (the album cover), and suddenly an image appeared of him - so it looked like he stepped off the stage an into the screen then the image in his glittery coat walked away - stopped for a moment looked over his shoulder one last time, and then skipped away forever. Very bittersweet moment. One last thing - he played ALL 5 of my top favs.

I always thought this song was about the bicentennial, and our ancestors who fought for our freedoms. I found out years later it was a tribute to Billy Jean King. I must admit I was disappointed that it wasn't written about the bicentennial. It came out around that time, and was a perfect fit.

Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to this song and he eventually became an American citizen he loves America so much. He even now makes American flag art now which incorporates American flags (people even send him their old flags that are worn out) into his artwork. Bernie definitely was referencing America in this song (as well as it being a tribute to Billie Jean King) he is a master lyricist with a gift for using euphemisms in his lyrics and a great human being !!! Thank God he and Elton John found each other in 1967 and were able to create all of this beautiful music together.

Elton had quite a few hits that cracked the Soul and R&B charts back in the day. This one, Island Girl, and Bennie & the Jets crossed over from the pop charts and were all hits on black radio back when there was still a lot of musical segregation going on. I think there's a clip of him doing Bennie & the Jets on Soul Train. Music is universal!

@@MsTruthseeker999 I know I'm 'that guy' but 'Island Girl' was from 'Rock of the Westies', about three albums after 'Yellow Brick Road'. If you don't know that one too well, I think it's a really good album with some good rock songs and one of Elton's very best ballads, 'I Feel Like A Bullet (In the Gun of Robert Ford)'.

This song when I first heard it, I thought it was about American freedom, the city that produced the Declaration of Independence & the US Constitution. It could be interpetuted that way. But in reality Elton John wrote it about World Team Tennis team Philadelphia Freedom in 1974. He also wrote it for his good friend tennis great Billie Jean King. Because to wish her luck as she started her venture in World Team Tennis as co-owner of the league. She was also a Player-Coach of the team. The song was released February 24, 1975 after the team played their final match in the city. The league was Announced: May 22,1973 Disbanded: March 1979 First match: May 6, 1974 Last match: Sept. 21, 1978 5 seasons 26 teams (clubs folded & new ones started) Florida had a team called The Florida Flamingos based in Miami only lasted one year 1974. World Team Tennis had such professional players as Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert, Vitas Gerulaitus, Evonne Goolagong, Rod Laver, Martina Navratilova, John Newcome, Virginia Wade playing on some of the teams.

Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to most of Elton John's songs, but Elton would occasionally suggest titles. Elton requested a song with the title "Philadelphia Freedom" in honor of his friend, the tennis player Billie Jean King. At the time, there was a professional tennis league in America called World Team Tennis, and in 1974 King coached a team called the Philadelphia Freedoms, becoming one of the first women ever to coach men. Taupin had no obligation to write lyrics about King, and he didn't - the song was inspired by the Philadelphia soul sound of groups like The O'Jays and Melvin & The Blue Notes, and also the American bicentennial; in 1976 the US celebrated 200 years of independence. Elton John and Billie Jean King became good friends after meeting at a party. Elton tried to attend as many of her matches as he could, and he promised King a song after she gave him a customized track suit. Elton and Billie Jean King would become icons of the gay and lesbian community, but at the time, they were both still in the closet, since athletes and entertainers faced a backlash if they revealed their homosexuality. Elton was often answering questions about why he hadn't settled down with a girl, and King avoided the subject as best she could, but was forced to come out in 1981 when a former lover sued her for palimony. King was married to a man up until her outing, and Elton was married to a woman from 1984-1988. (Songfacts.com)

Bernie Taupin, who shared the songwriting credit for “Philadelphia Freedom,” has said the song was not about tennis. But his and John's song is clearly a tribute to the soul of the city, to freedom and to Elton John's friend Billie Jean King: Shine a light wont you shine a light.

Doesn't anybody know their music history any more? There was a major culture shift between 1969 and 1980 in Philadelphia! There was a group of exceptional studio musicians at Sigma Studios. Sigma was ahead of its time with Joe Tarsia as owner. Many of the musicians were already recording in small groups, as well as arranging and producing. Baker, Harris and Young for example. They and others were part of MFSB, the backing musicians for so many of singers who were produced by Thom Bell (The Spinners, The Stylistics, The Delphonics, etc.); Gamble and Huff (The O'Jays, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, etc.). So many different acts came to Philly to have BHY write, play, arrange and produce for them. For example BB King, The Whispers, The Modulations, Mighty Clouds of Joy, Eddie Kendricks, The Four Tops and The Temptations, Jermaine Jackson, Eddie Holman, Blue Magic etc. Then they moved to Salsoul with Vince Montana. But that's another story.

When you take your road trip to Philly, stop through Maryland and I'll treat you guys to some delicious crab cakes. Philadelphia is known for their cheesesteaks, and Maryland is known for its Chesapeake Blue Crabs, straight from the Chesapeake Bay. They can't be beat! Great reaction, by the way. Nothing like a great old tune by Elton and Bernie.

Phantastic reaction! *Love the cheesesteak metaphor, Lex, you're amazing!* ps~When you come to The City of Brotherly Love, go to *Jim's Steaks* on South Street for the best cheesesteak. (I get mine with White America cheese & no onions, but you can choose Cheese Whiz and/or onions. Forget peppers or shrooms, those are not authentic.) And in Philly, we don't call them, "Philly cheesesteaks", they're just, "cheesesteaks". Oh, and to burn off the calories, head right for the Art Museum to run up the steps like Rocky!

You couldn't pay me to go to Philly right now - too much chaos and crime. Although eating a cheesesteak in Philly IS something special.

Oh please you're listening to Faux news trying to scare you away from our cities. If you stick to a downtown regular neighborhood, you will never have a problem. And you will be able to participate in the great shopping and dining.

You're quite welcome. The whole concert is on here also. It's a little over an hour and includes a little info on how it came to be. Well worth your time. The first song, "60 years on" will hook you.

Farmer Bill, I had never seen that before, must be a bad fan or something. Amazing. Every live version of this song is great - I'm no musician but I think it's always played a little faster than the original recording and it really gets my heart going every time. I have to sit down for a few minutes now, or maybe lie down in a field. If you know of one.

Pretty much what I always thought. Philadelphia (and San Francisco) was one of the earliest cities in the U.S. to be acceptive and welcoming to gays, lesbians, and trans.
