And the lyrics, on this entire album, beginning to end, are the absolute best lyrics ever written across an album in rock history. Every single song. The lyrics. OMG the lyrics. Check out the song "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" for it's lyrics. Just unbelievably beautiful and deep and engaging.

BTW... saw EJ perform this live at the Hollywood Bowl, outdoors, under a full moon. The word epic falls short of describing it.

In an article in American Songwriter it brings out that in the summer of 1970 Elton John nearly married then secretary longtime girlfriend Linda Woodrow but he was also struggling with his own sexuality. In his autobiography, John speaks candidly about his struggle to accept his sexuality and the fear he felt about coming out in such a public way. John knew things weren’t quite clicking in the two year relationship and he didn’t know how to call off the upcoming nuptials. During a night of drinking with blues singer Long John Baldry and long-time collaborator Bernie Taupin they convinced John not to go through with it. The marriage was less than a month away. Quite intoxicated John came home later that night around 4:30 am and called the whole thing off. To make matters worse his fiance Woodrow, John and Taupin were all sharing a flat in London’s East End while Woodrow had been supporting the household financially. In 2010 Woodrow recounted the break-up and its emotional toll. “I was devastated. My whole family was feeling for me because they were expecting a wedding. The song makes reference to John’s sheer desperation and suicide attempt. “I never realized the passin’ hours of evening showers / A slip noose hangin’ in my darkest dreams / I’m strangled by your haunted social scene,” he sings on the second verse. John tried to asphyxiate himself with a gas oven however the kitchen window was wide-open rendering it fruitless. Linda had said she and Taupin “found him lying with his head in the gas oven with the window wide open. At the time he said it was because his music career wasn’t taking off as quickly as he hoped. He was in one of his big depressions. Later, John opened up about the experience in a piece for The Guardian, writing “I really had staged a completely ridiculous suicide bid that involved sticking my head in a gas oven rather than tell my fiancée I’d made a mistake. That was my brilliant plan to try and get out of the wedding.”

I love this song...though I think the beauty covers up a bit how dark it is. He's talking about being caught in a relationship to the point that he is contemplating suicide. Never realized the passing hours of evening showers Slip noose hanging in my darkest dreams I'm strangled by your haunted social scene Just a pawn outplayed by a dominating queen I would have walked head on into the deep end of the river Clinging to your stocks and bonds Paying your H.P. demands forever The other thing is how amazing the band was on this song. Nigel Olsson playing the drums so emotionally, and the band's backing vocals are just beautiful.
