One of the most beautiful songs you will ever hear.

Anyone hearing this for the first time...listen to it again, and pay attention to what the band is doing (including their vocals). There is a reason why Elton was able to produce so much music, and at such high quality. This album was so good that it debuted on the Billboard charts at #1...the first album to do so in music history.

Sugar bear was his friend who kept him from marrying a woman who didn't have Eltons best interests at heart."You nearly had me roped and tied, altar bound...." Anyway, it's a beautiful song about freedom!

I jokingly used to say Sugar Bear was a reference to the Golden Crisp cereal mascot, also called Sugar Bear.

Best track on the album. You can hear EJ's heart in this and coupled with Dee Murray's always excellent bass and Nigel Olsen's impeccable drumming...

Elton was set to marry his girlfriend, even though he knew he had feelings for men. His buddy Long John Baldry talked him out of Getting Married, Long John Baldry aka Sugar Bear.

Elton John has some unbeatable albums. Almost anything from the 70's is fire up until 1976 when he debuted at #1 with two albums on the album chart that year, setting the record for first artist ever to do it. Suggested albums for review : Tumbleweed Connection, Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy😮😊ENJOY

I've written something like this in other reactions to this one, but I remember first hearing it in summer 1975 while playing kickball on our northern Alabama street, as my friend's older brother drove in, playing it loudly on his car radio. I was just a tween, and this made such a fabulous impact. Glorious summer days.

It's funny to me that you said this song had too many words to remember. This was my favourite album as a pre-teen. I literally played it thousands of times, sometimes just this one song over and over. I knew the lyrics off by heart then, and I still remember them all to this day.
@mrscottify4 ай бұрын
Elton has always said this song, musically, was a tribute to Brian Wilson/The Beach Boys. Speaking technically, Brian Wilson was one of the first pop/rock acts to take the root note (base key) of the chord (3 or more notes played at once) in the left hand and move it to the 3rd or 5th of the chord, which brings drama to the sound. There are only 1-2 chords in this song that are not slash chords (chord played in right hand with 3rd or 5th played instead of the base note a la Brian Wilson) it adds so much gravitas to the feel of the instrumentation.

Elton’s early life story is really interesting - the woman he wrote this about who he almost married, she was part of his life story but she’s not in the movie about his life. I used to get lost in Elton and Bernie’s albums for hours - lyrics & stories -& artwork!
