Diego Garcia-Borreguero, MD, PhD, Sleep Research Institute, Madrid, Spain, discusses novel guidelines in the management of restless legs syndrome (RLS), where there is a newfound emphasis on treating the underlying cause of the disorder rather than simply relying on symptomatic relief. Measuring brain iron levels has been suggested as a disease-modifying strategy. Transcranial ultrasound can be used to assess brain iron levels, but not all clinicians may have access to such techniques. Contraindications for intravenous iron therapy include high serum ferritin levels, high transferrin saturation, and a family history of hemochromatosis. This interview took place at the Sleep Europe 2024 congress in Seville.
