(1:06 - Start of Presentation) Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin. Recorded on 05/26/2009. [7/2009] [Show ID: 16717]

I stopped eating sugar and drinking soda the weekend before Thanksgiving 2020. I started out at 212.8 pounds. I am down to 188.2 pounds, and I feel great. My doctor told me my blood sugar was at the level to be classified as a type 2 diabetic. That did it. I knew I had to change my diet. Sugar was my drug of choice. I have had issues with joint pain for years. I have arthritis, and being overweight for years, and the sugar made it worse. After stopping eating sugar, and losing the weight, my joints have stopped hurting. My mind is clear. I was having issues concentrating. Now I don't. I work 12 hour shifts. I used to feel wiped out by the end of my shift. Now I don't. My wife and I have started keto. She has gone from 235 down to 217. Her joint pain has stopped too. Sugar is poison. It's also addictive. It's literally killing people. Something must be done. Processed foods are formulated to be addictive. Eating healthy is expensive. Eating unhealthy is cheap. That's why poor people are overweight more than people who aren't poor. This has to change. Our society is being destroyed by sugar addiction. All kids should watch this video, as well as adults. Money is all that matters to the powers that be. Our health means nothing. Take control of your health people. It can be done. DO IT!!!!!

congratulations on making changes. I hope that you are able to continue on this path. It is inspiring that the joint pain can stop by cutting sugar out. I have just been diagnosed with arthritis at 52 and have terrible pain in the knees. Now I am inspired that I can live pain free again if I can resist the cravings for sugar. thank you for giving more details. Do you think cutting sugar helped more or doing keto was more helpful?

@@christineklem2099 I stopped eating sugar, and drinking soda before I got on the keto diet. My wife decided to do keto, so I am doing it with her. I think stopping the sugar made the most difference. But it's easier to lose weight if you're doing it with someone, so the keto is helping both of us achieve our goals. Good luck. If I can do it, you can too.

Knowing I’m overweight because of a chemical imbalance in my brain rather than because I’m weak and lazy is such a revelation. So much easier to avoid a food that you know is going to chemically make you more hungry than just avoiding it because it’s high in calories. Found this video 15 days into keto, and I’m so much less hungry already. I’m down 33lbs……but knowing these sugars trick my brain makes them far less appealing…..before on diets I felt I was depriving myself of delicious foods…..knowing I’m depriving myself of delicious poison makes it far easier.

No because this is pure propaganda and lies. I'll show you why this man can't be trusted and hopefully you open your eyes to see other people that are deceiving you. First he says that we are all getting fatter this is not true I'm not fatter I know a lot of people that are not fat, contrary to what the stereotype says most Americans are not obese. Explain why six year olds are obese because they're not going outside and playing like they used to. And their family gives them unhealthy stuff all the time like sodas and candy and chips and stuff. Because unhealthy stuff is cheaper than heathy stuff He also says that it is not the fault of the obese people it they are victims. This is not true even if what he was saying was true. You would still be the fault, even if he was right. because they're drinking all these sodas and everyone knows it bad for them and will make the fat. But he says what he says because he wants to elicit your emotions not your logic and obese people like being the victims. He also uses emotionally charged words like telling you how sugar is poison or that these things horrendous, or the Coca-Cola conspiracy. Or how he says everyone is getting bigger which is simply not true. Of course none of these people are eating less or exercising, but I'm sure that's just a coincidence. The real issue is that we don't understand the idea that you don't need to be full all time and we live too solitary a lifestyle. Also their metabolism.

+A Closer Look our bodies use fructose to make glucose to be burned as fuel for every cell & why did the brilliant Dr. Lustig not inform all that were listening in on that lecture that fructose is a simple sugar it has NO TIME to rot anywhere simple sugars are assimilated INSTANTLY by our bodies WITHOUT THE NEED FOR A VAPOR OF ONE DROP of insulin produced in order to metabolize? well of course he didn't tell anyone that because for starters he doesn't know what simple sugars are he probably correlates HIIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP with fructose in fruit because most people who think they know what they're talking about do what people need to understand is our body converts EVERYTHING we eat into sugar to fuel our bodies so our body is bad for us if Dr. Lustig is correct "good thing he has NO IDEA"
@acloserlook5823
@acloserlook5823 8 жыл бұрын
bud385 No he covers the fruit thing. The idea is that in nature fructose is found in plants with very high fiber density. The fiber inhibits the absorption of the fructose to a healthy rate. Refining the fructose without the fiber is what causes the negative feedback loop. All explained right here in this video you didn't watch.

I was binge watching Andrew Huberman’s KZbin channel during this insanely long 2-month lockdown that happened accidentally in Shanghai. In one of his videos he mentioned Robert Lustig and I traced all the way to this video. This video and a bunch of others scared the hell out of me since basically all my family members have some kind of metabolic syndrome (Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, high uric acid, hypertension) and not all of them are obese. Now I finally know that root cause of these metabolic diseases is the increase in percentage of sugar and processed food intake. Immediately after watching this video, I got rid of all my processed food and sugar in my diet. (which is easy during the lockdown but very hard after the lockdown, because sucrose is ingrained in the Shanghainese food culture) It’s been around 1 week and I noticed a dramatic improvement in my teeth. I no longer develop calculus on my teeth even if I reduced my frequency of brushing to once a day. And I feel much better psychologically. Thank you for all that information. I wish I have watched this video when I was in middle school. (Because that was the time for me to start eating more sugar and processed food.) I always knew sugar and processed food are bad, that’s what our teachers told us, but I never knew they were bad to this extent.

@@tammv2306 I hate the global meat industry but that just led me to buy my food from a local farm instead. I can actually see the chickens and cows hanging out in the pasture, so I at least know the animals aren't being abused, and getting something much closer to a natural diet. It's a lot more expensive but I have a feeling the time of cheap meat will soon be over, what with the whole "eat zee bugs" signaling and "global supply chain problems", and the US government apparently now paying the big farming companies to NOT grow food, etc etc. Do you like chicken soup? Just boil a whole chicken, with some coarsely chopped onion, celery, and carrots, and a tablespoon of thyme. You can also add a head of garlic if that's your thing. Bring up to a high boil for about 10 minutes, then lower to a simmer for 1-2 hours (I like 2 hours best). That gives you a bunch of good broth, chicken, and cooked vegetables, which I would recommend separating and freezing in lots of small containers. It's easy to thaw it by boiling the broth and dropping in the other stuff, so you don't need to use the microwave. That can take care of your dinner for about a week. (Soup and sandwiches!)

This mom took her kid to a Dr in Chicago who at the time was the only Dr around that recognized the term hypoglycemia. He gave an 8 hr glucose tolerance test. So my mom took me to see him and found that I had hypoglycemia. It saved my life. Sugar was killing me. Since hypoglycemia was discovered it released many people from mental hospitals. If your brain doesn't have glucose or blood sugar it won't function properly. Hypoglycemia is a condition where the body produces too much insulin that takes all sugar and gets rid of it leaving you with no brain sugar.

@@hlessiavedon uh how is that relevant? My point is that carbs are pretty much irrelevant and you can cut them massively as any food you eat which is rich in fat or protein will supply you with enough carbs on the side. Protein is truly the king of weight loss and that is the hardest part. Theoretically if you have enough protein and low carbs, there won't be a problem at all

Dear UCTV, could you help me understand these two issues: At 27:42 Mr Lustig doesn't mention that between 1-3 servings a day, fruit juice is *not* worsening obesity, because the graph is in *negative* numbers. Which would fit very well with the saying "the dose makes the poison" (at least in German we say that). He's right about a fatty liver, but he doesn't interpret the column chart / bar graph completely (but seems to cherry pick the last two negative charts). The second issue I have is: that he also doesn't talk about eating fruit (outside of fruit juice). People could easily concluce "I'll stop eating fruit now because fructose is deadly", although an apple might just be as harmless as juice, when the amount of it is moderate (also, fruit has los of vitamins and I'm confused he doesn't say one word about that)... Even if noone concludes this, it unnecessarily demonizes fruit like apples, pears, bananas. Aside from that, thank you for giving us the whole movie for free.

@@NoNameArtist89 (1:14:53) When you eat a fruit raw, you're eating the fiber with the fruit which helps give you the satiety signal, telling you to stop eating. The fiber also suppresses your insulin (good or bad I can't say). The problem with juice is that all of the fiber is taken out, which increases the fructose's intake per second (juice is more concentrated), but also in the amount of times you drink it, because the satiety signal is delayed. This means that children would end up drinking up more fructose. So to address the first issue. Looking at the far end of the chart is reasonable in my opinion for the reason that the fiber is taken out, removing a critical satiety signal to stop drinking. To address the second issue, (22:05) he shows a comparison of a normal diet eating fruit and vegetables in contrast to a normal diet. Due to the previous diet usually not having health concerns, it's safe to say a fruit and vegetable diet is safe.
@NoNameArtist89
@NoNameArtist89 3 ай бұрын
@@DericHuynh-gw4bb Ok, satiety signal is a point. For me personally, however, it doesn't remove the "trust issue" that came up with me for his *overall* interpretation of this graph. Cherrypicking the last two charts to "give evidence" for how fructose is bad, is just not good/not professional; it should have been interpreted completely, especially because between less servings a day, it seems to be correlated to *less* obesity, which collides with his main point. Fruit is not a demon, but he acts a little like it is. It is good if people are passionate, but cherrypicking data is a temptation each professional can withstand. My opinion. Second issue: Thanks, I think you wanted to help or support. Appreciated :) I didn't seriously become afraid of fruit, but I've heard of other people who stopped eating it completely (due to some health issues) and I'm not sure if missing out on vitamins that way, is healthier than before...
@DericHuynh-gw4bb
@DericHuynh-gw4bb 3 ай бұрын
@@NoNameArtist89 The stats argue that Fruit Juice specifically is very bad. I would argue that fruit (not juiced) is also still relatively not that good. I'm not talking black and white, its on a sliding scale. Yes, you can and do get vitamins from fruit, which is good. You also get fiber which helps alleviate some of the problems of fructose, but you still get the fructose/sucrose which is not optimal. This would make fruit (in my opinion) in the middle range of healthiness. You probably won't get obese from it, nor sick, but it's technically better that you eat dark leafy greens (although there's diminishing returns). Now to address the negative(?) correlation of the graph. It's obviously positively correlated, you can just look at it and you can see it increase when more juice is served. Of course, you're worried more about the negative bar in the 1-3 servings range. I went to the original research paper this was pulled from, which you can find by googling the citation in the bottom left corner of the video. The BMI Z score on the y-axis is the standard deviation of a persons body mass index (BMI) from their age/ethnic group. You can then infer that a negative bar means they're becoming less fat relative to the average of their age/ethnic group. A positive bar means that they're becoming more fat relative to that group. It is RELATIVE. Not absolute. Because this is a study of obesity, in a time of obesity. The average is expectedly quite high in absolute terms, which means that moderation of their juice intake will result in becoming less fat relative to their peers, if their peers on average drink more than they do. Through this logic, you can come to the conclusion that the average peer in their group drinks between 3-4 servings of juice every day. If the child drank less than that, their BMI would be lower relative to the ones who stayed the same, which results in a negative BMI Z score. This is reasonable if a serving is a 200ml cardboard juice box, as 3 to 4 (3.5) servings is 2.9 cups. I personally drank 1 cup a day from the tropicana-like 2.6L bottles when got home when I was little, not including the juice box(es) I brought to school. Lower than average, but I'm also skinny so it correlates regardless. TLDR: The y-axis is relative to the average of every child of the same age outside of the study. Because the average is quite high in modern times, it basically means that the children that were actively moderated just lost weight relative to their fatter peers, which reflects through the negative bar chart.

Here's my notes for the talk: There are many different types of sugars, but the ones you need to know about are: Fructose, Glucose, Sucrose, Lactose Leptin is a chemical that your body releases that reduces hunger. Ghrelin is a chemical that your body releases that increases hunger. Sucrose: - This is what cane sugar and beet sugar consists of. - Sucrose is a combination of Glucose + Fructose. -- Your liver will quickly break the bond between Glucose and Fructose. -- So each sucrose molecule results in your body getting 1 Fructose molecule (which is bad for you) and 1 Glucose molecule. -- So to understand the effects of sucrose (e.g. cane sugar), you need to understand what Fructose and Glucose do. -- So essentially there is almost no difference, chemically at least, between eating Sucrose (e.g. cane sugar) and High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). - Coca-cola is 10.5% Sucrose/HFCS. High Fructose Corn Syrup: - A mix of Fructose and Glucose molecules, each of which your body must then process. Glucose: - Suppose you consume 120 calories of Glucose (e.g. 2 slices of white bread). -- 80 - 90% of this Glucose will be used by all of the organs in the body. A small part of it will be turned into fat. --- In contrast, Fructose is only processed by the liver with a large part of it being turned into fat. -- Every cell in your body can use Glucose. Every bacteria in your body can use Glucose. "Every living thing on the face of the Earth can use Glucose". -- Liver cells release insulin which signals to your brain "stop eating". -- Thus Glucose consumption reduces hunger. Fructose: - Fructose (and consequently sucrose) is a poison. - Fructose is processed almost exclusively by your liver (in contrast to Glucose, which can be used by any cell of your body). - Fructose does NOT suppress Ghrelin (a "hunger hormone") - "Acute Fructose does not stimulate insulin (or leptin) release. -- "If insulin doesn't go up then leptin doesn't go up, and if leptin doesn't go up then your brain doesn't see that you ate something." - Fructose causes metabolic syndrome. - Fructose stimulates your liver cells to create new fat. Glucose does not do this. - Fructose causes insulin resistance in liver cells. -- Fructose causes more new fat to be created and more energy to be turned directly into fat. -- Fructose causes the pancreas to work harder and release more insulin. --- Higher insulin (if too high) cause the brain to not notice leptin as much as it otherwise would (this prevents hunger from being reduced). Fiber: - Fiber is (de facto) an essential nutrient. -- The government not listing fiber as an essential nutrient allows high fiber foods to be exported. - Causes your brain to receive the satiety signal sooner. - Causes an increase in Short Chain Fatty acids, which help to suppresses insulin (thereby reducing hunger). - "Reduces rate of intestinal carbohydrate absorption, reducing insulin." -- The bacteria in your gut consume the excess carbohydrates, which ultimately makes you pass gas. - Although fruit has sugar in it (Sucrose and Fructose), it has a lot more fiber than it has sugar so you don't gain nearly as much weight from eating fruit as you would from consuming the same amount of sugar in candy or a drink. Lactose: - Lactose is a sugar (not very sweet though). - In a milk that does not contain added sugar or chocolate, the sugar content of the milk (on the nutritional label) measures lactose (and not sucrose or fructose). -- So even though such milk has a large amount of sugar on its nutritional label, the milk doesn't make you fat like glucose or sucrose would. Recommendations for losing weight: - Get rid of sugared water -- Only water and milk. - Eat all carbohydrates with FIBER. - Wait 20 minutes before a second portion. Exercise: - Improves skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity, which causes insulin to go down. (This reduces hunger). - Causes TCA cycle to run faster thereby "burning off" the chemicals that are used to produce fat. - Exercise causes weight loss primarily by increasing your metabolism and NOT by directly burning fat EDIT: (Added November 2021 - info. from Wikipedia articles "Sucrose", "Fructose", and "Fructolysis") - About 10% of the calories contained in the Western diet are supplied by fructose (approximately 55 g/day). - Fructose has 95% the caloric value of sucrose by weight. - "Fructose may provide **the bulk** of the carbohydrate directed toward de novo triglyceride synthesis (triglycerides are the main constituents of body fat in humans) in humans." [in short, "the bulk" of brand new fat that you gain comes from fuctose. So most of the fat currently on your body originated from eating fructose/sucrose.] ---- Under one percent of ingested fructose is directly converted to plasma triglycerides [but much more is INdirectely converted to triglycerides]. 29% - 54% of fructose is converted in liver to glucose, and about a quarter of fructose is converted to lactate. 15% - 18% is converted to glycogen. Glucose and lactate are then used normally as energy to fuel cells all over the body. - Unlike glucose, fructose dose not cause insulin to be secreted, and can in fact lower circulating insulin. - Fructose is almost entirely metabolized in the liver in humans, where it is directed toward replenishment of liver glycogen and triglyceride synthesis. In addition to the liver, fructose is metabolized in intestine, testis, kidney, skeletal muscle, fat tissue and brain, but it is not transported into cells via insulin-sensitive pathways - "Sucrose is a disaccharide made up of 50% glucose and 50% fructose" My own conclusion: So when you eat something that on the label says "16g of added sugar", then you may as well assume that a large percentage of that (at least a few grams) will be made into brand new fat stored somewhere in your body.

They are driving us to use the doctors for diabetes and amputations., hypertension etc. Why no salt shakers on tables in restaurants, and sugar packets, where you can add what one likes and not have it overly sweetened and salted for you. America is really a one size fits all. No particular place is different in this respect. I am retired RN, and have degree in health education. My efforts to improve the system was met with hostility because the colleagues were lazy and indulgent, and didn't like to make waves. Accept sex and money for good reports while the providers learned nothing and did not become better providers. And besides it makes the others look bad. Never got a kudos from my government bosses that I helped improve the image of government workers. Hence the 'organic' craze in the last several years. You just need to eat food that occur naturally, not manufactured in a food processing plant (if the elites didn't burn it down). Eat turmeric...

Less Sugar = more sweet, it might sound strange but your taste gets used to the amount of Sugar, if you eat less less sweet things will taste more sweet, so you profit twice, health wise and sweet taste wise.

And if you were to try some of the 'treats' they called 'sweet' back in the 1920s-1960s, you would probably find them bland or even bitter! Just as human have grown accustomed to way too much sugar over the decades, we can wean ourselves off of it, and when you do, things that seem 'just right' will start to taste too sweet, so as to render them unpalatable. Working on keto combined with intermittent fasting. Still winding up to it (with about 60-75% success), but may start with a 24-72 hour clear-liquids fast just to detoxify. Wish me well!!

So this is the reason why I felt healthier living in a rural area of the Philippines where chips, sodas and HFCS products are not available. I ate a lot of Sweet Potatoes and other fruits out there. I was 143 pounds that time. But when I started to live in the City of Manila where Fast Food and Junk Foods are the easiest option, I started feeling weaker, lazier and out of focus. And now, I'm near 190 pounds.

Since pretty much everyone i know it's a sugar addict, it is very hard to help them with this knowledge, and help we all en masse do need. Mostly because of the addiction aspect. 4 months ago I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. My HbA1c (blood glucose) was 73 mmol/mol. Since then I have moved to a mainly wholefoods diet with little processed food and no UPF. I eat many organic things where possible. I eat strictly pumpernickel for bread, no refined carbs, no potatoes, ZERO added sugar and control carb portions to around 50g per meal. I enjoy cheese, fatty natural yoghurt, whole milk and snack on nuts, which keeps my fat intake at a good level. Kimchi, sauerkraut and yoghurt help my microbiome. I have also done a morning workout (exercise bike and weights) 4-5 times a week and have taken 500mg of Metformin twice a day. In 4 months I have lost 17.5Kg/2St 10lbs/38.5lbs and my blood test results today show a HbA1c of 36mmol/mol, which is amazing!

So nice presentation. I would add just one more thing that leads to child obesity. It is low physical activity. I have observed the life of children in the US since time I arrived here. A lot of sweets, uncontrolled junk food (even at schools), and no physical activity. Most kids are transported by parents in cars everywhere. When I pick up my son and we walk back home, people are confused and scared (how it is possible to walk with 6-years old guy).

Exactly, and this is why we need a coalition of people representing the mass population of all humanity in the world to have as their primary objective to do what is right, and good for the maintenance, benefit, prosperity, and well-being of all life on this planet, instead placing all of our trust into any single organization or one human that has a title of the president or king and or queen to determining whether we live or die. No one person should have such authority.
