The thing I love about Eluveitie, is that they don't play metal, and add folk instruments. They play metal with folk instruments. Also, no matter how many times I watch this video, the piper giving the stank face always gets me

The song is about the Welsh island of Anglesey (Ynys Môn in Welsh), famous for being of religious importance to the local Celts and home to druids in the pre-Roman era of Britain. When the Romans invaded they slaughtered the druids and cut down sacred groves on the island.

So happy to see you checking out Eluvietie! You picked a great song. I really hope you do several more because they have SO MANY good songs. If I remember correctly, in the song "Omnos" they use a dead language that's not spoken any more, telling a folk tale. Other good ones are A rose for Epona, Thousandfold, and Brittcom. Keep up the awesome vids brother! ❤

Eluveitie is my favorite band. I know way too much about them and also the folk music aspects. The gurdy’s full name is hurdy gurdy. The solo instrument is an Irish whistle. Looks to be in the key of A (maybe I can’t remember which was used off the top of my head). The higher D version is commonly known as a tin whistle. Eluveitie inspired me to learn whistles and I took lessons from their current whistle player, Matteo, during Covid lockdowns. The bagpipes definitely had a mouth piece. You can see him blowing into it a few times. After you “charge” the bag, you can play for a period of time without blowing more air into it because a check valve keeps it from escaping back out of the mouthpiece. The tune featured in this song is called Tri Martolod (Three Sailors). It is a traditional Breton tune. Most of the folk tunes Eluveitie uses are Irish or Breton. Being a musician yourself, you should check out thesession(dot)org. It’s a huge repository of Celtic folk music transcriptions.

Eluveitie sounds like music from another world. If you haven't heard anything from the 2 acoustic neofolk albums they did they are both really interesting, Evocation I and Evocation II, the atmosphere and mood on them is just phenomenal. Great for mornings and evenings, best in the deep forest at dusk.

Eluveitie are the band that got me into folk metal. I was lucky enough to see them live a couple of years ago. Stoked to see you cover one of their tracks. I'd definitely be curious to see you try one of their acoustic ones like Dessumiis Luge or The Arcane Dominion.

Hey! Welcome to Folk Metal! I'd say you picked a GREAT intro with Eluveitie (pronounced EL-VAY-TEE). They are a Swiss band who focuses on Celtic Themes. They will often do songs in "Gaulish" which is a dead Celtic language (see "Slania's Song). And I've seen a few comments about it, and I have to agree, but what I love about Eluveitie is that the melody is most always done with the folk instruments with the guitars as a backing. They use the following instruments interchangeably: Tin Whistle, Mandola, Hurdy Gurdy, Fiddle, Bag Pipes, Folk Drums, Celtic Harp and others. This is an older (But fan favourite!) song, so you should definitely check out something newer by them especially to see Fabienne! Her clean vocals add so much more depth! I'd recommend the song "Rebirth".

This song is based ("based" is an understatement, the main melody is literally the same) on Alan Sullivan's 1971 version of Tri Martolod, a traditional Breton song.

Yes, that's a hurdy gurdy. The bagpipes were electric (air pumped in) Chrigel was playing a tin whistle during that wind solo (he also plays mandola)

Well this was a pleasure to watch. I wasn’t sure how much time you had to check them out but I’m glad you did! Seems like a lot of people have already given you some background on them! You actually picked the song that started my love of Eluveitie back in 2009. I’ve seen them live a handful of times over the years and every show is an amazing experience. Their newer stuff showcases female vocals mixed with Crigel’s guttural vocals which makes it all really pop! If you’re looking for more to check out I’d recommend: Rebirth, Black Water Dawn, Epona, Exile of the Gods, Aidus (the video for Aidus is incredible), and of course their more traditional version of the Inis Mona ancient melody sung in reconstructed Ancient Gaulish “Ogmios”. Glad you enjoyed the suggestion!

In case you didn't know, the chorus melody is based on a very well known folk song from Normandy, Tri Martolod.

Celtic, Nordic and Germanic/ Slavic culture has shared origins. The Celts conquered as far as Iran, and later on in history Gauls became Germans. There is no seperation between Norse and Germanic paganism ultimately. The only reason people think of Odin as a Norse god is because Scandinavians were the last to bend the knee to abrahamic religion. The song is about inis mona, off the coast of Britain, this was the final druid stronghold that resisted the Roman occupation. The passing of an ogham stick represent the transition of wisdom through generations as European Pagans reincarnated into their children. Wisdom spread through memory, memes and genes.

'Bagpipes' without a mouthpiece are uilleann pipes (see Troy Donockley in Nightwish or Paddy Moloney from the wonderful Chieftans. I don't think that's what's being played here though. I'm sure he's blowing into his but you don't need to blow continuously with bagpipes - once the 'bag' is full, you can play till it empties.

Thanks for the intro to this band. I can only listen to harsh vocals for so long but, I found the melody of the traditional instruments evened it out, and I was struck by how intrigued I was by his voice. The vocals and the "usual" metal and traditional instruments were so well entwined. Plus, you were spot-on about the change-up. Still here, Geebz, as always. I love listening to your take and I get so much more out of the twice baked sessions. Mahalo.

Geebz, the name of the band reads as Helvetie (the ancient name of Switzerland), Eluveitie is a roman era spelling found in an inscription. So the cultural roots of this music are Celtic. No shade, we don't know 'till we know. Try something more recent from them, the new(ish) Aidus or the usual reaction vid, Rebirth. Those will really let you have fun with their transitions and allow you to settle in for a bit in the Celtic sounds before going on to metal again. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ-plGCliJyXrJI and kzbin.info/www/bejne/ml7ThKRqgq-gr5o
