What an honour. Forgive me, not meant lack of respect. Just the information originally as such, and lack of time for a proper research. That information is most welcome, no need to mention the source. Kudos! Happy Holidays and many thanks for the invaluable art!

Wonderful to see this group in video. I've lived with the Lighthouse recording for many years and now to actually see them. Really enjoying the comments here. In the Mosaic compilation of Jones' work, there is a great essay by Dave Liebman about that recording and this group. Also, Liebman and Perla are still active. I've seen them both on the Small's live-stream within the last few months. Both still sound great. Also, George Garzone recently did a recreation of this group at Small's.

Good lord, Dave Liebman is only 27 here and Steve Grossman is 22. Wow, young lions indeed.

I saw all these guys in various combos at Gerde's Folk City and the Village Vanguard in Greenwich Village back in the day. Totally ripping music. Great, thanks for posting!

I am a player. So what i dig here is that these young white boys took this seriously enough to make it come up to the level of actually playing creatively. They worked hard, I promise you.

Of course. All three were giants of jazz before this gig. You may be selling them short. Grossman had been with Miles Davis for three years before this gig and recording with Jones since '71 (four albums). He's on Jack Johnson, the Fillmore, Black Beauty, Big Fun, et al. Leibman's discography speaks for itself. He's on On the Corner and about 250 other albums. Gene Perla was with Nina Simone and Miles Davis before joining Elvin' quartet.

Music is universal, Dude. Melanin isn't a necessary ingredient.

Well, if Elvin Jones plays with you, tours with you, and records with you I’d say you must be pretty damn good 👍

@@prestwickpioneer3474Gene and Jan Hammer were also with Sarah Vaughn prior . If this was the first gig for any of them, it’s doubtful they would have been with Elvin

Playing with ELVIN is like a massive impetus, but they were really good, even so. I saw all of them, and Elvis, and many other luminaries, around the Village in the early 70s.

Straight out of the Gene Perla Loft Sessions. Mintzer and Brecker were right behind these two and were in the lofts also. Besides shedding so much Mintzer told me they used to play together for hours and learned how to hear and interact by playing at the Loft sessions and with each other. It's an aural music so it makes sense. We don't have that environment anymore. Liebman Nick named them The Great NY Jewish Tenor League. Which included Berg. Grossman started young on alto his brother was already a trumpet player and kinda forced him to learn a bunch of Bird solos. Different times huh?
