Elvis (2022) - Movie Review (A Baz Luhrmann Film)

I absolutely loved this movie. The story itself was tragic and heartbreaking, to the point where the ending genuinely made me tear up, which doesn't happen to me very often. The direction, while it took me a bit to get accustomed to Baz Luhrmann's montage-y style, was really good and fit the subject matter very well. Austin Butler absolutely blew me away with his performance. He completely nailed every aspect of the King, and I would be baffled if he doesn't win an Oscar for it. Tom Hanks was also very good, and it was fun to see him in such a different role than he usually plays, and especially such a slimy and villainous one. Every other performance was great, too. The scene when he sings If I Can Dream was one of my favorite movie scenes of the last several years.

As a massive Elvis fan I absolutely loved this movie. I had tears streaming down my face during the final scene, and I looked over to my dad (who is a lifelong Elvis fan) and he was breaking down crying. That was the 3rd time I’ve seen him cry in my entire life

@Will Hatchet this is a lie. He was a know black rights supporter. He was friends with many black singers and he refused to do shows that didnt allow black people on stage. He extensively hired black performers and promoted black businesses. You tighten up.

Being from Memphis, my family (mainly my grandparents) has had quite the history with Elvis. My grandfather installed all the telephones in Graceland when Elvis bought it and his personal nurse who cares for Elvis and even helped declare him dead was close friends with my parents and even held me the day I was born. So naturally this movie was really special to see and I love the approach Baz took with it. I especially love how it didn’t sugarcoat his career like most of the other Elvis biopics/documentaries out there

I saw this movie last weekend and oh my god I was absolutely blown away. The concert scenes are so mesmerizing and Austin butler does a fantastic job portraying Elvis and although he obviously doesn’t really look like Elvis there were some moments where he really did sound like him. And also, Tom hanks does a absolutely wonderful job portraying colonel Tom Parker and really made you despise him in some scenes. hats off to Baz Luhrmann and everybody else who helped to make this movie because honestly, this felt like a really good Biography. Although I do have some things that felt off such as rushing through Elvis’s earlier years of his career and also how they never brought up Elvis cheating on Priscilla, her finding out and confronting him, And also kinda rushing through his film career. But I also understand because I know that Baz has a certain way of directing. And this movie also has a very emotional ending to the point that I’ll admit, Me and everybody else were tearing up. (Also, the cinema was full of elderly couples and it was so wholesome to hear all of them [including me], cheering during Elvis’s concert’s.) But other than that, it was a very solid movie and I would give it a solid 8/10.

This film has got Oscar written all over it. It will win 3 Oscars minimum and be nominated for dozens of awards. This real story is making millions of new young fans!! Elvis was a YOUTH MOVEMENT more than anything. And that energy turned right into the civil rights movement and changed the world. Austin Butler will nab one of those Oscars for sure. This movie just made him a star.

It was absolutely wonderful. The actors did a great job. It’s surprising how so many of the issues of the time. Are unfortunately still relevant today. So I loved his message of inclusiveness and love. To the point I actually shed a tear. It was great 👍🏾

The whole ten year gap is just to show how much Elvis felt his films felt like work for him. He gave some pretty good performances earlier but as they said in the movie, the more time went on, the lazier and cheaper the scripts and movies got. In terms of Elvis’s life, it’s a pretty insignificant part of his life in terms of how his career went through a low point in between the highs like his rise to fame and from ‘68 onward.

As a big Elvis fan myself I absolutely loved this movie, it was everything I wanted it to be. I’ve seen a lot of documentaries about Elvis so i know when and where events take place in his life and Baz Luhrmann did an absolutely fantastic job in getting everything right. As for Tom Hanks, i agree with you that i just saw the Character but the thing bothering me is that he plays a Dutch character and I am from Holland and his accent is absolutely not a Dutch accent but that’s just a nitpick. I loved Austin Butler’s performance and him singing all the songs without really copying Elvis was great. I absolutely recommend this movie to everyone and so far it’s my favorite movie of the year and I don’t think it will be topped by anything

I love that they told the story from the Colonel’s perspective. I know you said we “missed some things,” but that’s the Elvis experience. Elvis was larger-than-life, so naturally he seemed more like a greek god than a human. Few people on Earth knew any intimate details of the real man. So, to me, getting a few inside details of Elvis while the rest was from a distance, was a brilliant choice. Great review, Sean!

The issue is during that 10-year time period of making films. Elvis barely had a break, and he was off on the next film again. The thing with Elvis is he barely had a personal life the only time when he had a true break was before he met Col Tom Parker and his time in the army. The film got that right.

This was a sensory overload of artistic talent. This really felt like as much an epic larger than life vision as Braveheart or Gone with the Wind, and that's a big compliment. Butler disappeared into Elvis while remaining fundamentally human. And frickin Tom Hanks took his Thing You Do role and made me hate him more than ever before. The framing device was a little off for me as well and Lord knows this was way too long. I haven't been this tired during a movie in years. A trip worth taking but man, did I feel every step. 7.5/10 Worth it.

My (African American) girlfriend and I went to go see this movie... it took some convincing, she thought Elvis was a huge part of cultural appropriation, a racist who stole songs and never gave credit, was just stealing black culture, etc. Then during the Comeback Special Scene, she looked at me and said, “I’m in love.” Literally made my day for her to see what I seen in this man, because Elvis made a huge impact on my life in so many ways. Being from Tennessee, my dad was a huge fan and used to play Elvis in the car so I grew up listening to him. By the last scene, my girlfriend and I were both in tears and she immediately added Elvis songs to her playlist. This movie changed the way so many people perceived Elvis, he had his faults- but at the end of the day... he was a charitable, humble family man who always acknowledged the culture that he was raised around and inspired by.

Have seen it twice now and I loved it. The acting was superb especially from Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. Austin really captured the essence of Elvis. There were some liberties taken with the story but that happens. The main storyline was captured and Austin did such a great job with the singing and dance moves as well as his loneliness. Loved it even though I was crying at the ending.

Baz knows how to have the audience emotional and physically feel what Elvis must have been experiencing what was the rollercoaster ride that was his life. The fake Tom Parker was a slimy snake 🐍 period. I know about the man and his gifts and flaws, his inspirations and unique cultural exposures growing up in a poor black community in MS and then his exploration of black culture in TN. Great review. Agree 100%. As I watched the movie it occurred to me that it was a superhero movie mashed up with a biopic mashed up with a music video. Thoroughly enjoyed it despite much creative license being taken with some key events. (Elvis did not fire the Colonel from the stage.) Highly recommend this movie, Elvis fan or not.

@@zoramathews What actually happened is a bit more complex. A maitre’d at the hotel, who Elvis liked, was fired for a number of reasons. During his closing show, Elvis berated the owner of the hotel for the firing. This infuriated Colonel Parker because he had just renegotiated Elvis’ contract. He and Elvis got in a shouting match backstage and Elvis fired him. Eventually, after Parker demanded millions in back payment, Elvis hired him back. Obviously, this scenario is not nearly as dramatic as what the movie portrayed.

Elvis is a stylishly made musical biopic that is not just a tribute to Elvis Presley, but a true celebration of Elvis Presley, his interesting life and of course his amazing music! This film honestly gave me one of the best cinema experiences I’ve ever been a part of… Like the man himself, Elvis delivers dazzling, crowd pleasing entertainment that provokes a wide range of emotions! It’s a feel good film and I was constantly smiling, laughing, singing along and I even found myself getting emotional during certain scenes too… It's been a long time since a film took a bit of my heart with it, but this one did. I had to sit there several minutes after it ended to collect myself. I have loved Elvis my whole life, and this film made me mourn him as if I was actually there… After watching this film, I remembered what made me appreciate and love Elvis Presley in the first place! Austin Butler’s performance as the King of Rock n Roll is sensational! It's impossible to take your eyes off of him… He truly BECOMES Elvis Presley with his mannerisms and movements! There honestly came a point where I completely forgot that I was watching an actor playing Elvis… Austin's performance is honestly Oscar worthy in my opinion, just like the rest of the film! Austin Butler gives a star making performance here and I’m excited to see his career as an actor EXPLODE after this! If he doesn’t at least get nominated for an Oscar, then there is something seriously wrong… Elvis is exactly what I would have hoped for from a film directed by Baz Luhrmann, which is an experience that no one else can provide: a big, loud, camp, dazzling and spectacular attack of sight and sound that feels like a theme park ride! This film will honestly get your blood pumping, your feet tapping and your whole body moving! From the opening scene until the credits roll, the film is a non-stop roller coaster of emotions…

I love it! Though I can totally see a number of the negatives you mention, some of them felt like they are both detractors but also could be attractors. I’ve already seen it 3 time in less then a week, but also I have been a mid grade fan of Elvis my whole life and accidentally ramped it up a lot before the movie came out also so that is definitely a factor. I felt, the movie was here, there, everywhere, and nowhere. It gave so much and yet so little. I left the theatre with mixed emotions and a feeling of emptiness. Her grandma is quite the elvis fan and she left the theatre crying, and loved it so that was quite cool to see her perspective as a fan. I read the book ‘Gladys and Elvis’ which is more about his Mum but it went into the whole back story of why Elvis dressed like he did even as a teenager. He loved that Captain Marvel Jnr character because he sort looked like Elvis who didn’t look like anyone else. So Elvis would copy Captain Marvel Jnr’s hairstyle as a teenager. That’s how Elvis ended up wearing all the sparkles and capes. He was just a dude into cosplay 🤣

I loved this movie! I personally think the fast pace and constant cuts were purposeful in conveying how non stop Elvis’s life was. This really bothered me at first but then when I took a look at how Elvis lived this crazy lifestyle and never had a break, it put into perspective how Baz wanted the audience to feel. He wanted us to feel tired and run down so we could relate to what Elvis was feeling at the end of his career. I also agree that Austin Butler did a phenomenal job as Elvis, but Tom Hanks often was distracting as his manager and it frequently took me out of the experience that was this film. Tom’s acting choices were weird and it was clear in every scene with Tom and Austin, that Austin ran circles around him. Maybe if they had a different actor who played the Colonel who matched the level that Austin brought to the table, the movie would have been so much better as a whole. Overall, I think Baz did a great job creating a beautiful tribute to Elvis and I am very curious to see more from him!

Excellent point about the pace of the film being intentional as a representation of his life. I thought Hanks performance was deliberate- I found the character throughly dislikeable. Austin was amazing…there were a few times when I had to stop myself to scrutinize was the image Austin or Elvis. Must see movie, loved it. Sad though at the end.

*Elvis* *(2022)* I just finished it watching it a *4th* time today along with Top Gun: Maverick. I saw Top Gun first this time unlike yesterday. They truly are masterpieces. Top Gun 2 is more of a happy tears ending. Elvis has the sadness tears. It's good to have both. There are several amazing scenes in the film with the perfect songs playing... - The first time you see Elvis perform in the Louisiana Hayride. The song, "That's All Right (Mama)". Then you see a young Elvis go into a tent 🎪 that had a gospel choir with "I'll Fly Away". This sets up the ending seeing Elvis fly to the sky. - The tension when he walks on stage. You hear utter silence and even confusion from the initial awkwardness. Someone yells, "Get a haircut, fairy." Then like a jolt of lightning hits Elvis and he becomes electrifying. The women went NUTS and you can feel like you're in the crowd next to these people. - When you see Big Mama Thornton sing, "Hound Dog", while Elvis is hanging out on Beale Street. I actually prefer her version better. - The actor who portrays Little Richard was electric while Elvis is hanging out with B.B. King. - The first time you see Priscilla inside a car. First off, there is this beautiful photo of Elvis and his father, Vernon, crying from Gladys' death. Elvis was a true mama's boy. It fades into the sky. What an amazing fadeout and transition to Germany in 1959 where 'Cilla is 14 and Elvis is 24. - Elvis first kissing Priscilla might be one of the loveliest moments I've seen in a film in years that surpasses many legendary romance / chick flicks. You hear Kacey Musgrave's cover version and it's perfect! - The montage of Elvis in movies while dancing around with his wife and relatives was pleasing. - How they handled the '68 Christmas Special with Dacre Montgomery was perfect. Balanced humor + drama all in those scenes like the whores and kung fu. It was intercut with the assassinations of Dr. King and RFK. Then Dacre says a speech that can still apply in today's world. The old Hollywood sign turning into Television with the NBC peacock was such a nice touch. - My favorite scene in the entire movie: Vegas rehearsal of "That's All Right (Mama)". It's on KZbin. Check it out. No scene is being shown but you can listen to it. This follows it up with "Suspicious Minds". It basically ends with Elvis kissing a bunch of female fans and Priscilla seeing it and feeling hurt by it. - Sharon Tate's photo in the newspaper. A reference to Austin Butler's role as Tex in Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood (2019) in which he's supposed to kill Sharon. - Elvis firing Colonel Tom Parker. That scene alone with Elvis ending it with a mic drop is enough of a reason to give Austin Butler an Oscar. Austin was bedridden for a week due to exhaustion. He really worked hard for this role. - The final scenes with Priscilla. First, by leaving him. Telling him she was more hurt by his drug usage and not the side women. Then inside the car. - Watching Elvis sing "Unchained Melody" is heartbreaking. I shedded a tear when you see a young Elvis just running and wanting to fly away. Then you see the real Elvis footage. It all goes back to the earlier scenes. Did it have flaws? For me, I think I was taken aback from it using hip hop songs. It wasn't that bothersome like hearing Tupac in Django Unchained but it didn't need it. Try to appeal to the young gen, I guess. And the real Colonel Parker didn't have an accent. Tom Hanks could've just spoke with an American accent. It did skim through Priscilla forcing Elvis to marry her. And her having an affair with Mike Stone, Elvis's karate teacher. But I didn't think it needed to show all that though. Obviously, some scenes were changed for more dramatic effect. I can understand some people hating Elvis because he did steal black music to gain wealth. Among his Memphis Mafia, you don't see black faces there. In some ways, he's the first rock star to have *white* *privilege.* Although many of the black folks on Beale Street seem to love him and treat him like their adopted white son. The man was handsome. Probably the most gorgeous and most charismatic superstar to ever live. I've read things like Elvis was a hack. Previous generations thought he had no real talent and didn't like his singing voice. Haters think he was gyrating white honky who got rich from black people music and made tons of white women have orgasms just watching him swing his pelvis. That's basically how I viewed him before this film. But I came to love his music and respect his legacy. I think 10-15 years ago, I don't think I would've listened to Elvis. Not in my 20s. But at 41, I seem to really love it. The movie made me discover how many Elvis songs I really enjoy and I enjoy a lot of them. Prior to this film, I saw most Elvis references from Uncle Jesse in Full House. The irony John Stamos was named Jesse which was Elvis's twin brother who died stillborn. And the other references came from Forrest Gump or Elvis impersonators. I had no interest in his music. I'm amazed by how many female extras were there to scream for Elvis. Hundreds of beautiful women. I can imagine many of them were born in the 1990s but they look so authentic dressed up with 50s/60s/70s wardrobe and hairstyle. Makes me wonder if they turned into Elvis fans after being part of this film? I know Olivia Dejonge (age 24) who portrayed Priscilla seems to adore it. Said it's one the greatest films she's ever seen and she's not saying it because she's part of it. I can't argue with her. It's a spectacle and honored Elvis in a big way. Elvis is my 2nd favorite film of 2022 behind only Top Gun: Maverick. It actually might be superior to Forrest Gump for me. That might sound blasphemous but Gump's story is fiction and the message is wrong. Luck shouldn't be what leads you to success. While Elvis was a real-life human being with the same insecurities as you and me. "I'm gonna be 40 soon and nobody's gonna remember me." A fascinating overview of a fine film. One thing, Elvis DID not steal black music to get rich. Fact. James Brown and Jackie Wilson are on record saying that all black male performers took from Elvis, not the other way around. Hendrix was a massive fan. The portrayals of Little Richard and Gladys were fantastic. Check out Peter Guralnick's definitive book on Elvis: "Last Train To Memphis". 10/10 Elvis hasn't been forgotten, the best tribute of all.

Sean I’m so glad you were able to see Elvis. I was hoping after I watched it that you would do a review of it because I was curious to see if you would like it. I saw it the Monday following it’s opening weekend and I was blown away. I couldn’t describe it better myself how you can tell that Baz put his distinct style into the film, and while I can see why some people might not like it, I thought it helped make the movie pop. I also agree with you on Tom Hanks’s performance. I thought he did a great job and it might be the performance that helps him win a third Oscar.

I was watching the trailor for this movie. My grandparents just passed away a few months ago. I can confirm that the scenes of him as a kid in church are true. (they were neighbors lol). We're all planning on seeing the movie. My family could stop talking about their stories of living down there. I agree with Lisa Marie, it's a real and accurate depiction of his upbringing.Almost everything (documentaries) I've seen most movies about him automatically skips over his tough childhood. DGray78.....Elvis appropriated nothing. He had many influences. Country, R&B, jazz, opera and the great quartets like JD Sumner and the Stamps who sang on stage with him until the end. Elvis picked up influences along his journey, all the while having his own soul and rhythm inside of him, as well as a charisma like I have never seen before. Those things can't be copied or bought. You are born with them.

You caught my thoughts exactly describing the roller coaster of style changes throughout, the movie frantically snaps between fantastical and typical biopic in a way that it almost hits Walk Hard levels then other times hits Rocketman levels. Austin Butler was amazing and I dug it but won't watch it again.

To be honest I was interested in seeing Elvis but not excited, because I was afraid it was going to be just another music biopic like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, but after seeing it I thought it was fantastic, and like Sean said I’m glad that they let a director with a distinct style showcase it in this film.

The entire movie felt like a caricature of Elvis rather than a biopic. You are absolutely right in saying that it is very distinctly a Baz Lurman movie but I don’t think that’s a good thing. Too much happening, more eye candy without substance. Tom Hanks was terrible in this…I couldn’t get over the fact that it was Tom Hanks doing a terrible accent with terrible prosthetics on. Austin Butler was the best part of this. Awesome performance. I would love to see the Elvis story told in a better format. Something that truly captures the human behind the myth, imperfections and all. C- at best.

There is a lot left out in this movie. We don’t see his brightest moment when he and Scotty and Bill created this whole new sound back in 1954. Such a significant part of the Elvis story. That is his musical essence. With his approach he blurred the lines between black and white music. Mixing it all together. What he did was very, very creative. The way he sang, nobody had ever song like that. His articulation, the energy that he puts in this strangely new music. All of this, the whole proces of it, is left out in this movie and that is really a missed chance. Because Elvis’ greatest contribution and defining moment aren’t the reactions he got from his audience nor the unheard record sales or merchandize madness. Elvis’ greatest moment is when he picked up his guitar at Sun Studios after a long hot July day and without any progress made start to bang the thing while bursting out in (very awkward) Arthur Crudup’s “That’s Allright Little Momma”. From there on nothing would be the same ever again. But with that been said. The movie brings back Elvis for new audiences to explore. And KZbin will provide all that’s needed to do so.

That's the theme of the movie, Elvis as a super hero. Baz was having a fever dream about Elvis. There are ALOT of inaccuracies in the movie, for no good reason. Elvis' story was amazing enough as it was, it didn't need to be embellished. I didn't like the movie the first time seeing it, but now have seen it 10 times in the theater. It needs to be seen in theaters, not on streaming. Elvis wasn't a depressed person, he enjoyed being Elvis. It's sad that Elvis' humor and generosity wasn't protrayed. It basically shows the business side of Elvis, not the humanity of Elvis. For older Elvis fans, we understood all of those moments.

I love this movie, I've seen it many, many times. Austin Butler just nails it all the way. I really would love to see him get awards for his Fantastic and Amazing portrayal of The One And Only Elvis Presley. I agree that the movie skips around and missed some great things, but that's why Baz Lurhmann may release his 4 hour version of the film, sometime in the future. I really love your review and honesty, thank you for that. Did you remember seeing the real Elvis at the end singing Unchained Melody, if not you will have to see it again. I rate this a A+ specifically for Austin Butler and the devotion and hard work he did to nail this role. Austin also did his own singing for the 50s part, not an impersonation, than Elvis's voice and Austin's were blended for the 60's and on. Thanks for Sharing this and your time. I recommend everyone to see this film on the big screen. Elvis will never be forgotten, he lives on, he will continue to be loved by millions and millions forever and ever. Take Care and God Bless.

I have yet to hear or see a better review of "Elvis" than yours. When you tell us about the failings of the film, it is right on the money. And when you tells us about the art that springs from the screen, you nail it. The best scene is when Hanks tells Butler he may not continue to be his manager. Butler's "MMMM" ( twice), was apparently off the script, and Luhrmann let it stay. Then, the noise Butler's mouth makes, immediately after, as he turns his head is as close to art, as I have ever seen from what is actually a mute moment. You may not know this, but Luhrmann's making Butler sing "If I can dream", while lying on the floor was his way of interpreting what the director of the TV special, Steve Binder told him, .that the master take for the single, not for the album, or the special itself, but for the single, was taken directly from Presley's recording of the song, alone in a huge studio, in a fetal position while listening to the pre recorded track. I loved the movie. I hadn't really thought of Elvis in decades, beyond the idea of the kitsch behind the impersonators. I kind of like Tom Hanks as the Colonel, but he reminded me the main baddie from Lethal Weapon 2, the South African consul-general Arjen Rudd. Austin Butler was great. His captured Elvis without putting on a tacky impersonation. It's as though Elvis possessed him at times. I was particular moved towards the final 40 minutes with the struggles and decline. When he sings Unchained Melody, it struck me that this was it for the King and I'm glad that his final performance was that iconic.

I enjoyed this film. I knew it would be long so I made sure that I watched it at a good time. I didn’t know much about the life of Elvis before I watched this film. I mostly just remember him being referenced a lot in tv series and movies. I also saw an Elvis impersonator at the state fair once. I’m a bit familiar with his songs. I admit I watched this when I heard Tom Hanks would be in it and I always enjoy movies with him. Overall a good film but a bit depressing and exhausting,
