His voice improves with age. Probably picking up that particular guitar brought out that timbre. What a gem of a moment! :-)

What a magic moment on TV. Elvis Costello playing an absolute beautiful song Alison on Elvis Presley's guitar dating from '56, customised in '60 used in Wild in the Country publicity photos, brought out again for his '69 Las Vegas show and subsequent concerts and now in the hands of another legend Elvis Costello.

This, to me, was quite emotional, how Elvis Costello had his name changed for performing reasons. When you see or hear the name you think of one person. Yet, here he is playing Elvis' guitar he bought in Oct. '56 and had customised in '61 and used in various concerts from '69. Probably the biggest and most influential performer of all time who has come and gone with such a legacy of material, influencing stars all over the world and now after his guitar is being played by Elvis Costello in front of Elvis' only wife with a sad an emotional song. If this guitar could talk....

Wow. Who'd have thought all those years ago in 1977, that the geeky man from punk/new wave who was partly responsible for ushering out the old guard with the rest, would be sitting on a couch next to Elvis' wife and playing his guitar. They skirted around it, but the name Elvis wasn't exactly chosen as a tribute to the king, but more of a statement. But nonetheless it was still great to see this kinda come full circle.
@soulman5665
@soulman5665 8 жыл бұрын
+inshreds66 Interesting observation... referencing what E.C. represented and at that time in '77 and then it coming a bit full circle here. That ushering out the old guard has turned out to be an odd thing... now that is ... being able to look back a few things. Many things actually. I mean EP was considered not really relevant when he died, many people (as fickle as music fans can be... and even derisive & divisive) had forgotten him being the figurehead of a revolution that many artists/future legends like John Lennon and Dylan cited over and over as almost flashpoints in their lives that changed everything for them. Hendrix too. Some of my fellow Hendrix fans embarrass me when they play stupid about E.P. but Jimi's family has, in 3 separate documentaries, stated Elvis P. was the initial spark, and it was an intense one that he always carried with him. Right till the very end of Jimi's life he followed E.P. He told Journalist Sharon Lawrence one of his favorite Albums was Elvis' new (then at that time new) 1969 'From Elvis in Memphis' album. Then less than 10 years later he's dead.... and reduced to "just that guy in a jumpsuit" and by time the 80's rolled around he was remembered (outside of his basic fanbase) as a copy cat, racist that really wasn't that significant. In that same time-frame Elvis Costello had picked up (in E.P.'s namesake... but as you pointed out, not necessarily representative of it.) and was off doing his thing. At the time of E.P.s death and Costellos emergence I'm reminded of the incident of the night E.P. died on Aug 16th 1977 and in a poplar Punk Rock club in England that same night was a packed crowd of the new Punk Rock movement. The announcement went up over PA that E.P. had just died and a cheer went up from the crowd as if they were all told the war was over and their loved ones were coming home. Popular Dj Danny Baker was there and jumped on table or chair and berated the entire crowd... basically reminding them all from whence they came and Presley's death was nothing to be cheering about. There was a naivety there that night (and still exists to some degree) representative of basically "who cares about the past, our music is all that matters". But that crowd was silent. Many that were present said could have heard a pin drop and hit a pillow. They were silent because they knew their beloved Danny Baker was correct to put them in check. He was the equivalent to a conscience.... that they hadn't yet developed or a respect that they needed to have. (pardon me for the ramble, I'm just thinking while I type... ignore whatever you wish... or read and enjoy it) That very attitude that night in the Punk Rock club was part of that changing of the guard. That's why I said at the beginning it was a bit of an odd thing. People, especially now with the internet making research much easier and faster, more people and music historians are looking back at Presley's impact more seriously and focusing not on other modern writers interpretations of that era (which is often so incorrect it borders on slander) but their focusing more on what Dylan, Lennon, BB King, James Brown, Etta James, Little Richard, Jackie Wilson, and many others had to say about Presley's value... including (in many of their old interviews) down right defending Elvis P's name... against such claims as "racist" and many others. Poor dude was about as open minded a white man as there was in the '50s, yet many in our screwy music culture turned him into a racist, no talent, thief somehow. But the blues, r&b folks that knew him have squashed that non-sense. And they were right to do that. Presley was the lightening rod for bigoted hate from mainstream white America for the first 2 years he was on the scene, and he deserves better. Those bluesmen like Little Milton that defended him were aware of the twisted, bastardized image of E.P. that society ran with for decades, and the REAL story got lost. Costello, meanwhile, has been alive in the years since Presley's absence and the world has been able to see what he can do and he's made his own impact. But it's nice to see it all come full circle as you said. By the way, I really enjoyed Costello's informal performance here. E.P. was always championing other artists and respected many different genres, I'm sure he would have appreciated Costello's gentle, yet respectful, playing and singing. Alison sounded great!

Paul macartney said he was the nearest thing to writing with John Lennon, 2 albums with Burt Bacharach to name a few.. As for being a talk show host I think your find that was recorded over 10 years with only musical legends and Costello was chose to host because of his vast knowledge of music. All Presley would good enough for would be x factor🤣🤣

In Ontario where I reside it is observed as a holiday, but not a STATUTORY one. It means you don't get it off with pay. However, it is a holiday, as it is in the UK. We do honour our fallen soldiers, and it is an act of moral duty.

As Helen Mirren, a NATURALLY still-beautiful(with wrinkles) 75-ish year old says 'A concert-pianist won't deliberately break their fingers. No-one worthy of being called an actor will have Botox, will paralyse their face. It's the tool of their trade.'
@violao206
@violao206 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidtate8273 What a great quote from Helen and I could not agree more. I am on board with that as I know Botox is so damn mainstream now that younger and younger woman are poisoning their faces, and it is not an inexpensive regimen to keep up. Priscilla looks not only Botoxed but also deformed from plastic surgery which is why her lips have that weird cat-woman-like pursing on her cheeks. There are also probably collagen injections happening here too. I have great empathy for women that feel the pressure to do it, but rarely are the results very satisfactory compared to natural skin that is unmolested. Anecdotally speaking, I had read that survey determined that generally, people thought that plastic surgery shaved typically only 3-years off perceived age. That is a small pay-off with generally dodgy results that look unnatural. My advice is for women to go natural. It is much more appealing. Poor Priscilla looks like an old-aged rubber doll.
