jose cooli absolutely! Even though those were well written songs they were popular for the time. Elvis never needed to sing them but when he did he owned them. Case in point, The Righteous Brothers “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.” The original is one of the all time greatest .. but Elvis slows the tempo until the epic chorus.. and makes it his own. @paullangton-rogers23905 жыл бұрын
Yeah true, but also I think this comes down to how Elvis being a Southern American would naturally phrase that, and it would be different to British English. 'I must've done something wrong' sounds more American, than 'I did something wrong', probably he knew the song in his head, but unconsciously just sang it how he would in his normal Southern American speaking style.
@teleblaster615 жыл бұрын
Oh good grief...it was a freaking joke...no deeper than that... no more, no less. Nothing to do with interpretation or style. Other examples of the same kind can be heard in unreleased session tapes, rehearsals, and live performances throughout his entire career. Just Elvis being silly. For example: After kissing a girl at the front of the stage during 'Love Me Tender' he would change the line from " you have made my dreams come true"... to ..."you have made my nose turn blue"...just having a laugh. John Lennon was notorious for doing things like that. Fact is...if anybody changed the lyric like Paul describes here, it was Frank Sinatra, not Elvis. Paul has told this story on several occasions, even recently, and it's become part of his schtick....it's showbiz folks...nothing to wax philosophical about.
@teleblaster615 жыл бұрын
And by the way...I'm Southern, and it is totally natural for a Southerner to say "I did something wrong". Not all Southerners have the same accent or dialect. Same with Northerners or the British.
@paullangton-rogers23905 жыл бұрын
@@teleblaster61 Calm down calm down, people are entitled to express views and discuss it, to some it's an interesting point because of the cultural difference. It's pretty obvious it was a humorous comment by Paul and no criticism of Elvis was intended. The point we're discussing is whether Elvis got the lyrics wrong or simply changed them and many seem to agree he simply changed them. Even Paul got them wrong himself! And yes, many American Southern States (especially around where Elvis lived) I have heard definitely have distinctive ways of saying things, very different to the North. Much the same in England but reverse, Northerners have a distinctive style with common words phrases and ways of speaking we in the Midlands and South never use, and it does cross dialects and regions, much like in US Southern States.

Elvis never tried to do a serious version of 'Hey Jude.' The one he did was a loose jam, and he was going by the only lyrics he could think of. He never sanctioned it's release on record, RCA put it out several years later when they were trying to scrape up anything they could. His live version of 'Yesterday' on an official live album, he got every word perfectly.

Mostly he didn't record other people's songs without insisting on receiving 50% of the royalties.. This was how he could live such a lavish lifestyle and just go out and buy his dozen or so memphis mafia guys new caddillacs, Harley Davidsons horses and often home's.. Dolly Parton said in an interview how elvis wanted to cover one of her song's but because she refused to give up 50% of the royalties she decided against it, Whitney houston later covered it and dolly made close to a million bucks out of Whitney houstons version.. Hence a high percentage of song's he recorded he also earned song writing royalties on, in some cases it worked out well for both songwriter and singer, because the songwriter might have had difficulties getting anyone to record their song, so it was worth giving up half the rights to the song. You need to look at things objectively, for example the merchandising, posters, badges, guitars, toys etc were all tom parkers idea, yet Elvis also got a 50% cut of these, so it was a perfect partnership to riches beyond either of their wildest dream's. Elvis worked hard up until late 1956, all the tv, radio shows and performances to establish himself, but from that point onwards it was a case of doing what earned him money the quickest, eg movies made in 6 weeks, huge paycheck plus a cut of the movie profits, rarely doing any interviews except for promoting latest movie. The movies made that didn't have many songs didn't do as well at the box office as those with more song's, so they stuck with multi song movies, it's what the fans wanted. This allowed him to only have to work 3 or 4 months of the year. Then onto Vegas residency which meant no touring, playing in the same venue for a month and having 2 months off, it paid well and suited him. Prior to his death he'd not worked in 6 week's, his was a case of too much leisure time and too much money. Elvis was known to spend upto 2 weeks at a time in his home hardly venturing any further than his gardens, often spending several days at a time not leaving his own bedroom.. That was when he was in his mid 30s onwards, having food brought upto his room. Don't forget he had a cook, groundsmen etc, so wasn't at home cooking or doing DIY, it was a man in his mid 30s sat at home being waited on by his staff..

I agree, many artists who cover a song will improvise a little or change the lyrics very slightly to suit their own style and that often works better for that artist. And you have to factor in also the differences between American English and British English. I think Elvis just adopted American English and how they speak in the South especially, it sounded more natural to him probably.
@teleblaster615 жыл бұрын
It was just a joke, and had nothing to do with language, or getting it wrong. Had nothing to do with American english vs British english, or being from the South. He said it for a laugh during the song one night in Vegas back in 1969. The official release of the Elvis version that came out at that time was from a different show, and the lyric was sang correctly. The version with the 'stud' comment has been floating around on bootlegs for years, and only recently has been officially released as part of a collectors set of those first Vegas shows. Paul knows this, and has told this story in some of his recent interviews...he's just having a laugh...just like Elvis was.

@@athenaminerva8954 My guess, that what he was referring to was not Elvis' physical death, but musically. When Elvis got out of the Army, he was busy making movies. The songs that he was recording didn't always have that raw energy, of his earlier music. However, the way I look at it, Elvis was evolving as an artist. He went on to prove, that he could sing anything. Most artists, who have been performing, for any length of time go through this. If you look at Paul McCartney, he evolved as an artist as well.

Strange how Paul always find a way to put Elvis down when he talks about him.- Anyway When Elvis did the song to a live audience he said, _I said something wrong_ The only time he said, "must" have said something wrong, was when he was doing a rehearsal of the song with the band. But he did stuff like that with others songs too as just being playful while rehearsing with the band.

In the official master of Elvis’ version of Yesterday from the album ‘On Stage-February 1970’ ,Elvis sings the lyrics correctly so it appears it’s Sir Paul who’s got it wrong? Maybe he listened to a rehearsal version where sometimes Elvis mucked around with lyrics? Also Elvis was certainly not ‘flakey’ in 1969/ 1970!

Both Hey Jude and Yesterday (less so) were throw away attempts by Elvis. Hey Jude, especially, was never supposed to be released. The live version was just a snippet at the end of Yesterday. Probably why he stopped singing them by 1970.

Search Elvis's Yesterday and listen to his live renditions. He sings the correct words. There is rehearsal footage of Elvis singing it, and he's not trying too hard, and he sings the incorrect words. Why does McCartney cite that one? He never seems to have a good thing to say about Elvis, post army.

Antony W Shaw because Elvis wasn’t exactly nice to them. He tried to have them banned from America using his CIA contacts. It's a song about guilt. Many people feel like something was their fault even if it is unclear to them. The experience Paul is probably emotionally referencing is the death of his mother (he didn't especially get dumped or feel heartbreak in relationships at that time). He was never told that she was seriously ill and her death was kept from him for a while. It was only 10 years later he was told she had cancer and not until 30-40 years later he was told the fuller story. When you are a child and your parent dies or leaves you it is extremely common for the child to assume they were to blame, even if it's logically untrue, . This is why kids can get so messed up by death or abandonment by a parent. Paul didn't take his mother's death well, reacting unemotionally and internalising his grief, he distanced himself from others and distracted himself with music to deal with the depression.
