My all time favorite Elvis tune! Saw him with Talk Talk in 1981. Every time I hear this song I want to POGO! At 50 years old it's not that easy !

I remember visiting our grandmother at her retirement home and had a room of our own. Later that night, when everyone had gone to bed, we discovered they had a decent stereo system. We put in a tape featuring songs of the day like "Rock Lobster" and this tune "Pump it Up". By the end of the night, the empty chairs (set up if front of the stereo for people to enjoy "super-oldies" like Beny Goodman) were filled up with older people enjoying great early 80's music. Surreal experience to be sure.

When a song was written before you were born and you are able to get up and jive and sing along......Well, I guess that tells you that it is a pretty fuckin epic and timeless song.
@JudeJaded1510 жыл бұрын
This song comes from a decidedly male POV, but I guess the music is feel good for all genders.

JudeJaded15 A song from the male POV? OMG someone call the PC po-lice. Arrest that Costello troublemaker.
@KaiserSchuldig9 жыл бұрын
JudeJaded15 What the fuck does this even mean? Why do things have to match your point of view to maximize your enjoyment? That's so close minded and shitty. You've actually ruined my day a bit with this comment. Fuck you.

Just looked at this video one more time. Costello and the boys really were special. They came on during the tail end of the anger and disenfranchised punk movement, and turned it into something hip, intelligent with catchy with upbeat tempos and a whole new geeky cool style. One thing is for sure, Costello is a master lyricist and songwriter, but the Attractions were an AMAZING band that made Elvis music come to life: amazing bass and drum, and Stevie Nieve on Keys added a stroke of genius to every Elvis song. I strongly believe that this music would still turn heads today even if it were just being released for the first time today!
@heartofthewindycity50669 жыл бұрын
Lived through it. In the video The Attractions play the wrong instruments; The drummer "plays" the keys, the bassist "plays" the drums and Steve Naieve "plays" the bass. Seen live in concert in Wellington, 1979 or 1980
@LIZZIE-lizzie9 жыл бұрын
I disagree with the punk movement 'analysis'. I live where that pic on the left wz taken. right across the Hudson River from New York Citys' West Side; meat packing district. bands portrayed anger, like Idols' sneer. Idol is a geek. The 'geek' thing NEVER happened! 'Geek' is NEVER happening! prob more geek lookin' people w/Neil Young...LMfAO Maybe those things happened, other places, but not here. ANY way after The Sex Pistols, "punk" wz over.

I got stage front in the pogo pit when I saw this band live in '78 and stood right at Elvis' feet. I remember he looked about 4 foot six, small and skinny, but what a voice and what a band. The support acts, Richard Hell and the Voidoids and John Cooper Clarke were bloody good too. Great days.

"Pump It Up" I've been on tenterhooks ending in dirty looks, list'ning to the Muzak, thinking 'bout this 'n' that. She said that's that. I don't wanna chitter-chat. Turn it down a little bit or turn it down flat. Pump it up when you don't really need it. Pump it up until you can feel it. Down in the pleasure centre, hell bent or heaven sent, listen to the propaganda, listen to the latest slander. There's nothing underhand that she wouldn't understand. Pump it up until you can feel it. Pump it up when you don't really need it. She's been a bad girl. She's like a chemical. Though you try to stop it, she's like a narcotic. You wanna torture her. You wanna talk to her. All the things you bought for her, putting up your temp'rature. Pump it up until you can feel it. Pump it up when you don't really need it. Out in the fashion show, down in the bargain bin, you put your passion out under the pressure pin. Fall into submission, hit-and-run transmission. No use wishing now for any other sin. Pump it up until you can feel it. Pump it up when you don't really need it.
