I parked behind Sun Studio too when I went there, so the first thing I saw was the back of it and the back door! I absolutely loved being there and doing the tour. Very cool to see that photo with Taylor's Good Food!!

I always appreciate how you show us the graves of these people. They deserve to be recognized and remembered. I have seen a video on KZbin where Mary is talking about Elvis and she is at the house he bought for her. She loved him very much and you could see the sadness she felt because of his death. She said that he called her "May-Wee", I thought that was so cute! Also, thanks for the great info about Memphis Recording Service/Sun Studio. Very cool!! Thank you Billy!

the memphis recording studio is a place ive visited many times personally and the feeling you get when doing the tour is just one of the best feelings, all the music history in the place makes your hair on your neck stand up, memphis was rocking in late 80s but now its not so good shame really. some locals told me years ago that the city never recovered from martin luther king being killed there.

This is going to be interesting, looking forward to learn more about the Toof family. I recently read in Nancy Rooks book, Inside Graceland. When Elvis bought Graceland it was pretty much an abandoned building that needed a lot of work. And the church next door used the house to store canned goods, and hold other meetings. And one of the rooms upstairs over the door way had a painted Boys and Girls club sign on it.

Mary was very protective of Elvis. If you see interviews with her there’s one on Geraldo where the step mom accuses Elvis of having an inappropriate relationship with his mother and Mary wasn’t having it. Mary laid into the step mom for making those allegations. You can find the video on KZbin. Another great video SpaGuy!

Where was the original Sun Studio, or did it actually exist as a building? I know that when I lived in Memphis, that building did not have the guitar and the Sun logo. I drove up and down Union Avenue for years. This boulevard had reversible traffic lanes in the 1960s until at least the 80s or longer. It was normally three lanes each way but from 7-9 AM weekdays it was 4 west and 2 east, and 4-6 PM it was 4 east and 2 west. There was a 10 minute period that traffic was not allowed in the reversible lanes prior to the switch. It was best to avoid this street near the transition time.

I’ve never been to Memphis, and I wouldn’t want to anger anyone who live there, but on these videos it comes across as quite a bleak city. The environment looks like urban sprawl, almost entirely asphalt. Big wide featureless highways, barely any green spaces. Memphis is actually considered to be one of the most undesirable cities to live in America. It’s a reminder that the greatest singer that ever lived came from a bleak industrial city. Once again, I’m just describing what I’ve seen on Billy’s superb videos, but my visual senses are telling me Memphis lacks glamor.
@hayesman765 жыл бұрын
tony Falla I visited Memphis and Graceland in 1984. Memphis has always been a gritty working-class town. However, and very sadly, it’s now a VERY high-crime city, probably one of the worst in the nation. Memphis is on the New Madrid Fault, which produced the strongest recorded earthquake in U.S. history, so powerful that it made the Mississippi River change direction. I have tried to get the word out to Graceland officials that it seriously needs to come up with a plan to defend the mansion from feral looters in the event of an earthquake that partially or completely destroyed it. I’ve personally lived through two major riots/looting events, one in my native New York City (1977 blackout) and Los Angeles 1991. I do NOT want to see swarms of ghetto looters stealing Graceland’s treasures blind if, God forbid, the city was hit by another major quake. My STRONG advice is to organize a “posse” of local Elvis-loving ARMED good ole boys to defend the mansion the way Korean businessmen in L.A. defended their stores during the LA Riots. If anyone reading this has connections among the Graceland Estate’s higher-ups I’d be much obliged if they’d pass along my concerns and suggestion to them. Thanks.
@ubiq63485 жыл бұрын
Hayesman In the unlikely scenario of an earthquake, the national guard would be deployed to protect Graceland; so there’d be no need for armed vigilantes to form posses.
@hayesman765 жыл бұрын
tony Falla What makes you think an earthquake would be “unlikely”? As for deployment of the National Guard, you’re not considering the behind-the-scenes political and racial realities that might lessen the likelihood of them being assigned to protect Graceland. The fact is that Memphis is now majority black. Depending on who’s in the mayor’s and governor’s offices calling the shots I can definitely imagine the Guard to be told to STAND DOWN by black politicians who, like many blacks, not only don’t give a damn about Elvis Presley but who are actually antagonist towards him for various reasons which I won’t go into.
@hayesman765 жыл бұрын
The U.S. Geological Survey puts the likelihood of a major quake on the fault at 40%-60%. That’s hardly “unlikely”.
@ubiq63485 жыл бұрын
hayesman76 Yes, I’m aware a lot of black folks are antagonistic towards Elvis. False rumours have grown up about him being racist and some have even accused him of what’s called ‘cultural appropriation’ which infers he stole their music. But only the uneducated and ignorant ones perpetrate lies about the king. I find it sad in a way, given their history; you’d expect better from people who have been discriminated against than to discriminate against others themselves. All the evidence of Elvis’ racial harmony is there to see in his admiration for great black artists like Fats Domino and Ray Hamilton and BB King, but to name three, who had nothing but good things to say about Elvis. And it’s their opinion which counts, people who interacted with him and knew him, not the ones who spread false myths.

I wonder what year it was built and what it was built as originally...who's owned if over the years, various business before and after Sam that were in there, what was there before the present building...why Sam picked that particular building, etc...I've never heard any of that stuff..

I’ve just recently discovered your videos, and have been going back to watch the older ones. You had been laughing hard when you referred to he child as “baby Toof. Then as I was recovering from that one, you explained that Mary Jenkins’ was “in the dead center” of that section as if people in other sections weren’t dead.😂 (No disrespect intended just amused at the choice of words.)
