Please Read:
The quality varies because the video is made up of multiple clips. I have tried to edit in the best quality video where possible. I have synced in a new audio track, it is much better than whats on the original video. The hiss and crackle sound has been reduced quite significantly throughout the majority of the video except the end.
This performance has been included on many Elvis Dvds, However its presentation on a few is quite poor. The worst I have seen is from the film "This Is Elvis". The performance is cut short, truncated, interrupted by Johnny Harra [Elvis impersonator], extra "ows and ahs" from the audience are added. Also the bottom half of his legs are cut off, so we don't get to see properly his now famous leg shuffle [2:04m]. Whats the point of including footage in a documentary if it isn't presented in its true and raw form?.
Also sometimes like on the TV special "Elvis: Greatest Hits - Centre Stage" the first verse is edited out and begins at [0:39 m] and again the performance is interrupted this time by George Klein.
Some ask what was the controversy all about?
Well, this performance was pretty run of the mill until Elvis slows the song down [1:39m] and makes a suggestive motion with the microphone stand & then walks with a sort of drunken stance then turns towards the audience & thrusts his body to them. At the time this was deemed too sexually suggestive for a family show.

-In my opinion his performance here of Hound Dog was the most important milestone of his career, because it made him a star. The day after this show aired his name started to headline the front pages of newspapers across the nation and even though most of the publicity was negative, the offers kept coming in and he soon at only 21 years of age was a millionaire and the King of Rock n Roll.

There is an interview with Milton Berle somewhere on youtube where he said he had Elvis on and he really liked him and thought he was a sweet boy with a lot of talent. He said that week after this aired he got 500,000 pan letters(hate letters) saying how much they hated Elvis and how dare Milton have that kind of person on his show. Milton said immediately he knew Elvis was going to go far and that they had a star on their hands. Milton said if someone can get that many letters good or bad there had to be something there. I love that Milton believed in Elvis and treated him so affectionately :)

Cherie Wolfe Even though Elvis did have all of those PAN letters he gained much respect from many people around the country when he went into the Army serving his country. Elvis was a God fearing man who was patriotic he loved America and even as much as his mother Gladys was heartbroken Elvis fulfilled his duty. He could have gotten out of serving or even postponing his service but chose to go on with it. It served him well as when he returned from Germany and discharged Elvis was more loved than ever by fans all over the world. I absolutely admire him for the person he was, truly larger than life.

As a millennial, I never really understood why Elvis became so huge until I came back and watched these early videos. You really have to put it into context with what was popular at the time - doo-wop, pop, etc (just go listen to "top songs of 1955/1956" to see how family friendly the mainstream music scene was before Elvis came along). Putting myself in the shoes of a teenage girl from the 1950s, I can definitely see the appeal of Elvis beyond his good looks and talent. His personality really shines through, even on a low-definition black-and-white TV. He's dangerous but cute...shy but still playing with the crowd, and sexy and confident when he's singing. Even when the crowd is laughing, he's laughing along with them but he doesn't stop dancing. And the hip-shaking... obviously it seems tame nowadays, but if we could see this in HD, I'm sure we'd see some non-PG stuff going on with those pants. Even though everyone's grandma loves Elvis nowadays, I'm sure grandmas hated him back then. And one last thought - the dancing. It's so fluid and in-the-moment. Not rehearsed. It looks almost impossible to do but so easy for him. And every time he gets onto his toes, I automatically think "Michael Jackson". I've never thought about it until now, but Elvis obviously came first. Does that mean the King influenced the Prince of Pop's moonwalk? It's interesting that it's always noted that Elvis' material was heavily influenced by black artists, but MJ's dancing is obviously influenced by Elvis'. It's the cycle of creativity - artists are always being influenced and inspired by each other. It's a beautiful thing. (That was long. Thanks for coming to my TED talk)

This was the performance that REALLY got Elvis going. Also, Elvis alternated between dying his hair and keeping it natural for the first couple of years. Thats why he has the lighter colored hair often throughout 56, such as on the first Sullivan appearance. He has it dyed black here, 3 months prior to that. Beginning with his 2nd Sullivan appearance, Elvis would keep his hair dyed black for the rest of his life, with the exception of his army stay. His return press conferance in 1960 is basically the last time we see him with his natural hair.

I saw Milton Berle perform at Westbury Music Hall in March 1977 - he far exceeded expectations - he was absolutely hysterical - his act was great - i laughed so hard and to this day it was one of the all time funniest shows i have ever seen by a comedian and i have seen a lot of the greats of comedy -- RIP Milton and Elvis

Incredible - 42 years an Elvis fan and I have never seen (only heard) a great deal of this footage. Elvis’ facial expressions as he delivers his lines to Milty are priceless. He was a hilarious guy, a comic genius. I never realised that all that noise was Debra Paget accosting Elvis - he must have loved that; he was nuts about her. And the kid doing his Elvis impersonation - that was new to me. The things that Berle tells him; you can’t sing, you can’t dance.. are eerily similar to what the popular press were saying about Elvis at the time. It’s great that Milton Berle was such a supporter at this critical early stage. Many of the professional old guard knew he had giant talent and giant potential. Tommy Dorsey told his band, when they rehearsed with Elvis; like it or not, this is the future of music. So good that Austin Butler takes off the King so brilliantly in the new movie. Congratulations to everyone involved in that one of a kind extravaganza.

Check out the Milton Berle episode where they're outside on a ship with the US Navy. Also the Steve Allen show where Elvis is a cowboy, along with Imogene Coca and Andy Griffith. Each of them were so good and the writing was genius. Absolutely hysterical!

It’s a pity these are so badly mastered and not on blu-ray. It’s a missed opportunity that all the TV performances have not been drawn together in one intelligent package. SNL Debuted in 1975. By that time Elvis was a terribly bloated, slow, sad shadow of himself. It would have been a disaster for him to go on. I doubt Lorne Michaels would have even allowed it. This is a good opportunity to see why Michael Jackson was so inspired by Elvis. Not just his music but the way he dressed, the way he performed, the dancing, the way he moved. Elvis and MJ had very similar influences. Jackie Wilson and Elvis went to each others gigs and traded dance moves. They were lifelong friends. Same with James Brown. Elvis sung gospel and hung out with James Brown. Brown was family to the Presley's. MJ was heavily inspired by all three: ELVIS, BROWN & WILSON. Without these three, I don't believe there would have been an MJ solo act. RIP MJ and Elvis. Two very misunderstood legends and human beings...

6/5/56, NBC Hollywood. Berle's last episode of a show he had hosted since June 1948. Presley had appeared on Berle's show in April 1956, broadcast from the deck of the USS Hancock at San Diego, CA. Both shows were originally broadcast in color, however only black and white kinescope recordings remain. The April show had been thought to be lost before turning up in the early 1980's via various home videotape sellers. While Presley's first TV appearances were six consecutive weeks on CBS's "Stage Show" from January to March of 1956, the appearance here still stands as the iconic image most people have of 1950's Presley. He would go on to appear only 3 more times on TV during the fifties. Once on the "Steve Allen Show" and then two appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" ( Toast of the Town). The day after this appearance, "Hound Dog" was recorded at Radio Recorders, 6/6/56 in 36 takes. The arrangement heard here and subsequently recorded was a cover of an arrangement by Freddy Bell and the Bellboys heard by Presley during his engagement at the " New Frontier" Hotel in Las Vegas during May 1956. The song had been originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton in 1954. As written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, it was a woman's lament over a wayward lover. Presley (and Bell before him) would "flip the script" of the narrative. Presley actually thought little of the song, but had already performed it in live shows prior to 6/5/56 to good audience response. From that point on, up to his last live show in 1961, it was the show closer. On returning to the live stage in 1969, until his last show in 1977, Hound Dog" was a set staple. The lead breaks in the original recording of " Hound Dog" is considered by some Rock music historians to be the first "Psychedelic guitar " lead breaks ever recorded.
