Elvis laid down this track on March 29, 1972 for RCA at their Hollywood studios, for release as the B-side of Red West`s song "Separate Ways" later that year, in the immediate aftermath of his separation from Priscilla.
Written by Mark James, Johnny Christopher and Wayne Carson Thompson, "Always On My Mind" was first recorded by Brenda Lee in 1971 in a version that was released before Elvis.

The song appeared on Elvis album Separate Ways. The song served as the title track for the eponymous 1985 memorial album, and can be found also on Artist Of The Century, Burning Love, The Country Side Of Elvis, Elvis By The Presleys, Elvis Country, Elvis 2nd to None, The Essential Elvis Presley, Great Country Songs, The Great Performances, Walk A Mile In My Shoes, Hitstory, and Love Elvis.
