I still remember listening to my Mom's old "secretly recorded" show from Tampa in 1971 where he made his Tutt / Scheff joke :) - I wish I had digitally captured that before the tape just fell apart. Was just a purse sized recorder but the audience screams and slighly muffled music and awesome voice really did capture the moment so much more than professionally recorded shows did.

A few bits of misinformstion here, but still cool. All geek stuff and I am that. Sabian cymbals came out in 1982, so of course he was a Zildjian guy or Paiste guy if he messed with them. Remo never made silver dot heads, but invented the CS Black dots. Ludwig made the Silver Dot heads. Remo never made an oil filled head. Evan's did. The appearance of oil between plys on Remo Pinstripe or Emperor heads is a light bending phenomenon called Newton's rings. No oil in them. The wood drums. Ludwig did not make all maple drums, though they did use an inner face ply of maple in the 70s. They had changed their shells from the 3 ply poplar, mohogany, poplar with reinforcement rings to the "hardwood" shells with multiple plys and face ply of maple in the early 70s. All maple came decades later. Even in 1985, when I met Bill Ludwig I I I he corrected me on the maple myth. The blue sparkle kit was from the 60s because of the Keystone badges. It would have been p,m,p and painted as shown. 24" kicks were common in the 70s, but still the most popular size was the 22 because it was so versatile. A lot less 26s out there, but they are wonderful. Fun stuff. Thanks. I told you I was a geek.
@brianchisnell15482 жыл бұрын
My '69s are mahog/Poplar/ Maple inner. Clear lac. inner. Only themogloss were maple outter. All wrapped kits got the less expensive mahog outter under the wrap. The ludwig book.
@mochs38692 жыл бұрын
"The Blue Sparkle kit was from the 60s because of the keystone badages'....partially true...Ludwig was transitioning to the B/O badges around 1970. The first documented evidence of Ron using this kit was the first show of the first tour in September, 1970 in St Louis right after the Vegas run that made up most of "That's The Way It Is'...when he first got it, it had no concert toms, and I believe 2 different sized kicks looking at pictures...the concert toms were added the next year in 1971. He told me he had just gotten his Ludwig endorsement, but they didn't have all the shells in the sizes and color he wanted available, but they wanted their drums on stage for that tour, so they basically got him what they had until they could get the rest of it made. It wasn't until very recently that I saw a pic from behind the kit that showed that the concert toms were B/O badged with white interiors while the rest of the kit was keystone badged with clear interiors. The kit Michael has in the this video was 90% built by me and they have keystones because I found a shop in England who made and sold replica Chicago Keystone badges with no serial numbers. So I ordered enough for the whole kit and had a local jeweler engrave each one with a custom serial number unique to me.

@mochs38692 жыл бұрын
"Technically" no, even though it does have 8 toms...The OctaPlus was a specific kit configuration that had 8 single headed concert toms from 6" to 16", and then I believe it had an 18" double head floor tom and double kicks...but the name was for the 8 concert toms, not just any 8 drums.

I've never heard anyone say it, and Ron never said it to me, but I have to think the T tape on the bottoms heads was for Tutt! I'm gonna try to start saving my money for the "blue sparkle double-bass Ludwig kit that's my favorite of the kits that Tutt used during his time with Elvis (I live on a small fixed income and 99% of the small monthly income goes toward my living expenses. A Ludwig blue-sparkle double-kick drum kit with concert toms is something that I've wanted ever since I saw Michael's blue sparkle replica and another friend (Brad Swiger) and his 1970 blue sparkle Ludwig double-kick kit.
