Elvis when he sings Gospel makes you feel closer to God. It's literally like he opens the door and you are kneeling before your creator. I instantly get a lump in my throat and began to pray. I TRULY feel he was anointed. He wasn't perfect by anymeans, but he LOVED Christ, God often uses imperfect people. He meets you right where you are. You can FEEL his love and its BEAUTIFUL. I grew up in a Southern Pentecostal church and he INSTANTLY takes me back to a little girl, my Grandmother singing in tongues. It's phenomenal. Harry Reid was a famous Nevada Senator(?) Or Congressman(?) he once said if him & his wife were unable to go to church on Sunday, she would cook a big lunch & put on Elvis Gospel. He said they let Elvis take them to church! They spent the day praising Jesus & enjoyed a huge family meal together. I smiled and thought Elvis would LOVE to know people reacted that way towards his voice. Marion Cooke his maid said someday he would sing gospel to everyone and all the employees got a free song and sermon. She said he was the best friend she ever had and felt the lord with him. I think he found his salvation in the end 💗

Always loved the Kings gospel music. My favourite though is the His Hand In Mine album. There is a purity and clarity here in Elvis's vocals that I do not think he ever bettered but that does not take anything away from his other gospel music.

I agree David..the voice on HHIM is unsurpassed..but I do think imho that his standout gospel performance for sheer drama and presence is HGTA..but that doesn’t take anything away from what you’ve said David😊

This is a great song ,sung by great men and women. I’ve known this song my whole life growing up singing in a choir in a small baptist church in Alabama. I am an Elvis fan but not into it enough to know history and names of artists played with, etc. I appreciate the in depth review and history. I’m just an average guy, casual fan of Elvis. I say all that to say this. I had a dream last night that I was backstage before one of the performances of this song and the dream was so real I had to search the internet to see if this really happened. In the dream Elvis, a smaller middle aged man, and a woman were standing in a room discussing what songs they would sing when they went out on stage in a few minutes. The man made the suggestion to do how great thou art. The conversation was very light and casual. Elvis went to take a drink of tea or coffee or something and they made a joke about how cheap the tea cups/ coffee cups were. Elvis laughing said, “I make sure to get the cheap ones so I can do this” and then tried to break the cup against his forehead. It didn’t break and they all laughed. Elvis then picked up the tea kettle and pretended he was going to smash it against his head. Laughter. Then he picked up a thick fluted glass and did the same to more laughter. Then he threw it against the wall and broke it. All three were laughing. At this moment a lady walks in who seems in charge. Elvis and the two singers are harmonizing on how great thou art. The lady in charge suggest the lady singer finish in a lower note and let the male singer finish in a haunting higher almost falsetto note. Then they performed the song on stage to a cheering crowd. The end of the dream after the concert in the morning they all sat on a park bench and had casual conversation about how it went. Sorry if this is sacrilege to say but I had to get this out of my head. Don’t know why I would have this dream but I enjoyed it whether it really happened or not.

Kind of unbelievable, but at 64 I'm a new and devoted Elvis fan. After listening to everything I could for the last several months, in the last few weeks I've listened almost exclusively to his gospel. So moving. As a life-long searching agnostic, Elvis makes me want to believe, but in a nondenominational way. Something something Elvis bell sheep! Your videos are so informative and enjoyable - thanks for all your hard work!

The more I read about Elvis' movie years, the more I'm convinced it contributed to his prescription dependency. Uninspired songs, silly movie plots , boredom of sitting around movie sets, etc lead to pressure on his personal life to put his name out there i.e. getting married to Priscilla . Great video as usual!

Doesn’t take much to put two and two together does it.. It certainly was a contributing factor.. However it was the 70s or certainly the last 4 years of his life that it got worryingly out of control.. 40/60 in the 60s 60/40 in the 70s So I’ve read..whether this true nor not who knows..but looking at his physical decline I think it’s pretty obvious 😢

Your brother is bang on when he says Elvis was down in the dumps and feeling sick while he was makeing them films in the 60s. Elvis was way better than that and he knew It. So sad the way they treated Elvis at that time makeing film after film. Of course Elvis knew How great thou art don't know why Ray Walker keeps on about that, nice person but give it a rest. Fantastic information from you two Guys must have took ages to do this video. Love the Album / cd of how great thou art there isn't a bad song on there and Elvis vocals are out of this world on every song . Thanks again for all the input you've put into the video.

Thanks for the video, very detailed (Pepe Le Pew/Charles Boyer!). Purchased the "Recorded Live on Stage" CD whilst living in the NT (Alice Springs - they had a great record store there in those days) in the late 90's and was blown away by his version of this great song, which I only knew from Church (still have that CD). Just getting into the Spiritual Albums (Elvis' voice on Stand By Me is amazing) so your video is very timely. Great to see Craig again too and I appreciate the detail and length of this video. Thanks again.

Hi guys, thank you for the passion that you put into your shows, Part 1 and 2 of His Hand In Mine, and How Great Thou Art. The work you both do is amazing and detailed, some stories I had not heard before. Elvis is responsible for me loving Gospel songs, the first time I heard H G T A, that was for me the inspiration to obtain all his Gospel albums, to me now Elvis was/is the only singer of Gospel for me. I play them and they bring peace to me and my surroundings. Thanks Scot and Craig

Another brilliant episode guys!.I have a real soft spot for his gospel recordings and you cover the history in such great and informative detail as to make it fresh again. As an aside my Father in law is a Church Warden and a few times a year they have an open day and he asks me to bring some music to play on the church mixing desk. I usually opt for Elvis and to hear Elvis's voice coming out of the speakers high above the rafters of an old Church environment is truly spellbinding and would make a believer out of the staunchest sceptic!!.Have a great weekend guys.TCB. Another brilliant episode, Scotty, I’m happy that others can watch this and learn about Elvis, this keeps his memory alive, he was just the best there ever was....it’s important that it’s no knock on other entertainers, Frank, Dean, the great Sammy Davis, they were all incredible, but Elvis is like Babe Ruth except he didn’t get the credit he deserved when he was alive but that’s another story, won’t get into that now, thanks for all you do...btw, I saw him 7/19/75 at the Nassau Coliseum, evening show, he was AWESOME, sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ while playing the piano by himself, simply the greatest....

Fantastic video, worthy of this iconic recording. So many things to comment on: I, too, have always felt that Elvis' How Great Thou Art inspiration was Big Chief. I'm sure he heard the record, saw him live and even on the Statesmen TV show. It's quite likely that the first time Elvis saw girls scream at a singer, that it was Big Chief. I've never understood the Ray Walker story. I thought maybe he meant he was the first to show him the sheet music, but even that seems unlikely. The Without Him hypotheses makes sense. It's known Elvis saw The LeFevres and liked their bass, but that could have been after he recorded Without Him. Jake is a hero of mine. When I met him, I was like a little boy and made no sense. I could just imagine if I would have ever had the opportunity with Elvis, I'd probably pass out. Imperials pianist Henry Slaughter (now 93) left the group after this because Elvis helped get him a job at RCA as session pianist. One last thing, Jerry Lewis said the same thing about Hal Wallis. He said ome of Paramount's epics should have said produced my Martin and Lewis.

2312/5000 Thank you for this interesting new passage of yours. The religious and spiritual aspect for Elvis throughout his life was fundamental, for his music, for his person and for the artistic and human path that brought him since he was a child to the church, to the gospel and to God. choral groups and a cappella performances, I follow in a discontinuous way but I believe that one cannot remain distant from this type of music, as one cannot listen casually. Through Elvis I met the Blackwood brothers, JD Summer and the Stamps Quartet and finally the Imperials, similar styles that complete my basic knowledge of the type of sacred music. Before them I loved the Golden Gate Quartet, Mahalia Jackson, and all those small gospel groups from southern Mississippi that fascinated me so much and involved me in my musical continuity and in the study of the genre. Elvis in a very original way managed to amaze me in every sense with his genre albums, the first one I bought His Hand In Mine is the one I love and listen to most often, but I cannot remain indifferent to all the others, He Touched me, You'll never walk alone, He walks beside me and obviously How great thou art. After the mid-sixties Elvis had matured a deep penetrating warm voice that allowed him to reach very high and very low notes, he had the opportunity to shape his talent in every musical genre, always coming out as a winner. You have analyzed in a very interesting way the origins, history and progress over time that have influenced Elvis and I think that better than how you have dealt with the subject could not be done. Thank you so much. I will try to study the album and the story of its birth better, even if His Hand in Mine for me has no boundaries for spontaneity, freshness and passion. Elvis has often honored his fans with sacred songs even live, see Sweet sweet spirit live in Elvis on tour, and again lead me and guide me with Hodge on the piano and again How great thou art in Elvis in concert, his expression kidnapped and his voice repay for so many tired and mediocre appearances and performances, Elvis was also this ....... thanks guys, to your next pleasant job ...... Andrea

Superbly rounded and thoughtful response. This video really could of gone on far longer and deeper if we had the time. His Pentecostal upbringing we really have not touched upon. His encyclopaedic knowledge of white southern gospel was match by his deep knowledge of those black sacred songs he loved so much. It was the constant beat to his life he never tired of it, never. Which is not something that can be said of some of his life. Thank you Andrea.

You guys seem to be on the same wave length as me....but you are spending a lot more time with investigations. I am so happy for that. Your ‘reach’ is far more extensive than mine. And you are clearing up,a lot of questions for us all. I think most people don’t even understand what to ask. I really feel that you...to this point...understand Elvis’s personality. And I believe I do too. His artistic, and spiritual personality, are what drive him....Of course I should say ‘drove’...hard to think of him as...gone. But that is a key as to what happened st the end. He did not deteriorate into drug addiction...he needed medication for his terminal, very painful health ailments. Thank You for your work, your understanding and your loyalty. I am 78 years old..been a fan since 1956...was at Elvis’s 1957 Concert in Vancouver, Canada. We share a strong love for him. Elvis will be loved until the end of time. Rest easy beautiful man ♥️🍁

When you think about Elvis' spiritual longings, he had a "double whammy" with which to deal. He was both a twinless twin AND an only child. And only twins can understand what that's like, and only other onlies can understand the profound loneliness of being an only child. You are twins, so you understand that part of it. You probably can't even imagine a life without your twin. I am an only child, and I knew very few children growing up (and as an adult, too) who didn't have at least one sibling. They all had at least a half-sibling. So I couldn't understand them and their relationships with their parents (except that it was very different) and other people don't understand what it's like to be an only. Or they think they do: "you sure must be spoiled." Very often I felt like a bottle of milk inadvertently left out in the sun on a hot day. "Spoiled," "ruined," not normal, etc. . . Elvis had to deal with both. Despite the serious mistakes he made in his brief life, he was an especially nice, very good person. (I think he must have thought often of the "spoiled" stereotype, which is a terrible, hurtful prejudice applied to people others do not even know, except that they're "an only.". I speak from experience.) Again, these identity issues perhaps contributed to his unusual degree of generosity and respectfulness. From my experience, onlies try very hard to "prove" that we are not "spoiled" by putting the needs of others first. It's definitely two burdens that Elvis handled well.

Elvis believed! Blood coming from all over his body and NAKED hanging on that cross like torture weapon! What a Lord and God and Savior! He had to do it. HE is God the Son and only His body and blood could pay the sins price of ALL ever! 1 John 2:1-2. This channel is a blessing known to God before the world was made. Ephesians 1:1-14. Oh Lord bless this channel. I will pray for you and those gathered here. There is a Crown in Heaven awaiting all who faithfully share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and a soul is saved. ( "JESUS SAVES" below) 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20; Philippians 4:1. " For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? 20 For you are our glory and joy." The Apostle Paul further testified; Romans 1:16 "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek". 2 Samuel chapter 22:verse 50 "Therefore I will praise you, O Lord, out of the countries, and I will praise your name." JESUS SAVES Mark 16: verse 15: "And He said unto them, Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." How can anyone hear the "good" news? Romans 10:17 "Then faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of God." The Birth Of Jesus Christ Isaiah 7:14: "Therefore the LORD shall give you a sign; behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and call His name Immanuel." Hebrew: עִמָּנוּאֵל, "God with us" in human flesh but without sin. The Savior of the world was born to die for our sins! He did so 33 years later. His terrible ordeal, the body was mutilated, the blood was poured out, but the bones were not broken, buried in a Tomb and risen on the 3rd day. Isaiah 53: "5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23 "I am the way, the truth and the life: no one comes to the Father except through me." John 14.6 1 Corinthians 15: "1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:" "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;." Ephesians 1:7 “For he (God) hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Corinthians 5: 21. Ephesians 2:8 " For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:" Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins and rescue us from eternal death. Because of Jesus' death on our behalf, all we have to do is believe in Him, trusting in His death and in the shedding of His blood as payment for our sins, as well as in His burial and resurrection from the dead the third day, and we will be saved! John 20:24-31; See 1 Corinthians 15: 1-4. Romans 10: "9 If you confess the Lord Jesus with your mouth and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart man believes in righteousness; And a confession by mouth is given to salvation. 13 For the one who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Salvation and forgiveness of sins is a blessing of all who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit immediately which seals us in Christ Ephesians 1:13-14. Those who reject salvation, "perish"(John 3:16) which means their sins are judged and suffer separation from God forever called the second death. Rev.21:8
