Gates of Graceland: Secrets of the '68 Special

Elvis Presley made history with his iconic television special, "Elvis," also known as the '68 Special. Fifty years after the show aired, music fans still rave about this incredible special.
In this episode of the Gates of Graceland, host Tom Brown chats with three of the great creative minds who helped Elvis put the special together: director Steve Binder, music director Billy Goldenberg and writer Allan Blye. These men share behind-the-scenes stories of working with Elvis, how the show came together and more.
Just this month, NBC aired "Elvis All-Star Tribute," a tribute to Elvis and the '68 Special. Hosted by Blake Shelton, the special featured artists such as Carrie Underwood, Yolanda Adams, John Fogerty, John Legend, Post Malone, Shawn Mendes, Pistol Annies, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, Adam Lambert, Little Big Town, Dierks Bentley, Josh Groban, Alessia Cara, Kelsea Ballerini, Darius Rucker, Ed Sheeran and Mac Davis. Elvis' daughter Lisa Marie Presley and his granddaughter, Riley Keough, also made appearances in the special.

Steve Binder seems as humble and appreciative as Tom Parker was arrogant and controlling. As so others have noted, this is peak Elvis and I’ve enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look at the majestic TV special. “If I can Dream” is one of my favorite songs. Truly a masterpiece in every respect.

Elvis did well because of Elvis. He was generous, loyal, charismatic, genuine, and extremely talented. Parker did nothing, but drain him. Elvis was loyal to a fault with that one. His beginnings were humble and his personality stayed that way. He knew where he came from and never forgot it. When he did things for people, he did it from his heart and never for show or publicity. His legacy lives.

The '68 Comeback Special was incredible and knowing a little about what Steve Binder had done in the past (T.A.M.I. show plus producing a couple of well known groups in the 1960's) he was the perfect Captain to right the ship and bring back the Elvis we all know. Elvis was glowing and back in his element of a live audience performing. Little strokes of genius doing the sit down portion with Scotty and D.J. and the majestic "If I Can Dream" to close the show gave our collective souls hope for a better future after losing Martin Luther King, Jr. and Bobby Kennedy to assassin's bullets. Everyone who was involved was brilliant, but Elvis' star was the brightest. ELVIS was back! After that sessions cut at American went on to become some of his best work and showed the innermost soul of the greatest entertainer of all time.

There's no doubt Elvis was one of the greats. I absolutely loved the guy. But nobody is the greatest performer who ever lived. That's all conjecture and based upon your taste. Everybody feels that their influences and heroes are the greatest. That's just human nature. Sinatra fans feel Sinatra was the greatest. Beatles fans feel the Beatles were the greatest, and on and on and on it goes.

What a great video of how this incredible show was put together. I was a boy of ten lying on the floor watching this special on TV with my mom. Even then, I can remember the last song If Can Dream, hearing the lyrics reminding people of the assassinations of great leaders we lost. Through the years of growing up I looked high and low for this album but never seemed to find it. Finally, a VHS tape was made for selling. I wore it out. I read the cover notes of names of people that were responsible for the success of the special. Seeing this KZbin video, I can now see the faces of the staff I read about hearing their words of ideas that were implemented. Hearing first hand of Elvis fears, about the Colonel's manipulation and behind the scenes information of what was needed to make this show a success. The recent movie "Elvis" touched on the makings of this show but it was nice to see the actual people's own words of what it took to get it done. Great job everybody.

I was in Memphis during the 50th anniversary of the '68 Special and went to the live showing of Steve Binder and the others here, but it was so much better in person because it was much longer and more detailed. Plus afterward, I bought Steve's book on the '68 Special and met and talked w him as I got him to sign and comment in my copy. It was quite an experience meeting these very humble and honest guys that I've read about my entire life. We parted w me thanking each of them for their part in making the greatest of the greats music specials and assisting Elvis in perfecting his ICONIC Special!!

Back in 1992, when I was in graduate school and living in a huge graduate dorm, I rented from a local video store the Comeback Special. I played the closing "If I Can Dream" segment for a guy, Javier, who was from Spain. So he had never really been exposed to Elvis. He was wide-eyed and almost speechless at the end, and he turned to me and said, "Eees majestic".

Thanks the 68 special is hard for me to watch for some reason i believe its because i love and miss elvis like i do any footage of elvis is hard for me to watch because i love and miss elvis like i do but i watch anyway what elvis fan can walk away from elvis performing on stage and or on the big screen and or t.v.

I sooo want more people to see this. People really don’t believe that Parker wanted a Christmas special. They don’t really know what all had to happen, keeping Colonel Parker busy and out of the room in order to create what they did with Elvis. I would love permission to share. I have 2,500 subscribers. They are the right age to want to c this. I don’t want to get paid at all. I would love permission. This was so beautiful touching and gave me goosebumps hearing the story of how this was created. All the stars had to line up.
