I FEEL SO RIDICULOUS BUT OH MY GAWD- ANOTHER EDITED VERSION OF A JAM SESSION- I WANNA CRY 😭😭😭😭😭😭 It's only 18 seconds that was cut off but still. I'm one of THOSE Elvis fans now 😨😤😲😖😳😰 Like a full range of head vs heart here. Do you have any idea how bloody UNSAMMY that is?! I'm always, always head over heart. But when it comes to edited Elvis jam sessions... NOPE. I'm gutted, heartbroken, and all kinds of confused, befuddled, bewildered, and bothered. Okay not a full Sammy Rant. Because I already knew there was a Faded Master version as well as a more released full unedited version. So Seph really not your fault or your friend's fault on this one. I blame RCA for this. Seriously. If I could go back some 54 years ago I tell you what I'd get my fair share of licks in (and I do not mean that in a literal way; I mean I would give certain people a piece of my mind. I'd totally kick some @$$.) And yes, Seph, "lick" is an old- no- longer- in- use American expression that translates in modern day terms as "I'll kick the guy's @$$ that says it isn't so." Okay so, LOTS to get into on this one! Seph I know I'm giving you lots of reading to catch up on & I just wanna say here that you take your time slogging through it all. I know I should be sorry for making you feel like you're back in high school (GCE's for you I think) but- and this proves I am a FULL ON NERD- I'm not sorry 😬 Sorry that I'm not sorry for that, please forgive 🙏 Gold stars, crowns, hearts, flames to you for being SUCH a wonderful, wonderful 🎶Angel🎶 through this whole journey 🌟👑💛🔥🌟👑💛🔥🌟👑💛🔥🌟👑💛🔥🌟👑💛🔥🌟👑💛🔥🌟👑💛🔥🌟👑💛🔥🌟👑💛🔥 So there are 26 recorded versions of this song. All of which have different titles and varying lyrics and even musicianship. It really depends on which version you listen to whether you are going to get country, folk, or gospel. Or a mash up of all three which Elvis did, and as far as I can tell (because yes, I did listen to some 14 or 15 out of the 17 versions that were recorded before Elvis recorded his- I could not find the very few I did not listen to draw a comparison) his is the only version that has a unique blend of comedy, gospel, folk, country, and rock. Too Elvis's lyrics are different than all the other versions (which is not at all surprising since each version has differing/ varying lyrics). The tune itself was originally meant to be comedic in nature and written originally in a traditionally Amerucan folk style. I'll get into that later in a separate comment. I will add too Doc Watson's 1964 version is worth a listen though his version is titled "Born About Six Thousand Years Ago". Golden Gate Quartet also did a version of this song titled "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago" back in 1937 but their version is more traditional Gospel Quartet style and too their lyrics are different from Elvis's version and musically the two versions could not sound more different. Elvis was a known fan of theirs but I don't think he got inspiration from their version at all. Most likely he had heard different versions of this song growing up by a number of different folks and various recording artists. He just sang the lyrics that he remembered from various versions and threw them together in his version on the fly. At least that is what I got from my going down the "Ten Thousand Years Ago" song rabbit hole. Musically once again Elvis's version is different from the other versions. Then again this was actually a jam session done between two intense ballads, "I've Lost You" and "The Sound Of Your Cry". This was just Elvis and his band letting off steam and cutting loose, believe it or not. Before I get into the recording session info here I have one more bit of info to add here in this comment (I will be doing a second comment that has song history info). When RCA compiled the "Elvis Country" album it was decided to use short, cut up sections of the recording "I Was Born About 10,000 Years Ago" in between tracks on the album to make the project feel more like of a concept album. Elvis Recording Session Below: "I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago" written by Harry C. Clyde (lyrics) and H.C. Verner (music)(1894) & first recording by Fiddlin' John Carson March 1924 & first released in September 1924 under the song title "When Abraham And Isaac Rushed the Can". [Elvis] Recorded at RCA Studio B in Nashville, TN on June 4/5, 1970 Hours: June 4: 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.; June 4 & 5: 10:00 p.m.- 1:00 a.m.; June 5: 1:30 a.m.- 4:30 a.m. Producer: Felton Jarvis Engineer: Al Pachucki Musicians: Guitar: Elvis Presley Guitar: James Burton Guitar: Chip Young Guitar: Charlie Hodge Drums: Jerry Carrigan Piano: David Briggs Bass: Norbert Putnam Organ/ Harmonica: Charlie McCoy Marimba: Charlie McCoy ("Twenty Days And Twenty Nights") Harmony Vocals: Charlie Hodge ("Twenty Days And Twenty Nights") Take 1: (Master) 3:33 Unedited Undubbed Master Overdub (Master) 3:33 Guitar, trambone, and harmony vocals overdubbed unedited master Faded Master 3:13 Master Faded Finally: There are 4 more recent versions of this song, recorded by different artists from 2009- 2020. And oh wait I forgot: Seph you know Barry Manilow?!?!?! Okay I never use this term but I am officially shook 😱 My Grams, may she rest in peace, loved that guy 😊 THANK YOU AS ALWAYS SEPH FOR SHARING 💐 YES SO MUCH FUN THIS ONE I LOVE IT 🔥💛🔥💛🔥💛🔥💛🔥💛 TCB ⚡ & TLC ❤ & peace ✌& blessings 🙏 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕

@@jjbud3124 My maternal grandmother was born in 1919. When she served as a U.S. Army nurse overseas during WWII she had this one male nurse under her command (she was a Lieutenant). Every woman nurse knew he was gay. During the night shifts he would join their crochet circle and sit there and knit with them. Not one person had a problem with him. He was accepted in their circle and became part of their group. So not everyone in those days were anti- gay. Or had a problem with people that weren't heterosexual. It was the laws that stunk (see Alan Turing of Britain) and the people that were openly prejudice that was more the issue than anything. I should add that was when my grandmother served in a hospital in Southampton England. My grandmother served all over Europe. But she spent the most time there.

Good morning dear Seph. When it comes to Elvis the word “jam” has its own meaning. Whenever he would cut loose all others in the room had nothing more to do than to hold on! As I listen to this one I picture him, animated and impishly grinning for having imposed this satirical song on his fellow musicians…truly a man of ten thousand musical faces. And to Sammy, loved the rant! I always learn so much from you but I must disagree on one of your points…your heart comes shinning through on every comment you make. Who, other than you applies so much research to Elvis for his followers. And I’ll lick the guy who says it isn’t so!😜. As always Seph, thanks for taking us along.

Fun one for sure! The way lick was used actually meant to beat up, but your take on it was hilarious. I think it'll be a bittersweet day for you when you hear your last Elvis song. But don't fret. Hearing all of his songs is only the beginning. We don't have to ask Seph 🎶Are You Sincere🎶 when it comes to his love for Elvis. I know his love for Elvis is genuine. I can see it on his face and hear it in his voice whenever he talks about how much love and respect he has for Elvis. If or when Seph goes to Graceland I for one hope he can take pictures and share with us all his trip there in a video. (Unfortunately Seph once you get past the gates of Elvis's home you can't film anything. But you can take pictures 😀👍) The absolute best thing of course would be to be able to go with him. If only to see his reaction. I bet that would be a priceless experience.

Song History Below (from an article I found by E. Wald): This song seems to have first been published in 1894 as “I Am a Highly Educated Man,” with lyrics by Harry C. Clyde and music by H. C. Verner, a pair of old-time pop music hacks - Verner, for example, was credited not only with 1893’s “Won’t You Be My Sweetheart?” but also “Yes, I’ll Be Your Sweetheart” (with Clyde) and “I Won’t Be Your Sweetheart Anymore.” Their version shared about half the verses of Doc’s (which was titled “I Was Born About Six Thousand Years Ago”) and there were intermediary versions by many of the top early hillbilly stars, including Fiddlin’ John Carson, Vernon Dalhart, Uncle Dave Macon, and Charlie Poole, often titled “I’m the Man that Rode the Mule Around the World.” I’d guess this was a minstrel show comedy number, since there were lots of minstrel routines based on the idea that southern plantation dwellers had comically simplistic notions of Biblical history - indeed, there was a huge Broadway hit built on that foundation, Green Pastures, as well as the Gershwin brothers’ “It Ain’t Necessarily So.” But that’s just a guess. Incidentally, the line about “Peter, Paul, and Moses playing ring-around-the-roses” is what inspired Peter, Paul, and Mary to call themselves that, requiring Noel Stookey to change his name. Also incidentally, I always thought of this as a southern song, so assumed General Hooker was southern - but it turns out that General Joseph Hooker was born in Hadley, Massachusetts, and served in the Union army during in the Civil War, leading troops in Tennessee, among other regions. Note: I had to edit out a teensy tiny bit of the article for certain reasons. Sorry cannot get more specific than that.

The decision to follow up the magnificent sessions in Memphis by going back to RCA's Nashville studio and hiring Nashville musicians, must have puzzled quite a few people at the time. However, as Chip Moman's Memphis studio had folded, both RCA and Felton Jarvis must have been pleased to see the situation return to what it had been before - RCA because of administrative differences with Chip Moman, and Jarvis because he would once more be in total control again. Felton Jarvis had quit RCA in the beginning of 1970, and from the June sessions onwards would work for Elvis exclusively, both in the recording studios and with live recordings. ln this capacity Jarvis supervised all the arrangements such as booking studios, hiring musicians, and staying in touch with the various publishing companies and RCA June 4, 1970 RCA Studio B - Nashville, Tennessee Mystery Train / Tiger Man (Jam) Twenty Days & Twenty Nights ZPA4 1593-09 I've Lost You ZPA4 1594-07 I Was Born About Ten Thousand Years Ago ZPA4 1595-01 The Sound Of Your Cry ZPA4 1596-11 Faded Love (Country Version) WPA5 2584-01 The Fool ZPA4 1597-02 A Hundred Years From Now WPA5 2569-SP Little Cabin On The Hill ZPA4 1598-02 Cindy Cindy ZPA4 1599-03 Bridge Over Troubled Water ZPA4 1600-08 Got My Mojo Working / Keep Your Hands Off It ZPA4 1601-01 How The Web Was Woven ZPA4 1602-03 It's Your Baby, You Rock It ZPA4 1603-05 Stranger In The Crowd ZPA4 1604-09 I'll Never Know ZPA4 1605-07 Mary In The Morning ZPA4 1606-05 June 6, 1970 RCA Studio B - Nashville, Tennessee I Didn't Make It On Playing Guitar (Jam) WPA5 2583-01 It Ain't No Big Thing ZPA4 1607-09 You Don't Have To Say You Love Me ZPA4 1608-03 Just Pretend ZPA4 1609-03 This Is Our Dance ZPA4 1610-11 Life ZPA4 1613-20 Heart Of Rome ZPA4 1614-03 Heart Of Rome (Work Part) ____-01 Heart Of Rome (Composite) ZPA4 1614-SP June 7, 1970 RCA Studio B - Nashville, Tennessee June 7, A new idea began taking shape. Barry Manilow was worried that people might think he was talking about himself and what an ego. He explained it was supposed to be God he was talking about. Once you know, it became even more interesting. This was never my favorite song, but once again Elvis’s tongue in cheek comes through with his singing. He always knows the best way to portray a song to make it even better. By the way you were asking on one of the songs who occasionally sings harmony with Elvis. I believe it’s Charlie Hodge who he met in the Army who was actually a singer also. You’ll see he & Elvis sing next to each other. Thanks Seph. ALWAYS look forward to your reactions to Elvis.
