Anne Murray had her first #1 hit with this song in 1970. She's one of my favorite singers. Elvis regarded her as one of the best. I saw her in concert in 1971. I had a bunch of her albums. Elvis did this song at Las Vegas and said before doing it "Bless America and parts of China." I think he did a fine job with Snowbird.

Anne was one of my dad's favorite singers back in the day, so I grew up with those records. Singing along. Doing karaoke basically before it became a thing. When it did, Snowbird was one of my favorite songs to sing. My father ended up having his own karaoke outfit and we had many a fun time getting out and singing. 💕 Loved those days. Wish I could go back. ✌️❤️

I became an Elvis fan when I was 11 year old (1985). I loved Elvis' look, voice, style, dancing everything about him. I couldnt understand English yet, but that came about 2 years later and I remember how much more I appreciated gis songs after that. Here 39 years after I still listen to him every day and have lots of LPs and over 500 of his concerts and lots of boxsets and other cds. I can highly recommend people to buy some of the box sets. Fx "Prince from another planet"( The concerts from madison Square garden 72, together with a dvd), "Elvis a boy from Tupelo"( all the studio and live recording from 54-55), "Elvis way down in the jungle room"(all the songs from his last two recording sessions 76, with outtakes, undubbed songs in AMAZING sound). Just to mention a few.

Enjoyed this one Seph. The song does have a tendancy to make you smile! The “Elvis Country” album opens with Anne Murray's "Snowbird" and is probably not the strongest track on the album but Elvis' vocal is pleasant enough. It is quite lively and Elvis gives a high spirited rendition not necessarily in keeping with the mood in the recording studio. It was recorded on 22 September 1970 at RCA’s studio b in Nashville and was the first track recorded at the session. This session was hastily scheduled in order for Elvis to record some additional material to supplement that recorded in June. Elvis was not entirely enthused at this idea and his mood is well captured during “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” from the session but it benefits the recording somewhat. “Snowbird” was completed in six takes before “The Imperials” added additional backing vocals the following day. The recording process was completed firstly by adding orchestral strings and then removing the additional vocal backing!

I was once singing this actual song on our karaoke when suddenly a little bird flew straight into the window and broke its neck! My husband said, "I'll have to bury it. Just carry on singing." I was really shocked and felt sad so I waited for a while but still couldn't exactly carry on singing that one and just clicked "next". I couldn't believe the next song was "If tomorrow never comes". I just put the mic down and switched it all off. 😅

2nd comment: Song Info Below (Source: Wiki- again I know time constraint): "Snowbird" is a song written by Canadian singer-songwriter Gene MacLellan. Though it has been recorded by many performers, it is best known through Anne Murray's 1969 recording, which-after appearing as an album track in mid-1969-was released as a single in mid-1970. The song was a No. 2 hit on Canada's pop chart and went to No. 1 on both the Canadian adult contemporary and country charts. The song reached No. 8 on the U.S. pop singles chart, spent six weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. adult contemporary chart, and became a surprise Top 10 U.S. country hit as well. It was certified as a gold single by the RIAA, the first American Gold record ever awarded to a Canadian solo female artist. It peaked at No. 23 on the UK Singles Chart. In 2003 it was an inaugural song inductee of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. Anne Murray and Gene MacLellan had met while both were regulars on the CBC television series Singalong Jubilee and Murray recorded two of MacLellan's compositions, "Snowbird" and "Biding My Time", for her first major label album release, This Way Is My Way, in 1969. Murray would recall: "Gene told me he wrote ["Snowbird"] in twenty minutes while walking on a beach on Prince Edward Island." "Snowbird" sold well over a million copies and was picked as 19th on the 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version list, a partially populist approach to defining the most influential songs by Canadians. Songwriter Info will be in a separate comment.

I'm going to be totally honest here: You actually just made me appreciate this song more. Yeah back in NJ we had "snowbirds" too. Those that could afford to in the NY/ NJ/ Pennsylvania/ Connecticut region would flock down to either The Carolinas (North or South Carolina) or to Florida. You knew they really had bank when they flocked either to Arizona or Las Vegas for the winter. Very, very few would flock to the Caribbean or to Mexico for the winter. Like very few. Now I knew a guy who had family in Puerto Rico and would go there for like holidays and weddings and stuff. Funny aside: He said that the capital of Puerto Rico looked like Manhattan painted in pink. I couldn't help it. I laughed my butt off at his description. And yes I have been to Florida. If you don't like sweltering humidity and bugs I do not recommend. My friend and I made a mistake deciding to go on a walk to the library. Half way there we made a necessary detour to an ice cream shop. We didn't care about the calories. We just needed something cold. We were so hot, sweaty and panting gross hot. Both of our hair looked like Bride of Frankenstein's. I'm not joking. Good thing neither of us wore make up. We woud have looked like Swamp Thing 1 & Swamp Thing 2 or something. Ugh, it was terrible. Florida has some really beautiful parts. The Florida Keys and The Florida Everglades for instance. But it is the United States equivalent of Australia: Everything there it seems wants to 💀 you. From the giant snapping turtles to the alligators to the tiny bugs that live in standing still water who carry deadly zoonosis (get water up your nose you're gonna get a parasitic brain infection) to even the weather (hurricanes). I'm not trying to scare any one but yeah. Florida is different. Right! Moving on! We used to go to the Catskills (New York State) for a weekend here & there in the summer months. I may or may not tell you my tubing story some time. (Tubing is what we call floating down a river in a large tube or donut shaped air- filled "float". I do not know what if anything you Brits call a water float thingy you can sit in butt end in water and feet and hands paddling lazily in water- if you do choose to paddle yourself. You could also just let the current carry you down stream.)

Elvis had natural comic timing but he could also do serious roles. Unfortunately the fans and the press didn't want to see him in serious roles. Wild in the Country is a really good film for seeing his potential as well as King Creole. Blue Hawaii, Gi Blues and Follow that Dream are more comic.

3rd comment: Songwriter Info Below: Gene MacLellan (February 2, 1938 - January 19, 1995) was a Canadian singer-songwriter from Prince Edward Island. Among his compositions were "Snowbird", made famous by Anne Murray, "Put Your Hand in the Hand", "The Call", "Pages of Time" and "Thorn in My Shoe". Elvis Presley, Lynn Anderson, Loretta Lynn, Joan Baez, and Bing Crosby were among the many artists who recorded MacLellan's songs. MacLellan was born in Val-d'Or, Quebec, in 1938. He grew up in Toronto in a working class Presbyterian family. As a child, MacLellan contracted polio. MacLellan was one of the founding members of The Consuls, a Toronto rock band formed in 1956. He played lead and rhythm guitar and sang with the group between 1956 and 1960. In 1963, MacLellan was injured in a car accident in which his father died. MacLellan suffered scarring on the left side of his face as a result of the accident. In 1964, he moved to Pownal, Prince Edward Island, where he lived with his aunt and worked as a farm labourer and mental hospital attendant. While living in Prince Edward Island, MacLellan began writing songs, including "Snowbird", which was inspired by his observation of a flock of snow buntings on a beach. He made his first television appearance in 1970 on Don Messer's Jubilee. In the same year, he became a regular performer on Singalong Jubilee with Anne Murray and Bill Langstroth. In 1970, Anne Murray's recording of "Snowbird" became a hit in Canada and the United States. BMI recognized MacLellan as the first Canadian lyricist to have a song broadcast over one million times in the United States. MacLellan won a Juno Award in 1971 as Canadian composer of the year, while Anne Murray was named best female vocalist. Anne Murray also recorded another MacLellan song, "Just Bidin' My Time", which was issued on the same 45 RPM single as "Snowbird". MacLellan released his self-titled album in 1970 which included "The Call", another of his compositions that became a hit for Anne Murray. His shy and introspective nature made public performances difficult for him. He made his first cross-country tour in early 1972. In Toronto, he played at Massey Hall, the Canadian National Exhibition, and the Riverboat coffee house. In 1971, Canadian band Ocean's recording of MacLellan's "Put Your Hand in the Hand" became a hit, reaching number two on the pop charts in the United States and number ten in Canada. Over 100 performers, including Elvis Presley, Joan Baez, and Bing Crosby have recorded "Put Your Hand in the Hand". MacLellan released a second album, If It's Alright with You, in 1977. In 1979, he recorded Gene and Marty, an album of gospel songs, with his fellow Prince Edward Islander Marty Reno. From 1980 until his death in 1995, MacLellan performed only in small noncommercial venues such as churches, prisons and nursing homes. He was active in "Cons for Christ", a Christian organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of prison inmates in Canada. I cannot post Gene MacLellan's end- of- life circumstances so for anyone interested here is the link to read further on: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_MacLellan Okay, that is it for this one I think! Oh, and Seph, Elvis went on the record to name Anne Murray as his favorite female vocalist. I do know his favorite female Gospel singer was Mahalia Jackson. Just FYI 😊
