Elvis led me to listen to the Blues. He starts Little Sister on the 7th chord. And that is a funk chord. Elvis was indeed a White man that never explained to the public how much his music was based on being a student of Black music. That was his greatest Sin!

Not only was Elvis a decent guitar player but he was also efficient at piano. He didn't have to be great at guiar he has his superb voice. I find it very impressive that Elvis was capable of carrying himself on two instruments while having the greatest voice

+Shane-Co Productions He was an ok guitar & piano player, I doubt he practiced enough or had the determination to become proficient at either. Most decent singers can at least accompany themselves on the guitar or piano enough to follow the key changes when they are rehearsing. You can hear on some of Elvis' studio outtakes that he is playing accoustic accompaniment but this would usually be removed if it was to be mixed into a release. I think his best guitar work was undoubtably during the sit down performance of 68 special

To Austin Sheckler, the guitar Elvis is playing is a1960's style Gretsch Country Gentleman, just like Gearge Harrison played when he was in the Beatles. Getsch now has a version of it with solid maple block in the center of the body, which, to me, made a classic axe even better!

Great point! So many want to be critical of either his musicianship, his vocals, his clothes, lack of writing, etc. The bottom line is that almost all artists love him. Why? Because you don't have a career that long by simply being lucky. There are so many takes of this show ( or series of shows) and he is doing many things exactly the same including patter and it seems fresh and new each time! Elvis was much more of a precise, well oiled performer than given credit for....bottom line, the man was a PRO.

Kathy McGowan he is just so organic and raw here. This concert ( or series of) is Elvis at his pinnacle. Better voice, better stage presence, and rock solid confidence. His connection with the audience is unreal, they react to every move, sigh, sniffle and sneeze. Don't forget he did this in front of a battle hardened Vegas audience made up largely of seasoned entertainers and floored em all. Truly amazing.

***** He joked about it in 77 but clarified it before in 72 correcting the Mayor on TV stating that he (Elvis) played the guitar when he started out in the 50s. He had to. It was only Scotty and Bill backing him up. He would have been strumming for many years since it was reported that he played the guitar regularly as a child; probably chords but nonetheless.

*** 'A Great Day for The King' *** For on this day in 1961 {August 28th} Elvis Presley's 13th studio album, "Something For Everybody" peaked at #1 {for 3 weeks} on Billboard's Top 200 Album chart And on that very same day "(Marie's the Name) His Latest Flame" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #4 The record's flip-side, "Little Sister", also made the Top 10, it reached #5 Neither "Latest Flame" or "Little Sister" appeared on the "Something For Everybody" album

I'm too late to be in the ETA contest, but I'm going anyway just to be there. It will be fun partying with a bunch of Elvis fans and strangers on The Strip. I'll make a lot of connections. Thanks. I worked helping set up some of his shows ~'69/70. Elvis was a competent rhythm guitarist who had an impeccable sensibility for a song. If he'd wanted to become a picker, he could have...but he had that voice..... Elvis also played piano well enough to have played when he, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis Johnny Cash got together. He can be heard on You Tube on a mix of Suspicious Minds, Piano Interlude....Fantastically talented man.

Really - thanks for that Marcus, very interesting... I'll find that version of SM you mentioned. By the way how did they manage to put out as a single the wrong take of SM ? I read that Elvis was upset about it - the released version noticably fades out and then back in again towards the end...he certainly made up for it on stage

These shows in Vegas in 1970 may have been his very best ever. I saw him twice in Chicago once on June 17, 1972 afternoon show. I was a little kid but we had front row seats, Uncle filmed segments, they are on KZbin all choppy with audio added. He wore that paisley shirt, white pants, and a white sport jacket with a cape lined in silk I'm sure. From 1970-1973, Elvis took his roots in rhythm and blues, country, and gospel quartets, along with the orchestra and the best musicians in the business and sold out every show in 3 years That is the Elvis that I remember being so great in his early 30s up to about 38 years old at the aloha show via satellite. After that things went terribly bad for him, but a film like this, really captures what Elvis was as a grown man and a superstar. I wish he would come back and do another tour so I can appreciate it more as an adult. I saw him May 1977 and he was messed up, I was impressed with his courage to do the concerts that year. I remember he was late, came out at 8:00 pm he was supposed to be out at 7:30. There were some shouts from the audience, some left, ended up a classic concert May 21, 1977 at the old Chicago Stadium. We stayed at the Arlington Park Hilton, Elvis and his whole crew had the 7th floor I think? Foil on E's room, J.D. Sumner smoking and drinking in the lobby bar there with lots of the other guys that were always with him. Coolest was outside by a side door to right of main entrance was a door that went into the kitchen I think down a ramp. Outside, two black Cadillac Fleetwoods. The plates on cars were: TCB 1, TCB 2, both Tennessee plates, parked in the closest spots to that door to the kitchen. Drove by it the building is there still, saw it from the interstate a few months ago, I want to go there soon and see what it looks like today. He opened up with CC Rider and that electricity he produced was there. Something really special about being in the same house as him, I saw him at his best in 72 and worst in 77. I really wish someone would have stopped him and helped him but he wanted no part of it and needed the money real bad, he was close to losing everything. I look at it like this, so few have been able to leave a legacy behind their self, especially the one he left. That was a blow to the entire country it really was. Elvis has left the building......same old shit right? Nope he was the best, sorry for boring you guys with this. I wish someone like him would come around again but it will never happen. RIP Elvis.
