When I saw this as a 13 yo kid I didn’t know what to make of it. Wasn’t the Elvis I knew after so many movies. Years later I appreciated it as an amazing production. I did at the time love the black leather performances, and white suit finale.

I love Elvis but I had never seen this one before. Just truly amazing. And I have composed to modern dance scores and in the process you work very closely with the choreography as it's being developed and those dancers are athletes. It's interesting to see how it was done decades earlier. A great number for sure.

Dani. I've been alive for 7 decades of music. I remember every note. I've seen so many of the greats of those years. Elvis opened the door for so many through his style. I thank you for appreciating this older generation of music....what I grew up on.

The opening of this with a black man performing (I wish I knew his name) is very revealing. It was only a couple years earlier that Bill Cosby became the first black man to co-star on a television series. There must have been consternation thrown at Elvis' for this, including his closing tribute to Martin Luther King. Absolutely criminal that he hasn't been recognized more for his contributions to the civil rights movement. Very honorable of him to do this in a manner that let his actions speak for him, and without fanfare.

Love this! I was only 12 years old when this Special aired on tv in 1968 but l remember every moment of it! I was so mesmerized by Elvis .l grew up with Elvis always playing in my house because my older brother was a huge fan. He had every Elvis album and he took me to every Elvis movie. Such great memories, ♥️♥️🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦🇨🇦

How good was this! Elvis shows that no artistic movement is created in a vacuum. This performance was a great homage to R&B and gospel music as the fertile ground for rock ‘n’ roll music! It was a great testimony of faith as well!

Steve Binder was the Director and please read about him. He’s all over KZbin. Both Elvis and Steve Binder were very aware of the changes in the country at that time and made sure of the integrated singers and dancers. That special was a breakthrough in many many ways.

Imagine if this 1968 special would have been just an Elvis Christmas special. That's what his manager wanted cause it aired around Christmas time in 1968. That's what Colonel Tom Parker wanted. Once the Colonel left the room where Elvis was with the director of this show, Elvis said to the director this ain't gonna be no Christmas show. He concedes one time during the show and sings Blue Christmas. Elvis was so nervous sitting at home with his family when this special came on. As the show went on, Elvis felt so at ease and was happy with the show. Everyone loved this Dani. Like Ientioned in another comment I never heard people who were in the audience talk about seeing Elvis live. All 33 years of my life as a huge fan, I never heard someone say I was there in the audience. I've searched people out and I can't find it. Like mentioned the audience was changed during different setups. Maybe that's the reason.

The short lady on Elvis' far left (your right side) as he descended the staircase is Darlene Love. She was in a number of girl groups...most notably, 'The Crystals' (He's a Rebel, Then He Kissed Me). She also made her mark in movies, paying the wife of Detective Roger Murtaugh in the 'Lethal Weapon' series.

"Yeah*, he was so giving and respectful. And most of all loved God. And praised God! Through his gospel music. What a sweet sweet southern soul. You know he was a mama's boy. So humbled. Never did act hi - headed he would not brag. Oh and you might like to react to another song that is if you haven't already Dani Atkinson :-).. A it's titled *"It Hurts Me"* and it is a very difficult song to sing in my personal opinion..

Its interesting in the special there was so much ''TV glitz" and choreography that in ways distracts from Elvis. He truly didnt need the "fluff" of TV. That was evident once he stepped back on stage in '68 in Vegas and went back on the road. He didnt need the dancers or "showbiz" junk to entertain. That's what still today sets him apart from the others today. Elvis could hold the attention of the audience on his own.

Dani Yes the director of the 68 special Steve Binder. I always felt like Steve should have managed Elvis' career. Steve is still with us,. Learn about Steve. I've met him. Wonderful man. There is a great story of steve telling elvis to come out of the studio and go for a walk. Elvis kept telling Steven I'll get bombarded by oads of ppl. Steve replied to Elvis no one will recognize you. They walked down the streets and Steve was right. No one recognized him. This is June of 1968 in burbank, ca where the show was filmed. Elvis couldn't believe no one recognized him. They're were all hippies everywhere. Maybe elvis sunglasses helped the disguise 😆

I remember watching this with my whole family. My parents hated this number. It was way to modern for them. Interpretive dance was experiencing a boom and was very popular. I remember thinking at the time that the red suit and red background seemed a risqué choice for gospel. THat was very unusual. But for the most part we all loved it and we even cheered a few times. He was one of a kind.
