I wasn't crazy about all the 70s songs Elvis sang. Some of the gospel stuff, the work he did on the Change of Habit soundtrack and In the Ghetto were fantastic, but Elvis's wheelhouse was blues rock. It allowed him to not only show off his vocal range but also his charisma and just how cool he was on stage. He became almost a cheesy caricature in his later years in the jumpsuit. For me, he peaked in the 1968 comeback special. That was the best I've ever seen or heard him as a performer. From there, he became more over the top and lost a lot of what made him cool and cutting edge. Leather Jacket Elvis is probably the best look for him and the voice was on point in '68. Unfortunately, I think a lot of what was going on in his personal life led to the character we see in the 70s. If only he'd had the courage to stand up to the Colonel and star in A Star Is Born with Barbara Streisand. I think he would have been dynamite in that role. He proved in King Creole, Flaming Star, Love Me Tender and even Change of Habit that he had the acting chops to pull off a good dramatic performance. He just rarely got that chance.
