This was just one of the performances for a tv special starring solely Elvis. The director thought it would be effective to dress him in black leather for much of the show. This show was referred to as the comeback special because it was his return to live performances for the first time in 7 years. During those 7 years he made movies .

He was the original reble. If you go back to the fifties and say watch the video of Jailhouse Rock, it will give you an idea. Way ahead of his time. Like the great James Brown said, he took the early abuse that opened the door for all others could go through. But I wouldn't start listening to Elvis to much because it will become a good habit that would be impossible to quit. Thanks man. I happy you liked it.

This was his first appearance on TV after the end of his movie contract. 7 or 8 years he only made movies. This show named "Elvis" was a huge success, an the ( little rebel ) black leather suit was a great incidence. In this TV special, later and till today named the "'68 Comeback Special" he showed his huge talent again, and he was better than ever. He invented himself new and decided to go back on stage. Till his dead in 1977 every single concert was sold out. You should take a look at the DVD, you won't regret it ! Thanks for your reaction 👍

@@allreactions3281 IF you take your time to watch an E movie: Jailhouse Rock, King Creole and Flaming Star (western ) are three of his best. Only a tip, just to save your time. 😉 Most of the following movies were not so great, but not because of E, ( he wasn't a bad actor ) but the scripts were aweful. Looking forward to the next Elvis reaction video!

Elvis was a rebel all of his life. In a good sense. Try some of his earlier live performances from the ‘50’s like “ready teddy” or movie scenes like “mean woman blues”. But my first request would be the audio of “My babe”

He also had a strong spiritual side. He put out some amazing gospel albums. He also did some nice straight up Country albums. I wasn't generally into those two genres, but I'd listen to Elvis sing the phone book or a restaurant menu.

Thanks for your Elvis reactions. I know in your If I Can Dream reaction you said you really liked his raspy voice. You'll find that his voice was like this a lot during the his 68 comeback performances. The sit down shows which this song is from, are phenomenal. It was basically him jamming on stage with a few other musicians. Keep up the good work!

The director of the television special decided to put him in black leather because that's how the public pictured him in the early days of rock... the fifties. This is the only time he actually wore it performing. It was too hot to work in. This look is iconic Elvis because of this one performance. He hadn't done a live show, or a television performance in eight years, which is why this is referred to as "The Comeback Special". In the meantime he was just making three movies a year and was professionally stifled.

Elvis began his career as a 19 year old playing guitar & dancing about on stage, in 1954. Singers back then, stood still when singing, so when Elvis moved about like that, young people went crazy for him, but older White people were totally outraged, by what they called his sensual & vulgar gyrating legs & hips. He was just a teenager from a quiet religious background, but he took the world by storm. His parents had been very poor, & he had been raised in a very poor Black community in Tupelo, Mississippi, so as a child who loved music, Elvis was influenced by the Gospel music he heard in the Black church, & the Blues music he heard people singing around him. He fused country, blues & gospel & became the world’s very first superstar, who refused to allow strict segregation laws to separate him from his Black friends, many of whom were also singers. To really get to know Elvis, you should go back to his roots & watch him performing live on television shows, such as Milton Berle & Ed Sullivan Shows, & he also performed on the Frank Sinatra Show after two years in the army in Germany, after being ‘drafted & shafted’ as Elvis would later put it. The authorities thought he would fade away into obscurity, but on his return, the ladies began screaming again. So if you watch some of his live television shows in 1956 & 1957, when he was 21 & 22, you will hear more of a Blues influence in his singing. This 68 Comeback Special, was televised & watched by 42% of America’s population. Elvis had been making movies for 8 years, as the highest paid Hollywood actor, but he was frustrated & fed up with the lightweight movies he was made to do, & when his contract was up, he returned to doing live performances, at the age of 33, & within a very short time, he slipped right back into global superstardom.

There was no special meaning specifically to the black leather suit other than it was sexy & probably reflective more of the blues/rock n roll part of his repertoire. I remember the broadcast vividly .. I was 15 when it aired and he wore a real variety of outfits during the show, including an iconic pure white suit for the closing song IF I CAN DREAM which to this day is my favorite Elvis song, though i do love many others.
