Joan, not Joann, is now 82. I watched a tv interview with her recently, when she sang this song, accompanying herself on the guitar, and she changed the ten years ago to 40 years ago, and at the end she sang "if you're offering me diamonds and rust, I'll take the grammy." Way to go , Joan. Joan Baez is an icon who marked with Dr. Martin Luther King. She's in a class all by herself. Glad to hear you recognize her iconic voice.

I think this was Elvis’ final concert, before passing 8 weeks later at the age of 42. He had been in increasingly poor health since 1974, with a very enlarged heart & other serious medical issues. Some concerts had had to be cancelled, & he did collapse at one concert & was in hospital several times in the lead up to his death. But at this concert, his voice was in absolute top form, & although he was obviously short of breath during some songs at this concert, he managed to deliver stunning vocals. Unchained Melody from this 1977 Live Concert is another great vocal performance, as is How Great Thou Art. Elvis had a deep faith in God, & as sick as he was, he certainly left us on a very high note, which is what he would have wanted. Another great one to React to is You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling in his Live Concert 1970 Las Vegas.

Elvis began his career as a 19 year old playing guitar & dancing about on stage, in 1954. Singers back then, stood still when singing, so when Elvis moved about like that, young people went crazy for him, but older White people were totally outraged, by what they called his sensual & vulgar gyrating legs & hips. He was just a teenager from a quiet religious background, but he took the world by storm. His parents had been very poor, & he had been raised in a very poor Black community in Tupelo, Mississippi, so as a child who loved music, Elvis was influenced by the Gospel music he heard in the Black church, & the Blues music he heard people singing around him. He fused country, blues & gospel & became the world’s very first superstar, who refused to allow strict segregation laws to separate him from his Black friends, many of whom were also singers. To really get to know Elvis, you should go back to his roots & watch him performing live on television shows, such as Milton Berle & Ed Sullivan Shows, & he also performed on the Frank Sinatra Show after two years in the army in Germany, after being ‘drafted & shafted’ as Elvis would later put it. The authorities thought he would fade away into obscurity, but on his return, the ladies began screaming again. So if you watch some of his live television shows in 1956 & 1957, when he was 21 & 22, you will hear more of a Blues influence in his singing. This 68 Comeback Special, was televised & watched by 42% of America’s population. Elvis had been making movies for 8 years, as the highest paid Hollywood actor, but he was frustrated & fed up with the lightweight movies he was made to do, & when his contract was up, he returned to doing live performances, at the age of 33, & within a very short time, he slipped right back into global superstardom.

Jane H commenting … I have seen this performance many times, but I still love watching it. Elvis held a black belt to 8th degree in karate, & he trained daily to keep himself fit, which allowed him to do those stretches with ease, while still singing. He loved to joke about on stage, & the musicians could also joke about with him, including the pianist, Glen, deliberately playing a completely different song to what Elvis had called out, during a performance …. & within seconds Elvis had switched to singing it, & the musicians had swiftly switched to playing it …. But Elvis had the last laugh. The musicians & backup singers were used to Elvis pulling lighthearted pranks on them, & the fans loved it. Great Reaction.

Absolutely stunning performance! Elvis never disappoints. He delivers with a punch & you really feel it. Elvis has always ‘felt’ the music. He made all of his own musical arrangements, & nothing went on, on the stage, that he didn’t know about. Aloha from Hawaii was the first ever live concert to be beamed around the world, to 40 countries, via satellite. I watched it with my wife in New Zealand, & Elvis was just magnificent.

Joan Baez wrote this song from her broken heart with Bob Dylan. Haunting. Her guitar playing is amazing, she wrote the music.

Go down the Elvis rabbit hole. You’ll definitely build respect for his vocal talent, charisma and stage presence. No other reaches the quality as he does. I suggest the range of style and decade span: “Stuck on You” from Frank Sinatra show, BUT someone overlaid the studio recording over the live performance, so must get the live performance. Anytime you see Elvis live it’s a bonus over his spectacular vocalization and range. “ Bossa Nova Baby” from one of his movies, “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” (1970), “Suspicious Minds” (1970), Anything from the ‘68 Comeback Special; “Baby What You Want Me to Do” and “Trying to Get to You@, If I Can Dream” (white suit, tribute to MLK after his and Bobby Kennedy’s assassinations)… it goes on and on, this only scratches the surface.
