Elvis hated being called King, he didn't choose it the media did, and he always said "Jesus is the King". He never bragged he just took everything as it came. He just loved to sing. He never trashed people in public, he might not have liked people but in an interview in New York he said, he would never criticize another performer, that there was room for everybody in the business. great job Seph.

Some of y'all need to stop continuously confusing yourselves with the context of what Elvis stated. Him being called "The King" the world over has absolutely nothing to do with Jesus Christ and everything to do with his mastery of all musical genres and his vocal abilities. Not the same thing by any means. Edit: When Elvis made that statement, he was expressing his shy and humble nature....the adoration and adulation was a bit overwhelming.

This waltz is really lovely and haunting, especially those chorus vocals. (2:48) I love that low piano note just before the first verse vocals. (0:21) And that banjo, lead guitar, and ghostly female vocal that's added to the second verse. (3:46) The instrumentation, backing vocals, and production are all so lush. That's a tremolo effect on the guitar that you highlight in the intro. (0:08) It's a favorite of mine as well. And you're right, it was very reminiscent of the time, but still can be heard today. The Smiths used it to especially good effect on their 1984 classic, "How Soon Is Now?" The lyrical message that another has made one a better person is a powerful one that particularly resonates with me, and has been my experience with respect to you and your channel. Comparing Elvis' voice to finger-licking good melted ice cream on a hot summer's day made me smile and chuckle. (9:35)

So I busted out some earbuds to give the song a closer listen. And what I thought was banjo actually sounds more like piano and guitar playing in unison. I also searched KZbin music for this song and was amazed at the number of artists who have covered it. It really is staggering. More than I could reasonably listen to. Elvis has multiple versions in fact. And of those that I have listened to, Elvis' cover is by far the best version.

@@balovett Well to be honest it's super duper hard to be a hater to someone as lovely as you 🌹 Also, full on honesty: I've only ever listened to the original. In my humble opinion Elvis's version is way better than the original. Then again I may be a bit biased because I prefer male singers overall, and most especially baritone & bass male singers. I love the deeper and richer tones of a solid baritone 😊 There does seem to be a mixed consensus on this one however from first listen I have always personally really liked this one as sung by Elvis. I can't wait for Seph to react to one of my other personal favorites- a song penned by Gordon Lightfoot 😉

Note that Millie Kirkham was replaced by Kathy Westmoreland in September of 1970. I think it was Millie who wanted to leave after working with Elvis for 13 years, as she was pregnant I think. Kathy was just as good if not even more talented than Millie. A beautiful woman who Elvis was rather fond of. 😅 I am not sure which one of them sang on this, but it might as well have been Kathy. This song is also has some beautiful live renditions 😊

The song was written by the fake Indian --Buffy St. Marie. It's a blah song that makes me think of lounge singers doing it. Elvis has done far better songs.

Never cared for this song. Of course Elvis reached his vocal peak (especially for ballads) in the early 60's. This is at a point in Elvis' career when it was difficult for him to sing higher. I like the live versions of this song slightly better. It's ok. Bottom 150 out of his 700+.
