He was such a perfectionist, he listened to the playback to make sure it was what he wanted, before it was put out officially. If you notice he's looking around to make sure everyone else approves too. He did that on stage to, to reassure himself he was doing a good job. It's hard to believe a man of his talent had to be reassured! The guys said he was very insecure, in that way. The first question he asked after a show or concert was how was it?

Well, a little addition there. The song they all were listening was already released out to the public. So no approval was needed from the guys there :) But what really happened here is that they were rehearsing this song to play it live on stage. Originally Elvis recorded the song with other studio musicians than the one gathered there. They needed to learn the song, but also the essence of how Elvis wanted to perform this song on stage. This is the reason why they all were paying attention to the details of the song. By the way, Elvis never enjoyed listening to his own recordings. I guess because of him being so insecure, but for this time he had to make an exception for the sake for the shows that were ahead.
