I'm not sure why people hate this version. This is so fucking awesome. It's really bluesy and the Roots are a phenomenal backing band for Elvis Costello. This would be a great tour package. Elvis Costello and the Roots.

beacause this song is something more. it's about the feelings that some of us exprienced. it's about pain and sadness and losing etc. just watch movie with rachel weisz and hopefully you understand some part of it but if you didnt exprienced this i'm sure not all of this. and this version is just fun for him and the band. and dont get me wrong, it's good performence but song has deeper meaning and for me fiona apple did good job as she understood this. nonetheless it's good version but original(or fiona apple version) it's important part of some people lifes.

I saw him perform this live in the late 80s. It was just Elvis with an electric guitar. Every line he sang had a different nuance. It was the most devastating 20 minutes I've ever experienced. And when he finished, honest to god, the audience was so stunned, no one could even clap. So the comments here--Fiona Apple did it better, and this is him ruining a classic song? It's HIS song, for godssakes. And he's a genius.

I saw him at the Ryman in Nashville Tn in the late 90s. He was only with Steve Nieve and they were on fire. He started this song and stepped away from the mike taking full advantage of the fantastic acoustics of the venue. He belted this song with such emotion that I burst out crying. Everyone was so quiet and afterwards he received the best ovation. This piece like a lot of his songs has many arrangements and is amazing with each one. I have seen him in concert three times and he was a brilliant performer each time...never disappoints. The Roots are so fantastic and innovative, was happy to see this collaboration.

I don’t normally comment but on this occasion- as far as I know this Is not a ‘version’ its his song, he wrote it. Was privileged to see him perform this and much of that album at the Albert Hall London in the mid 80s and it was as spellbinding and chilling there as here, if not more so live. Very few songs written about love snd lust combined that work as well as this, Stu X
