Awesome concert footage as always, David. I agree, I think 1971 was one of Elvis's "forgotten or missed" years. And he had some great songs, "I'm Leaving" is my favorite from that year. And of course, 1971 is when Elvis received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and also received his Jaycee Award ❤ So yes, it was a good year for him! Thanks for this great post, David. ELVIS FOREVER 👑❤️👑

I can’t remember whose book it was in but I remember them saying he always gave an extra special performance when he had a special lady in the audience….judging by that performance I’d say there were several in that audience 😊! Love seeing him so energetic and how fantastic it must have been to actually be there to witness it ….. we can only imagine ☺️Thankyou so much for bringing these little gems to our attention xx

This series is great David. Thank you! I believe there could be many factors that made this season so special and energized. Elvis had not yet gone through the turbulence of the divorce and the very fact that there was not a very intense sequence of tours like in the following years. He wasn't depressed or bored with the tour routine. This lighter situation may have made Elvis more motivated to give more of himself to the shows.

I lived in Baltimore at that time and I was at that concert at the Baltimore Civic Center in 1971. Unbelievably my ticket cost was $7.50. I believe that was the second highest price ticket in the house that night. Although it was a fantastic show, my only disappointment was that it lasted an hour at best. I was only 14 at the time, and I just expected the show to be longer. Maybe 2 hours.

Great video! Regarding why The Imperials stopped performing with Elvis: In the book, The gospel side of Elvis by Joe Moscheo, which I highly recommend reading, he stated that The Imperials originally were payed 1000 dollar/week per person from 1969-71, they would also get payed for the rehearsal time. Those were for the shows, they obviously recorded with him from 1966-1971 (?) In 71 after performing with Elvis for quite some time they figured it was time to renegotiate the contract with a higher salary. The Colonel was a very hard negotiator and wouldn't accept this. At the same time they were performing with Jimmy dean and got an offer to be a part of his television show aswell. That offer just seemed better, and with scheduling they just couldn't make it work with Elvis aswell, so they chose to go with Jimmy.

This was an excellent video for several good reasons other than the fact that Elvis was looking super energetic with lots and lots of movement around the stage! His voice sounded good I think. I personally like it when you are narrating about events that are going on at the time. Especially appreciate it when a good part is going to be coming up, so that we know what to look for and when. And one more point is that you had said that the band members really had to keep their eyes on Elvis so that they could keep in tune with him, really on point about that! Once more, let’s hear it for Ronny Tutt and his fantastic drum playing directly with Elvis 👏🏻! Fantastic fan recording! 🤩❤

David, excellent as always! I LOVE Elvis in 1971..and I always have. You’re so correct, in that ‘71 is overshadowed by TTWII in ‘70 and MSG in ‘72 and Aloha in ‘73 but the music in ‘71 was excellent. “It’s Only Love” is a terrific song, and “I’m Leavin’” is simply my favorite Elvis song of all time. I think it was Boston Garden in ‘71 when he introduced “I’m Leavin’” and then he said, “I’m not gonna sing it, I’m just gonna do it!” 😂. I felt he seemed a little testy, maybe a bit jacked up on speed, throughout the entire Boston Garden ‘71 show, but I loved the concert, especially “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. “Can’t Stop Lovin’ You” as Elvis said it was indeed top notch in ‘71 until really early ‘74 for my money. If you listen to him do the powerful ending of the song in the live Mid South album from March of ‘74 he prefaces the end of the song with “Lord, I dread it”… and then just NAILS it at the end 😂. I also couldn’t agree more that EVERY Elvis fan should read Joyce Bova’s book. It’s simply spell bounding, page after page. 1971 was indeed a great musical year for Elvis. He also recorded my favorite Christmas song of his entitled “I’ll Be Home On Christmas Day”. As always, thanks so much for your insightful work David. As decades long Elvis fans, we all sure appreciate it.

Like you, I enjoy his movements in 1971. He's really into it. However, many of the songs are rushed and Elvis is out of breath and not singing at his best. I think in many ways 1970 gave us the last glimpe of Elvis' beautiful voice from the early 60's. You also noted that Joyce Bova said she was worried about his health. 1971 marks the beginning of seeing the signs of decline. His voice is weak during the May/June recordings, and although he is still thin, he looks worn out and washed out. In 1968-70, we have a lot of footage of Elvis outside riding horses, on the beach, shooting guns etc. I think a lot of his recreation and exercise declined that year in favor long tours and Vegas engagements.

I mentioned before, and I know some fans wouldn't want him to cut back on touring. But could you imagine how much more healthy & more energy Elvis would have had if he quit Vegas & only did a couple tours a year? Also he should have had a more flexible recording contract. At most recording a album once a year, or two. I think that would have helped his career, too, in the 70s. Cause there was too much product out there in the 70s and not all of it was good. And he needed better promoters of his albums/singles. He had hit songs that should have been bigger hits. Sorry for book, but just had this on my mind.

Yes when I was researching his concert tours 71 jumped out as a very frugal year tour wise, thats why he probably why had so much energy ( + Joy been in the audience she'd give a corpse energy lol)as he wasn't as exhausted from his schedule but he still did 2 month engagements at the Hilton=100 shows and one engagement at Lake Tahoe ! Pity he didn't stick to that schedule but he needed the money especially with the amount of tax he paid on top of all his other expenses paying Parker his cut and the touring costs, he apparently had an out going of 500k a month .

Thank you for this video. Yes indeed 1971 was a great Elvis year I read about long ago. Though he never (in any professional way) stepped in front of a movie camera, and there was of course the 1971 RCA Studio B recoding sessions. I have always wondered exactly when The Imperials were exited in favor of The Stamps Quartet (personally I love the recordings with The Imperials) so thank you for enlightening me. Well 1971 was almost certainly Just before his health began to fail Elvis and he was still a young man. Once again thank you my fellow Elvis Fan..

Thanks for watching! I’m glad you liked it. 1971 was a very interesting year for Elvis. Like you said, it was before his health started to fail. Although, he did have that bought with glaucoma. The recordings in the studio didn’t do too well but the tour the latter part of the year was interesting and exceptional. Elvis personal life was also very interesting at this time. Early this year in Vegas a girl almost died from pills. Elvis gave her. She was a fan in Vegas that they pulled from the audience, I thought she was gonna die. Also, Elvis relationship and Joyce Bova.

Funny when you referred to Ron Tutt as “Ron Wood”! I wish I had seen Elvis live in concert. The only thing that I find a bit (for the lack of a better word) annoying is the fact that Elvis’ shows became so routine, concert after concert, the same songs and this went on for years! The Aloha show and the album, “Elvis Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis” are the two best concert albums IMHO.

Yes a wonderful tour David and it is a shame that only one soundboard from the tour (Boston) is available as far as I am aware because the audience recordings are not the best. The best video is from Houston which has a spectacular performance of You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling which when using Boston soundboard and Vegas 70 start and finish is great entertainment. I always wondered why I'm Leavin' wasn't a bigger hit but then Elvis and his career often left me bemused.

Noticed in this footage Elvis isn’t wearing a belt with his white Pinwheel suit in all the performances. Not a big deal, just wondering why

Also, I believe the Imperials stopped touring with Elvis due to a scheduling conflict with another act.

Honestly I don't remember exactly where. It was either in one of Peter Guralnick or Alanna Nash's books on Elvis, most likely. Since Elvis wore eye makeup on stage, Dr. Nick didn't want any of the dye getting into Elvis's eyes.

I’ve noticed this there is a country singer named Eric Church he always wears an performs in mirror sunglasses ! I watched an interview with him they are prescription glasses. He said the stage lights over years burned his retinas an he has to wear glasses all the time now! If you think about it back in the day look at all the lights Elvis was under an all the flashed from cameras in concert a not! I don’t know if this could’ve hurt his eyes but kinda makes you wonder just saying!

It’s been said that Col wanted no recordings or dims in 1971. With TTWII just coming out, and the upcoming Elvis On Tour documentary in the works, I guess the Col felt uf Elvis was out of the spotlight in 1971, the fans would be even more excited about the Elvis On Tour documentary.

I didn’t know that Parker knew about Elvis on tour in 71? I know they postponed a Aloha, because it was too close to the release of Elvos on tour but that is true, the bodyguards would not let anybody film Elvos if they caught him.

@@ElvisistheMan_ they didn’t know the exact date, but he knew Elvis “owed” them one more film. And, with Aloha in the plan, he felt a break would help the on your response. This was on a GK interview with , but I’ll see if I can find it.

I found some Elvis 1971, Vegas on the KZbin music. If you guys haven’t heard it, you need too. It’s amazing. Some of his best music. Some songs it seemed the back up singers were a little too loud, but I just prefer Elvis. Lol.

7:36 Pay extra attention to the leg action. Big Kung Fu fan and I've never seen that exact style of side kick. Elvis was the coolest of (actual) super heroes....down to his own cape/S. What superhero has more than one cape? With all these Elvis movies how about a more fictional one where Elvis is a Karate-fighting worldwide detective/special agent/rock idol! They could call it 'Agent Elvis'. Get Butler or Elordi or somebody with a hint of that Elvis charisma. Like a US 'James Bond' or 'Mack Boland'. Nothing could be cooler than a cool, karate-fighting Elvis, Right? Set in the late 60s early 70s, when elvis met Nixon. He could finally work overseas (in this universe)! I'll call Riley.
