Story goes the first in costume shot was also the reveal of Superman in the movie. The script was just Superman flying over the camera. It should have been a quick, easy scene and they'd all be done by lunch. Christopher Reeve was actually a hang glider pilot, and knew how moving his body would affect the direction of flight. So he gets going towards the cameras and shifts his weight in the harness and created the graceful arc we see in the film. For a moment, there was silence on the set; then everyone burst out cheering, knowing that they were working on something special.

People don't have "superhero fatigue". They have "awful storytelling fatigue". It's no coincidence that the most popular characters and storylines from superhero movies are drawn from comic book plots created decades ago. Once creators wandered away from that template and started telling their own stories the last few years, the contrast in qualitative storytelling became fairly evident. When I collected comics as a kid, the stories were generally written by people that had experienced the Great Depression and WWII. Their message was simple: Everyone can be hero. Around the turn of the century the postmodernists started influencing the industry. And their message was simple: Everyone can be a villain. I feel almost the exact same way about this film as I do Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I like it for what it represents more than the film itself. And both have a far better sequel that replace exposition with "explosition"... :)

Superman didn't "turn the world the other way". Superman fly so fast, that he traveled backwards in time. The visualization of going backwards in time was the planet rotating in reverse. After changing the past, he traveled forward in time again.

This is essentially a sci-fi retelling of the story of Moses (Siegel and Shuster, the creators of Superman, were the sons of Jewish immigrants): Superman escapes death as an infant, just like Moses, and is sent in a spaceship (the equivalent of the wicker basket in the biblical story) to Earth, where he's taken care of by people who are not his biological family (Moses is raised at the court of the Pharaoh) and becomes a savior.

The Superman theme from John Williams IS the greatest Comic Book movie theme. And an interesting Easter egg is Perry White's comment about "in his 40 years on the Job", Clark is the fastest typist he's ever seen, which means Perry started life as a newspaper man in 1938, the year Superman debuted!

And my very favorite genre are the old 50s sci-fi movies. Some people call them ”B” movies, and for sure, some really, really are. LOL! What makes it great is it’s an example of inspiration and that in spite of what is going on in the world, there’s still hope and there are good men in this world. It’s the ultimate expression of nature vs nurture. A man raised to not just do good but be good. While I love Superman Returns and MoS for various reason. There are things they lack. However Superman and Lois probably is the closest to capturing what Superman The Movie is expressed. Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman has similar qualities Reeves Superman. He has a great mix of Reeve and Cavill’s Superman.

Yes. This Exactly. Superhero movies don't have to be crap. They just need to be made with some love and respect for the source material. Superman 1978 is still the definitive movie for the character. Even though it is dated by its time and techniques, it presents a hero who inspires because he does not waver in doing good. Modern Hollywood's two mistakes are poor writing in general and trying to cram modern issues into every movie. They forget that people go to movies to escape modern issues for a few hours. Just give us a Superman who is good and has some of the warmth Christopher Reeve brought to the role. It will make money.

The fatigue is also representative of how studios pile hundreds of millions of dollars and base their entire slot of films (for years) around big summer movies and have done so, in a lopsided fashion, since Jaws. I don't mind that some of these franchises have advanced certain technologies but they do consume too much studio money that would be better spent on multiple smaller films and development of better material. If these big films fail to produce an equally huge profit, they can cripple a studio. A few other things are; the feature film format doesn't really suit certain adaptations and should be released as 10+ episode series, the AWFUL tendency to shoot multiple origin story versions, and contractual obligations with different directors, writers and actors.

I favor Superman II over Superman I. Superman: The Movie did a great job of capturing the story from years gone by. I remember a general stating in '80 he believed Americans were looking for something to cheer about. That was probably the magic of Superman: The Movie.

The first 2 Superman movies back go back make one great long movie. The first is less climactic in my opinion with a dumb ending, but it does a good job introducing the world and the characters. The 2nd is where the stakes are raised and Superman becomes an underdog for the first time ever (or at least for the first time without the use of a rare substance from his home planet). If I had to pick just one between the two, it would be the sequel. I love the three Kryptonian villains who only appeared briefly in the first one. And I prefer the theatrical cut vs. the Donner cut, mainly because I dislike the ending of him spinning the Earth around to reverse time. That being said there are some things from the Donner cut that I did prefer so a hybrid of the two could have been the best version.

They should get Brandon Routh back to do a 6th Donnerverse film with the Braniac script they were going to use for the sequel to "Returns." And cast Terrence Stamp, Jack O'Halleran and Sarah Douglas as the depowered, elderly versions of their former Kryptonian selves who should serve as emotional support to Superman after he is forced to kill his own son in the grand finale of that original script.

Hm. I never thought of what you said about non-Americans understanding Superman better than native-born Americans, although I have heard Superman being a metaphor for the immigrant experience. I think there's a lot of merit to that argument. I saw SUPERMAN when it first came out. I was a kid and it blew me away. I literally obsessed over it, even though I had been raised on the George Reeves TV series (Phyllis Coats is the all-time hottest Lois Lane. Bar none!) It remains one of my favorite movies of all time, although my favorite is the Richard Donner cut of SUPERMAN II. BTW - John Williams rules!

Donner's Superman 2...is the GOAT...in my opinion. When I was a kid, I used to watch the Lester version of Superman 2 (edited for tv)...on vcr.. over and over and over again... but donner's version is several notches better

The movie is a fantasy before Brando speaks; there is a young boy flipping through a comicbook that bleeds into the daily planet globe & intro theme song. Also Dick has stated that the movie is a fantasy by dent of the opening. Sequence.

Christopher Reeve nailed both parts like no other actor has before or since, not even Kirk Alyn and Tyler Hoechlin, although they certainly did better than most. Reeve's performances removed all doubt as to why people wouldn't recognize Clark as Superman and vice versa. The live flying scenes are still impressive, but the composites and projection shots leave something to be desired. Even so they really nailed the spirit of the Superman story.

As for the reflection of the period the movie was made, one must realize that audience tastes are also relative to the historical events of the times as well. As a comicbook reader & fan that was in the theater day one, Superman is a movie. I can acknowledge that it's a product of its time. Constrast Man of steel about the same character post 911, and one gets a different perspective on the character and his world view. Neither is better or worse, just of the time in which it was created. As I comics & scifi consumer, story & character comes first before anything else including brand. Superman Returns was a victim of nostalgia for an American cinematic myth of an interptation of the inspirational & exceptional ideal of. For some, Superman represents national pride in the face of stark realities of the times. For others, the human character matters more. As a kid, I read the comics for the action & adventure. As I got older, the characters became the addition that kept me coming by to the action & adventure. This is a lesson that the studios have forgotten, the art of storytelling. No amount of sfx/ sugar will disguise a poorly told story, especially to a reader. Peace.

They sure don't make them like this anymore. Such a beautiful and epic film, with tremendous scale and heart and the ultimate blueprint for superhero films, which is why it still holds up so well to this day. And Christopher Reeve is the perfect example of why casting the right person in a role is so vital to a film's success. Plus Margot Kidder, she was so beautiful :) The all-important heart and characters in modern superhero films are now substituted with choppy editing of big effect sequences and superficial spectacle, and they are mainly used as a vehicle to push an agenda onto the audience. Which is why so many of them fail :)

I liked "The Marvels" ok. BIG fan of "Superman: The Movie." The 3 hour, 8 minute cut of "Superman: The Movie" is my favorite version which Warner Brothers released on Blu Ray in Widescreen cinemascope in 2017 (not streaming). There is more John Williams music and more action scenes in the 3 hour "Long TV Version."

Superman, historically , has been SUCH A GREAT STORY. That is why its such a crime that modern moron producers and directors HAVE RUINED the modern Superman story, and in the modern comic books, its even worst. They have made Superman, sometimes dark, sometimes Gay, and sometimes, self doubting and weak. We will have to see what the future does. ONE OF THE BEST TV SHOWS for Superman/superboy was SMALLVILLE. But yes, Christopher Reeve's superman stories were great. Nothing...NOTHING...to this day....matches it. Nothing. MAYBE...maybe Cavill, but that is about it.

I liked your work on this video. I just wanted to say that, in my opinion, it's quite wrong to think that Superman is the model of the perfect American. I know the character was created in different conditions, and it was a good thing for the country to make it a symbol. Superman today is a symbol of hope in many parts of the world and nobody but the americans still view Superman as an american. Donner/ Chris Reeve Superman is not american. He's human. That's his peak adaptation in any support. Donner really gave us the best superhero movie. I can't wait to see Gunn's take on Superman ( i love (more or less) every iterations anyway ) but they can't make a better Superman movie than Superman: The Movie ! Just that title sales everything.

You and I definately DON'T agree on the notion of "foreign directors and filmmakers get/understand Superman better than American filmmakers". The only reason Superman: The Movie was a success and STILL stands head and shoulders above all Superman properties after it, is because Mankiewicsz and Donner worked on it. Richard Lester and the Salkinds screwed the second one up, by going back to The Newman's to rescript enough to give Lester Directing credit, and take Brando out. Having a foreign director is why Terrence Stamp hammed it up, when his original sequel material for II was darker, and more in line with the first, and why the hicks in Houston were like Warner Bros cartoon characters. That was done because of Lester and his viewpoint of Americans, wheras the Kents in the first movie were how an American development team see the mid-west. There was no Houston stuff in the original plan, and Lester's Houston pieces were only utilized at a minimum in the Donner Cut of II, as a means of bridging the story to complete the cut, since they couldn't film anything new, due to budget for it's DVD/Blu-Ray release. I get that you put the disclaimer for this, as being an unpopular opinion, but that doesn't mean it's not a wrong one. The proper way to state it is that "YOU feel that foreign directors get/understand Superman better", because I don't have to imagine you're a voice crying in the wilderness. I've never met anyone who feels that way, your logic used to support this is a stretch, and even other youtubers from England and Australia such as Oliver Harper and Minty Comedic Arts agree that the first was the best because of Donner. As for this NOT being a fantasy, the Power of the Subtext is NOT with you. John Williams even said in relation to the reason why no other Superman would ever come close to Superman: The Movie, was because the movie was fun, and theatrical but didn't take itself too seriously. He called it "theatrical camp" because it was tongue-in-cheek. But it was done with the right mix, without stupidity. Superman has ALWAYS been a mix of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, and the notion that someone would take Brando's line as being dead serious and NOT the same motif as the opening credits of Star Wars where you read the words, "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away . . . ", shows how dense they are. It prepares people to suspend disbelief, because they ARE about to watch a fantasy . . . you SCHMUCK. 🤷‍♂️

The following Superman movies (the Reeve Superman movies after Superman 2 were simply duds) didn’t quite work because a Superman movie always needs a charismatic, iconic and legendary actor to play that role that’s basically a comic book/cartoon persona come to life. Christopher Reeve was that guy. Brandon Routh Superman was mediocre because it was basically a rehash of Superman 1, but was the first ever Superman live action iteration where the effects have improved by lightyears. Henry Cavill didn’t quite reach that level as his origins story was butchered with penis pods and an overly emo man of steel, a - let’s face it - lackluster theme that I can’t even get myself to warm up to it no matter how much I tried, and lines like “I just think he’s kinda hot”. And him not even trying anything to save his father… I don’t have any idea why people thought snyder’s version was any good, the only saving grace of the Snyder movies was the special effects. James gunn’s version is going to turn out to be mediocre, as sure as I’m sitting here he’s going to botch it, and he already botched it by his choice to play Superman. If the franchise can be saved, they need to get a good director, good writers who know and will respect/revere the source material, and cast Alan Ritchson as the next Superman in a movie with a great story, unafraid to explore patriotic themes that made the Superman franchise beloved (truth, justice and the AMERICAN way). Alan Ritchson is charismatic and given a good director, good writers and good script who revere/respect the source material, he will reach the level of icon status Christopher Reeve reached playing the original Superman for that generation.

Truth be told it’s not uncommon for Non Americans/American Immigrants to direct better American movies than Native born Americans. Paul Verhoeven who is Dutch, directed ROBOCOP. Jan De Bont, another Dutch, Directed “Speed” and was Director of Photography for “Die Hard”. Legendary film Director Michael Curtis (born Mano Kaminer in Hungary) directed “Yankee Doodle Dandy”. Plus we often forget that legendary Dracula actor Bella Lugosi is Hungarian. Gene Simmons and Natalie Portman were born in Israel, and the Van Halen brothers were also born in the Netherlands.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on one point. Superman, like Captain America embody truths, morals and Ethics that are valued almost the world over. I *_will_* give you the immigrant point, however. Excellent video, by the way.

Superman was a disappointment for me. Lex Luthor wasn't the threat he could have been. Was his scheme all he could come up with. Gene Hackman underperformed. The go back in time thing was too easy. Not to mention create a butt load of paradoxes. The sequel was much better.

Superhero fatigue isn't real. What IS real is woke movies. That's where the fatigue comes in. I haven't watched a superhero movie in years because of the woke B.S. in them. Now if they were to make a superhero movie without the woke agenda then I would go see it.

While the content you presented was entertaining, it's just another rehash of what we have heard many, many times before, which makes your video content moot. Also, I don't see how your video presents superhero fatigue. Now if you presented several films that followed Superman and compared them to the superhero movies made today, and how there are just too many, then your statement of superhero fatigue would have made sense. I would only say that you only touch on it lightly toward the end which again is a moot argument.

I still do not understand the appeal of Superhero Films .I didn't buy the comics, neither did my friends. Having said that, we did see Superman I & II at the cinema when they were released in the UK. (Released, or should that be escaped?). Honestly, I enjoyed Superman - The Move. Soups II was fine. I had my fill of seeing anymore of this stuff with Richard Prior !III. I am hoping that the current run of Films is coming to an end. I know that fans love this stuff. By all means, fill your boots. They just aren't for me.
