E mals much lighter than the steam system, and requires much less energy. It's acceleration curve causes less wear and tear on aircraft as well.

@@airboyd It's really galling that those things still can't launch full combat loads, can't be replaced with a steam catapult, and we're still building more of the things despite this! Meanwhile, we're bleeding out NCOs and barracks all have black mold so thick it looks like wallpaper! American military procurement is an entirely corrupt system.

Not on the Kennedy though. The testing vids from a decade ago was on the Ford, which is currently deployed with what I’m at least relatively sure is a fully functioning emals .

@@99kitfox No, it's not. The emals on the Ford is definitely not fully functional. It can launch planes and the AAG can recover them, sure. What it still can't do is launch a fully fueled aircraft with a full combat load of ordinance. Considering it's a warship and combat aircraft are its primary weapons system, this is an existential problem. You have the impression that the EMALS on Ford is fully functional because of a bunch of weasel-worded statements by admirals and contractors that lead you to believe that. The launch system was simply designated operational despite not being able to launch aircraft in a full combat configuration. But because it can technically launch an aircraft, albeit half fueled and with only two AAM on board, they can say it's operational. And most journalists don't have the technical knowledge or will to risk their access to ask the pointed follow-up question if they can launch full combat loads.
