It can be a good thing, the issue is that no one can really agrea on what "organic farming" means. They can technicaly use all sorts of stuff and still be labeled as organic, farmers can still use pesticides and fertilizers, and while neither of those will have an effect on people as long as the product is washed before consumption, it harms the environment and the people who have to work with those materials. Organic farming statysticaly also uses more land than conventional farming. It's difficult to make something that is purely good, but we're getting there.

The question is how many decades we can still feed the world population in this way.

I'm a genetic student and I keep coming across alot of troubling things about monsanto but I find it so hard to explain it to people without being seen as a tree hugger. I’ve lived in St. Louis my entire life and we definitely have a dark history of chemical production. These companies would take advantage of people who needed jobs to support their families. They knew they were exposing their workers to caustic chemicals. The government even conducted top secret tests by spraying radioactive zinc cadmium sulfide all over bystanders in low income/minority neighborhoods. Not to mention illegal dumping of radioactive waste in cold water creek. The St. Louis metropolitan area is an ecological nightmare. I actually work in the former DOW chemical building where they’d process uranium metal rod for the Manhattan project. The EPA claims everything is safe but i find it very hard to believe. I’ve heard rumors that they still test pigeon feces in the building to monitor radiation levels. Needless to say, I’ll probably end up with some kind of bizarre cancer.....

Personally I have always equated Mosanto and his subsidies as poisoned products leading to a slow and hurtful death. Great episode. Thought I read once that the Monsanto v. family owned type farm actually played out. The story goes, somewhere in Georgia Monsanto had a large test farm and adjacent to that was a modest family owned farm. Some of the crop on the family farm allegedly was cross pollinated with the Monsanto GMO. Monsanto sued for pretty substantial damages, tied the guy up in Court for years.

unfortunately, its hard for farmers to avoid using Monsanto's roundup, and seed, there is not much we can do, you cant find mass produced seeds that arent Monsanto, if you wanted to grow your own seed, it takes years to turn a profit, and even then non gmo corn is small and less desirable

That case where the seeds were blown from one farm to another was actually not true. That was just the claim of the defendant which was proven false. Farmers tend not to replant seeds anyway. Herbicides tend to be less harmful than pesticides.

Instead of vilifying glyphosate it would have been cool to mentioned that Round Up replaced LOTS of much more toxic product and that the move to HT - herbicide tolerant crops have enabled farmers to rapidly adopt min or zero tillage on their farms. You also passed over Bt crops which have dramatically REDUCED INSECTICIDES. The history was interesting. Your tone and context was far from un-biased. still nicely done.

Round up didn't replace more toxic herbicides except in a limited way. Instead, it generated prophylactic use of Roundup - increasing use by volume to 300 million pounds last year. While not as toxic, this has been detrimental to soil health, amphibians, etc - and - since our exposure through diet and drinking water has increased 1000% in recent years (as shown in urinalysis), whatever toxicity it does have is affecting us all (liver, and likely also kidney and probably carcinogen). Finally, as scientists warned, this ramped-up usage has created resistant weeds. Monsanto came out with dicamba-resistant soy a couple of years ago (one of those older and more toxic pesticides you mentioned). Monsanto warned farmers not to use the soy with dicamba until they'd developed a formulation that was not volatile (vaporizing and killing plants miles away). The scientists warned Monsanto that the old dicamba would be used if they released dicamba-tolerant soy. But Monsanto released it anyway, and in 2017, three million acres of non-dicamba-resistant crops, fruit trees and other plant life was killed when farmers illegally used the older formulations. Additional acreage was killed last year. I agree that there were some mistakes in the video, but Monsanto remains a company that puts profits ahead of people. And regarding bt - there is a story here that needs to be told as well, regarding the nature of the Cry proteins in bt crops. I will just say for now that, the Cry proteins ARE insecticides. That's why they're killing bugs. Only now, instead of being used in response to need, they too are used prophylactic. Every cell in very bt crop, from tassel to root, is continually producing pesticides throughout its growth cycle. And those insecticides are different in structure and more potent that naturally occurring bt proteins. No, we didn't reduce pesticide use - we simply made it more convenient. And resistant bugs, just like resistant weeds, are showing up. Finally, I will let you go. Thank you if you've read my comment. Lastly I will just say: no-till cropping doesn't require glyphosate, but again, it's made much easier with the ability to spray roundup on all your acreage. Thank you
