Gal is right there, that to me is similar to someone getting in the way of a kick chase from the defending team, you can’t just stop right in front of the opposition team defending. If that was a high kick and someone got in the way of the chasing team that would be a penalty

There is one rule I know about refereeing above literally all other rules. “Referees cannot rule on intent” Gus can scream about what his intent was until he’s blue in the face. The ref doesn’t make a call wondering what the player is thinking. It’s not fair. If they do then every player will say “I was gonna make it, I was running there.” It’s the dumbest argument ever. That’s like arguing a drunk driver isn’t at fault because “I didn’t mean to crash into that building.”

Similar to the argument I made in another comment. I think this is one rule that needs a black and white interpretation. Moretti can simply say he stopped because the player was in front of him. If you actually listen to what Gould's argument, he doesn't actually have one. He just doesn't like it and thinks Moretti had no intent or effort, which completely misses the point. A lot of Gould's points are like this. He doesn't argue correctness, he argues what he'd like to see. I remember in the earlier video ref days, he'd argue about a try being taken away because essentially it's a good looking try. The video ref would scrutinise a grounding and he'd say something to the effect of, if you slow it down enough you'll find separation. Sorry, but if someone is holding a ball and they haven't dropped it, no matter how much you slow it down, there will be no separation. If there is, they have dropped it or don't have it.

I don’t know if the call was embarrassing, but it was wrong. Even if Jake should have continued his run,it’s irrelevant if the defender is making no effort. Chooks supporter. No dog in this fight.

It's the other way around . The call was right as he stopped in the line. The effort level of the defender could be considered embarrassing, but it's also irrelevant. The rdecision was based on whether the attacker stopped in the line, not how much effort the defender put in. What effort rating does he need to achieve to activate the rule? 7 or 8 out of 10? And how would you go about rating the level of effort?

I would love to know what percentage of Try’s are actually given. You can’t celebrate as a fan until you see the try confirmed on the screen. The obstruction rule is out of control. Only last week players were running into referees. The new rules are shocking.

Gal is fighting about the legitimacy of the decision whereas Gus is fighting for the rules to be changed… Simple, is it too hard to ask for a proper bunker enforced rule so defenders (Moretti) can’t just run into attackers on purpose (Jake) with no intention of going to the ballplayer/ball (Turbo). keep it up Gus, trying to make the game better for us (the rest are fools) 🤣🤣

The defender didn't even try to make a tackle, he wasn't in any way impeded. Gus was right. The rule needs to be simplified to a simple fact of if someone was making an attempt and gets denied, the defender wasn't even close to making an attempt and would not have made the tackle anyway. Stopping in the line should only apply if the defender was actually blocked. But he wasn't.

It happens in every game so why the controversy.Its the same as the new rule about players in front of the kicker.There are players in front of the kicker in every game,and they get involved in the play.If the NRL would just stop making up new rules the game would be fine.They make a new rule police it for 9 or 10 games then it’s forgotten about.

Everyone's making such a big deal about it because it impacted the result, but we see this rule applied regularly and people usually accept it. He stopped in the line, a hole opened up, whether or not the defender would have made the tackle or not is irrelevant. He would have been a step or 2 closer and who knows what could have happened.

I've got a conspiracy theory . . . The nrl wants Gus off TV now he's in clubland. This show has been pushed back to past 10pm on TV. If you go looking for it on streaming = nothing! Not even in the dedicated NRL section. You can only find it by directly searching for it.

This is similar to players feigning injury to get the video ref to make the decision. Not a good decision, agree with Gus. Rules can be viewed on with common sense. If Gal had his way regarding the Rules there wouldn’t be a game as there are so many not playing the ball correctly in every game. Those are breaking the rules too.

This is one rule I do want to see a black and white interpretation of. If we are going to start judging intent and effort levels of the defensive players an even greater can of worms will be opened. Players know they can't stop in the line. Even if Moretti did make the "required effort", would his path have been impeded? Arguably yes. Maybe Moretti saw his path impeded and thought he couldn't get through so he stopped. I don't think that is what happened, but he could argue it. What I do know is the attacking player was where he shouldn't be. It's the same thing with running behind a teammate and then passing it. Sometimes, for whatever reason this is let go. And sometimes I would say no-one is actually impeded, but if you've done it, I think it should be penalised every time.

Gal says that he is happy with the rule being black and white because each video ref's interpretation would be different. Then he points out 2 instances in 2 weeks where 1 player ran the inside shoulder and got penalised for it and Jake doesn't run the inside shoulder and got penalised as well. Yeah the obstruction rule and its interpretation is working brilliantly 👍

Big issue with this is its clear cut parra player isn't looking to defend the play he is looking for the penalty eyes only for the attacking player with out ball. That kind of crap play shouldnt be rewarded. If trebjovic doesnt stop and old mate speeds up to run into him is that also a penalty or taken with out the ball?

they are both correct. but gal wins because as he said thats the rules and the easiest call to make. jake has done this in multiple games over the years in his careers. as gal stated he should've done his job and run through the line as they are told and taught too. the bunker used this to rule a no try due to the blatant forward pass from turbo. gal mentions refs interpretations and that's the problem, the rules are black and white, if the refs cant ref a game to the letter of the law they shouldn't be doing that job on the field or the bunker.

Gal is 100% correct. What Gus isn't saying is that ref's and video refs are gutless to call out players who milk penalties this was prime example👌. There's an international rugby referee who has no problems pulling up players who try to milk penalties.

All just a cover for the forward pass that was let go on field, plain and simple. Video refs can't call on forward passes so they'll go looking for any ridiculous tiny little thing they can use to ping them for instead.

He stopped in the line. It’s a black and white penalty. Is it right? Probably not, but that’s not the bunkers fault, their job is to give rulings based on the laws and the law says you can’t stop in the line. Gus is just wrong here. Take it up with the NRL or whoever makes the rules, don’t criticise anyone else. Players play within the framework that they’re given.

It is NOT black & white. It comes down to interpretation of the rule. Gal is wrong and should shut up. I HATE Manly, but this was a try in my opinion. Jake hadn't even run past the line of the ruck so how did Jake run past the so called "line"? But here then begs another question, did Jake actually "stop" or was he stopped because he was still moving at the time he was "touched" by the defender. This is where it is adjudicated on interpretation. This is where common sense needs to prevail. There is NO black & white at all. Every rule is always interpretation. Just the same as Luai should've been sent off for tripping. In the "Rule Book, "tripping" is a send off offence!!

Let's also completely ignore the forward pass in there, but honestly, if players are going to make zero effort like that, rules like this shouldn't be applied. If he made ANY attempt to make a tackle, to get into position, to prevent the break, yeah, sure, call the penalty. If they are just going to sit there, grab the opposition player to make it look worse, and then not even make a half hearted nothing attempt to get back into the play, then it's entirely on them, not the player they bro-hugged in order to get a penalty.....

The modern game is a joke...unwatchable. Spend a few weeks watching classic games from 70's and 80's and remind yourself why rugby WAS the greatest game. I watch these games and turn off half way through. Totally boring, homogenised and ruined by stoppages, ridiculous rules and irritation, long-winded bunker decisions.

Here’s an idea . Go back to refing the GAME rather than the rule book. Each game is unique and there should be no hard and fast rules. Each play should be adjudicated on its merits , not on some strictly formulated preconception. Why on earth would our game even attempt to nullify magnificent open field running and passages of play like this ??? Aside from remuneration, it’s this sort of play , backed up by liberal interpretations of ‘rules’ that , initially encouraged , and further entrenched a clear line of demarcation , between league and union football. What union purists love about their game is rules and the adherence to them. What sucks about union is the overarching rules , and the insistence in there strict adherence. Ref the fuckn game, with the rules as a guide not a moral fuckn imperative.
