Interesting but I don't think the vest is very fair. If you could add 20kg to the bike it would be better. Jockeys get weight added to the saddle not themselves in horse racing

Watched your channel for 1 week and THANK YOU for enlighten me..... I am 64 and been biking for 57 of them but last year I got osteoarthritis in my knees. I live in Cornwall and yes, it's hilly so I had to stop going on my bike for any length of time. Been sneezing at e-bikes until I discovered your channel. Yesterday I bought a CUBE Stereo e-bike and WOW I am so happy. Been out for 4 hours today and coped well. Thank you again, you are the source that got me out on a bike again. My life is complete again

Nice one, tried one today for the first time at Cardingham on the Demo day, eye opener for sure. As I'm not the fittest, and I've not done any decent ride for 3 months anyway it let me ejoy the trail rather than blow myself out on the climbs with nothing left for the runs. For now I can keep working on my fitness but I'd not be turning my nose up at one in the future when the climbs stop making the rest worth it.

I'm with Olly, he became a 97kg rider with the muscles / fitness of a 77kg rider. If he was 97kg most of it would become muscle to carry the weight. He was bloody entertaining and honest though. Why not get two blokes the same weight but differing ability next time???? Either way keep en coming as they make you think.

It's hard to know what to do with these results really. Definitely it would have been helpful to have a baseline of Steve vs Olly with no vest on (and ideally on the same bike). I think Olly is awesome and he was a great sport to getting flogged by the 'old man' but maybe it would have been more helpful (informative) to have two riders of the same weight/fitness with one donning the vest to represent an over-weight, unfit person?

I ride with a mate who is the same age (58), he is 10k's heavier but allot fitter. On our previous non- ebikes, he was always waiting for me at the top of climbs. We now ride Levos, he is dialled in at 20% assist, I am at 40% and we stick together - we keep riding, no waiting, no stopping. This is where the 'leveller' is for us.

That’s a great way to use an Ebike! Everybody uses the system to get to equal power levels is an amazing idea! But the usual case sadly is that everybody just sets it to turbo and that’s it.. Such an enjoyable video!! I'm 69 years old and I'm on my Cube cross ebike everyday, mostly on rough mountain roads and trails. I can do the climbs fantastically but am still having trouble with descents on roads and trails with loose gravel and rock. After each ride I feel great from the exertion. The ebike has opened up a whole new world of biking pleasure. If you are active at 30 you will be active at 70.

I Absolutely love the e boost. In my youth I road my bikes on the pavement. At around 50 I parked the motorcycle and road bike, to many friends aren't with us anymore. I also built a at the time a top spec mountain bike all xtr group and hit the trails here in California & Nevada. I still try to stay off the pavement. I've been really enjoying your series. I agree with the non functional mass comment, and as a heavier rider, i'm more used to pushing my bodyweight. i think it might actually be a fairer test if the weight was added to the bike. that way the lighter persons muscles can work unhindered. If you've ever tried bikepacking, first time you do it with a backpack, you don't do that again. it's much much easier if the weight is on the bike. So maybe not strap all the weight to the bike but spread it out more. but i think it is unfair strap a dead mass to a lighter rider, it think maybe also unfair to strap it all to the bike too mind, maybe 50:50? Dunno, tricky problem to level the field.
@tamasvarga676 жыл бұрын
It looks tricky at first but actually, it is very simple. It's power to weight ratio and equalizing the weights does not 'level the field' but puts the lighter rider in disadvantage especially when the difference is ~20kg. The added weight to the lighter rider significantly reduces his power to weight ratio and we could see the result in the video. If they had equal power to weight ratio then depending on the exact amount 4-5kg added weight to Olly would have equalized their weight difference without putting any of them in a disadvantage. They just have to 'do the math' before doing the test.
@Aljonone16 жыл бұрын
Well extra weight added to the bike has a big affect on how the bike handles, when you ride difficult trails, but this depends on how much you through the bike around, not make much difference riding fire roads
@michaeldahm2145 жыл бұрын

That's unfair weight. People developed muscle over time to accommodate for their weight. If Olly wore that vest for 2 years I think it would have been a fair challenge. That's like putting a vest on a feather weight boxer and throwing him in the ring with a heavyweight, the outcome is the featherweight is going to hit the floor even harder.

I really enjoyed this video, Thanks and great effort as always. I think the issue with the added weight is Olly is use to carrying/training at his weight so when the extra weight is added its something his legs are not use to. I think trying to level the playing field is a very complicated issue and this is the main reason I feel EMtb racing (i would love to see more of this) would be biased to 70kg (ish with the appropriate fitness level) riders. Thanks again from an ageing mtber saving for a emtb
@stevemansfield95826 жыл бұрын
Olly is right here on a number of reasons. You increased his weight by 20kg but his muscles are used to coping with his own body weight. Secondly, e-bikes are soooo much faster over the rough stuff!! My Haibike Nduro gives me so much more rolling confidence when it gets rough. Keep the wheels on the ground and they won’t let you down. Great vid, and get Olly on the embn team!!!
@rrobotman6 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed this and has given me food for thought. I too think that Ollie was essentially a fit 72kg rider now with an extra 26kg and without the fitness a rider would normally have being at that riding weight. Steve was really close for this type of challenge on the downhills so the difference in in the climbing and a rider who trained and ran normally at that weight had a big advantage.

the RIGHT question if you want to know if E-Bikes are good levellers is: Would it be better or worse to do it with those weights on normal bike rather then it is on e-bike? I wouldnt rly focus on times when someone gains 25kg of dead weight in seconds which was like 1/3 of his actual weight btw agains person that is used to hiss body mass and is trained by it.

Hi guys, i'm seriously struggling to decide between a Haibike DH and a Kenevo. Either would be XL size, but my biggest worry is the saddle height on the XL Kenevo. Even at lowest drop with a different, lower profile dropper post it looks like i'm not going to be able to get it low enough. If you or anyone has any advice regarding this issue i'd be grateful as there are no shops anywhere even remotely close to me has any in stock to try out. Thanks.

Well, it's really important to get the saddle height right, so if you're not able to get that low enough, maybe the Kenevo isn't for you?

Superb video. But are we get mixed up with the power to weight ratio. Does someone who weighs 13stone have the leg muscle to add an extra 3stone to even it up with someone who weighs 16stone? The guy with 16stone carries that weight all day long so his muscles are use to that weight?
@RichardWoodward6 жыл бұрын
That's going to be the Interesting question to answer. I'm 105kg, not all fat though, and at 50 years old I can cream people half my age on loops riding my ebike even using eco mode only. The bike is twice the weight of their none ebikes and they keep accusing me of using turbo even though I honestly don't. There's more to this than any of us realise and it's going to be Interesting to see the results from more challenges over the coming months.
@tamasvarga676 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's all about power to weight ratio... If they have the same (~5W/kg) and you add extra weight to the lighter rider then his power will stay the same at higher weight so his power to weight ratio drops and he will be slower - as we could see it in the video.
@magpie77916 жыл бұрын

Same here but if I've got motor assist I may as well go 170 and the Sam2. I ride in the Lakes also and quite like the idea of doing big fell rides with 170. I can do the rides unassisted but looking for something that adds variety to my riding.. don't really care about the naysayers as it's my choice and none of their business imo. Dual battery is a game changer.

Steve walks around all day every day with his bodyweight, meaning that his muscles, nervous system, and balance are all prefectly accommodated to it. Steve also seems to be taller, so his extra weight on Ollie isn't just extra fat, it's bone and muscle. Ollie suddenly gained an extra 20kg of weight, all of which was nonfunctional, and was centered on his torso. His muscles and nervous system aren't at all accommodated to that, and the weight shifted his center of mass significantly upward, which affects balance.
@_Jake.From.Statefarm_2 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old comment, but I think the idea of the video was to show that any added weight even if it's dead weight doesn't mean the bike will just pull you up the hill without any effort as a lot of people think (at least at this point in time when the video was made) Ollie def would have smoked him without it, no doubt. That would be the same though on a regular bike.. I'd say that heavier riders have a much harder time, even with functional weight, climbing.. For obvious reasons. The ebike helps take that weight off but you still gotta power it up the hill. Lighter riders will have a much easier time on an emtb than a heavier rider. Same as a regular bike.. but it does show that it's not like a moto where you just pack up 100lbs of supplies on the back and power up a hill. It does have to go through your own power output.

You increased a riders weight by 25%, of dead weight. If you did the same thing to the bike you wouldn't expect to see a 25% performance reduction, it would be greater because you haven't uprated the battery. Same thing, lighter the rider to start off with the more they give away in potential power output simply because of less muscle mass. Also, the big fella has longer levers (legs), which are a massive advantage in any task involving effort (moving a lump uphill) you didn't increase those on O-Dubz either.

From riding with a variety of riders, some of whom sue weight vests for training. We have concluded that as a rule of thumb, HALF of a weight differential is functional and half is dead weight. So to equalize riders with a 20 kilo differential you have to add 10 kilos to the lighter rider.

Great video and interesting stuff but Steve, you mentioned power to weight ratio but then only measured weight, not your individual power. You could do with measuring both of your max 20 or 10 sec power and FTP. I'm sure it would show Olly's power to weight was lower.
@CPcyclist6 жыл бұрын
It is called power to weight ratio. Olly with the weight was at a disadvantage because his power was not taken into consideration to determine the weight needs to have the same ratio as Jones. Jones is 100kg an puts out 700W its 7W/kg while Olly starts at 75kg and 600W or 8W/kg. When the weight is just add to equalize with Jone at 100kg, Olly is reduced to 6W/kg. this gives the clear advantage to Jones on the climbs. Just look to the Tour riders sprinters have a higher peak watt output then climbers but the time gaps from the best climber the best sprinter can be massive on the hilltop finishes.
@bugboy1520006 жыл бұрын
#EMBN this has me thinking that Ebikes are not to make the ride easier. You can certainly punch up climbs with the assist but seems there is no substitute for a good aerobic engine. But have you sparked (pun intended) a new training regimen? Could you increase your watts to the pedals by riding weighted?
@JayGee69965 жыл бұрын
Great sport Olly. My analysis is that the weight added to Olly basically reduced his p:w, if you add weight but no power then the overall output is going to be lower, plus his body was consuming power/energy carrying the weight all in one place instead of little bits all over his body

My roughly 60 yo dad is fitter than me and im considered fit by most people i know, when it comes to mountainbiking. Im not speaking for myself as i am about twenty yo and therefore not concerned with aging but i guess most people neglect their bodies due to work being stressful or the I am to old for this mentality. So to the older people among us: Don't give up (on your fitness). If you think your best days are over just because you are 40+ you will most often be surprised what you can still do if you find the time to ride.

Wonderful video! The fun exuded by the two videographers/athletes was riveting. I would weigh in on your discussion of handicap that: the same weight would not have the same effect if loaded to the bike (ie panniers or even as a diving weigh lead shot) I proposes this because of the lung compression of the vest and the backpack straps. I will speculate there is an increase handicap to the lighter rider as well that gives him an excessive handicap because of the ratio of the penalty which disproportionately penalizes a lighter human frame (ie a 50kg ridder with 40kg added might never finish ) I certainly hope someone paid for that young man dinner after he was such a heroically good sport.

Hey Ollie....in Australia, me and the boys call that 'I'm going to chuck' moment a BROSIE (Troy Brosnan) moment. Long story short...trying to catch Troy when training in Cairns for World DH Champs 2017..... got the autograph...but was chucking in the bushes after busting a$$ to catch the lad! Now we have 'BROSIE' moments! 👍

doesnt work like that. he might be heavier now BUT his muscles are only use to pushing 77KG. Steve being his weight is used to that weight. If u made steve suddenly 77KG he will fly cause his legs are only use to push 97KG

Yeah, Olly's comment about functional weight is spot on. That vest and backpack are pure dead weight for him. And don't forget it's over 25% of his body weight that was suddenly added to him. Still a great challenge though, who would have thought I'd get into the EMBN channel? Given that I turned 50 in January perhaps I should start watching more? Nah, don't think so :)

Mainz Man and he is not conditioned to that amount of weight no wonder he wanted to puke. Lungs heart and legs could only push 77kg
@fromxctoletssee6 жыл бұрын
how long where u at 82kg compared to being 95kg. again its all about conditioning. thats lungs heart and muscle. if you were 82kg most of your life then i will make sense that u do better because you been at that weight for longer. but now you are 95kg and only a short while compared to being 85kg. but again the science doesnt always apply to everyone.

Ah i see ok. u see being heavy your lungs heart and muscles are conditioned for that weight. by losing that weight you didnt lose that conditioning. thats why being lighter and your body being use to carry the heavy weight helps you now in your cycling. Its like a weightlifter lifting 100kg all the time and now get told to lift 50kg. he will feel like there is nothing to it. the best thing i have done was to lose weight. i feel better for it. try get back there you wont regret it.

I'M 53 and weigh 78kg your definition on 50 year olds is a joke, not all of us are fat arse beer drinkers who need or want ebikes to get around the hills or roads. I agree ebikes can be a real benift but just using an arbitrary age is frankly miopic.

To see if emtbs are a good leveller Olly and Steve should ride together with Olly on a carbon ‘analogue’ bike and Steve on a reasonably priced emtb only in eco mode!

First, thank you for the entertaining and well presented video! One thing to consider is that you are comparing two fit individuals who already mountain bike. Consider though if the older person has not maintained the same level of fitness from his youth. If a younger guy is able to maintain his fitness level as he got older, a percentage of the additional weight certainly would be "functional" as he put it, but not all of it. Depending on his fitness level at age 50, he likely could see only 50% of that weight actually be in muscle mass. For someone who is NOT BIKING AT ALL at age 50 that percentage contributing to being able to push the bike is likely far less. Distribution of the "dead weight" also has a factor on its effect on the rider. I think the true "power" of an ebike is not measured in watt hours. An ebike may motivate someone who is not biking at all or who is otherwise less active in their older years to pick up the sport, raising his level of activity dramatically when compared to near zero if he was not active before.

When will the manufacturers suss out that regeneration breaking is a thing! For long down hills where speed needs to be controlled link regeneration to break lever initial pull! Then batteries will last longer.

You said it yourself. Power to weight ratio. Your extra 20 kilos are affording you more useful power. He was exactly right that adding that was only dead weight. There’s going to be no way to do that predictably.

Sorry Steve but I am over 50 & yes I use an e bike, but still weight the same weight as I did when I was 20, but glad to see Olly doing OK after doing a Claudio at Fort William world cup

This one had me thinking. Olly was probably dead on with his thought on the extra dead mass. Not only is his body muscled for 77 kg but so is his entire frame. I actually think a fall or a a bad jump with that extra weight might put too much stress on joints for example. Olly probably isn´t used to the Kenevo otherwise I feel it would be a more level playingfield with the same bikemodels. The Shimano Steps is a slightly more compact motor if I remember you earlier videos about motors. Would the Shimanos 70 Nm torque leave a weaker assistance uphill than the Kenevos 90 Nm of torque? I don´t know but I´m curious about it. Those are things I was considering before buying my own e-bike. Anyway, yet another entertaining video, Great job!

It's probably why he didn't wear it when doing downhill. Not sure if the torque rating would make as much of a difference as the power delivery. But spot on about the dead mass.

Reckon that vest would restrict your breathing a fair bit. Probly played a bit of a role in the result.
