Do you prefer riding uphill or downhill on your e-MTB?

I actually like uphill more, because it has (to me) a lesser chance of bigger crashes. And thanks to my eMTB, being almost 60, I can even talk a bit of shop with you on this. If I lose momentum, I just need to remember to get the bike in a position that I'm not going to tumble with it downhill and usually I'll chicken out early because of that. So, it's more challenging in this respect i.e. to not chicken out and get up the freakin hill. Anyone can use gravity to go downhill. Getting uphill smartly and not losing momentum is harder IMHO. I also have what I call my nemesis climb. It's about 100m long and it is like a rut in the hill from being rained out, almost like a creek bed. About 2/3rds of the way up, it gets really tight and it is the steepest portion. I have to go between two really big rocks, where my pedals would hit them if I'm too close. So, this path is relatively tight and has basically only one way to get through it. The strangest thing is, there are always 2 or three smaller rocks that seem to magically move every time I go up it. Maybe because of other riders or rain from the days before. But, depending on how they are situated, I usually lose all momentum and have to stop. No way I can get over or between them. I'm not good enough a rider. But, trying each time to master this one section is soo much fun. Frustrating most of the time, but the times I get through without stopping is like a really big rush and so enjoyable. This is what also makes eMTBs so fantastic. I wouldn't even be riding, if it weren't for my eMTB!!!

Its so interesting that E-mtb's have made people actually like climbing better than descending. Myself and everybody i ride with think of them purely as an easier way to get to the top ready for another descent. Do you think they will branch out and start making some bikes that are more dedicated to tough/big adventure climbs, and others that are purely downhill focused? (minus being able to pedal up a bike park fire road)

Agree on mindset. Confidence in your bike and yourself plays a huge part in success.

I prefer to sit on all my climbs, for me sitting allows me to keep a steady fast cadence for a longer amount of time. I only stand up if my cadence starts to drop so low that the bike is about to stall, if so I quickly stand up and put the power down than get back in the seated position when possible.
@lozetchells91642 ай бұрын
Agreed. As soon as you stand, it's so much harder to keep traction. Also, dropping your seat helps stop you looping out but what Jonesy didn't say is that it also kills your available leg power. So it's a balance.

Down is the most fun but climbing technical stuff is pretty rad too.

Another great mention is back brake control, or wheelie management. Getting comfortable with the front wheel coming up, riding it out, or lofting at will, controlling and using its power is an absolute necessity on an EMTB climb. Also, knowing where the bikes' balance point is at, at the moment. Looping out on a steep long climb can carry some consequences. Last, learning to pivot turn, under power, on the rear wheel. This skill is the equivalent to learning the endo turn, downhill. Climbing an EMTB is truly its own skill set. Somewhere between moto and mtb, as it should be. Great fun, great challenge, and rewarding.

Great video thank you. I have one question, please: Tyre pressures? Iwould have thought these would be very important also?. Cheers.

I mainly sit on the climb and lower seat feel I have more balance, getting into right gear before tech climb and appropriate power level, e-mtb great for riding local technical uphill features, great advice thanks for sharing Steve and EMBN.

Both Up&Down , always with emphasis on style&flow not speed 'till crash. What i would ad to your different tricks is moving your body center of gravity back and forth to lift your frontwheel and/or securing rear wheel grip and after that, pulling up your rear wheel. In short, rocking the bike to get over whatever could stop your flow&style .All while keepin' your feet-on-pedal.

Great stuff! All those skills are basic mountain biking skills, other than knowing what cadence your motor works best at! Honestly that’s all just old school mountain biking.

All ex dirtbikers prefer uphill, on a motorbike the downhill is just backbdown to climb again
@bradsanders69542 ай бұрын
Uphill and downhill both, an EMTB is that step in between dirtbike and mt bike. The weight makes the EMTB super stable and can really be railed down rough downhills. I put the seat halfway down and go flat out aiming for berms.....................too much fun!
