What would you take for a long ride in your trail pack?

Out of curiosity I just emptied my riding pack, an Osprey Raptor 14. Much is the same; multitool, tube, tire tools/quik link pliers, spare AXS battery, spare quik links, zip ties, Lezyne pump (metal body, long hose) and a tubeless plug kit. Some additions I consider must haves are: toilet paper, bug spray (this was a life saver on one ride), rain jacket (weather changes quickly in Montana, I have been snowed on several times in July when it was warm to start) and a very basic 1st aid (small roll of gauze, wound closure strips, 2 big band aids, antibiotic ointment, a small roll of tape and Ibuprofen). I have used all of this stuff when not having it would have been real bad, especially the TP. Used the tape once to keep a friend's kneecap in place so we could get to the car and the hospital. This pack is always going on my rides, no matter if it is a 2 hr local or a 6 hr ass kicker. Oh, and food. Granola bars and a couple of jells at least. I ride several bikes so tying stuff to the bike is really not an option. Grab the pack and out the door. Simple. Is the pack hot in the summer? Yup. Live with it. Plenty of water. In the winter I have spare gloves, beanie and extra layers. That little Topeak ratchet kit does tempt me, at least have it in my car tool kit. Might be a bit heavy.

I started in 1988 i was 29. Fixed more tube flats than I want to remember. Knock on wood Ive only flatted a hand full of times after going tubeless 15 or so years ago. We been riding a long time steve. Im 65 this year and still racing DH and ebike enduros. Happy Trails

Hey gents having additional weight on your hips is worse than distributing the weight across your shoulders your back is just along for the ride. Another thing is when you crash and go over the bars and you land on your back you got a built in safety pad. I’m 66 and having an occasional bad back a backpack is much better for me.

That was a classic episode! I was laughing enough that I had to rewind it a few times. Steve throwing the pack was so funny. I have many of those tools and have yet to need them. I was however on a ride and a young woman was on the side of the trail 15 miles from the car park with a broken chain on a push bike, so I stoped to help and realized that I didn’t have chain tool. Not much I could do so I waited and flagged down another rider who had one. By then my hands were all greasy, no towel. Who brings a towel anyway? I like Steve have been lucky but have gone through 2 batteries and two motors on my Turbo Levo. All those tools are not much help are they? any way thanks as always for the great entertainment.

Steve and Owen are great. Video was hilarious, like Steve hasn't seen a new bit of kit in forever. The Topeak ratchet is a great piece of kit, I really like using mine, I have the Silca and I like the feel and usability of the Topeak better. The Silca feels like you can lose key pieces easier. The new Peaty's tire vavles come with caps that one can remove the valve core and the other can tighten a spoke.

Steve said it out loud. I said it out loud back on halloween, next day, the sidewall split open on my tire 7 miles into a ride. Split right at the seam!

When I raced enduro and rally raid I had my tool kit finely tuned - I probably used it for others bikes at least as often as my own. Since taking up EMTB I haven't needed more than a multi-tool - that'll be the kiss of death so about time I sorted out my tool kit. I would also include some insulating tape, a selection of cable ties and some spare nuts and bolts in case you lose one on the trail. A small first aid kit and something to help keep warm should you need to wait for assistance is also worth carrying.

essential things to take with you if you have a belt driven bike ! Yep a spare belt, as I found out on boxing day , glad I did take one when it snapped out on the moors. Steve take one when your on the Nicolia bike.

Nice video boys, so personal choice for bladder or bottles, those power levers look fantastic, that ratchet roll or multi tool are pretty much a given, plugs & a mullet tube plus either a pump that excepts canisters or an electric mini-pump (doubles as a pressure gauge), tyre boots looks easy, I'd include some cable ties & latex gloves. BUT brake pads??

One more thing if your running a mullet set-up Schwalbe makes a 27.5/29 combo tube so your covered front and back if you rip a sidewall. Have done it 2x and poppin the tire and using these tubes saved my a.. and prevented a long walk/ push back.

When I change brake pads and they still have some life, I stash them wrapped in a little plastic bag for emergency spares. Never actually needed to swap while out on the trail but doesn't cost me anything.

Every flat I've had tubeless has lead to a long walk out. I seem to have the propensity to put holes in my tires that are the wrong size for the strips of bacon I carry. I'm using the Fox Hip Pack. I carry quite a bit of gear including a Silky...

Just buy a OneUp EDC Tool and throw one in your steerer tube... chaintool, allen keys, chain links, torx, spoke keys, valve tool, tyre lever, and a capsule for storing a couple of quid for a pint after the ride... job's a good'n!

The Topeak multitool that they use in the start of the video features a quick link removal tool and space for a spare quick link , no need for those big Topeak spare ones, get pedros is ones instead, much better

True, you could go smaller on the lever front, but bear in mind your casings! We run a lot of stuff beads around here so the bigger the levers (to a certain extent) the better

Informative video. I lust after that combo chain pliers, tire (tyre? ;o) levers, spare link container. DUCEDLY clever, wot? I know, Americans should never try to imitate British English. I clean my Camelbak hydration bladder and hose every 2nd use with CLOROX household chlorine and rinse THOROUGHLY. The best bike daypacks I've seen are from OSPREY. They come in two sizes and a rainbow of colors.

With a mullet wheel set up, what size tube do you take or take one of each size

Scorpion tubes are insanely pricey, the same thing can be done with a Ridenow tube . People now wear these backpack/Camelbaks, maybe you've heard of them. Lots of water right at hand.

Those Topeak tyre levers just snap as soon as you put any decent force through them in my experience. Nice idea but the plastic is too weak/brittle.

I carry tube, Co2 cartridge, levers, derailer hanger, master link, piece of chain, brake pads, derailer cable, tire boot, brake rotor bolt, shoe cleat bolt, mini tool, chain breaker, 1st aid kit, valve stem core, spare AXS battery. I'm going to try the Smart Tubes. Had the Tubolito's at one time, but the seam split while in my pack. What the? Threw them away, and would NEVER recommend those.

I have a vendetta against bladders, I always forget to get all the water out, and a week later I will have mold in it, id rather carry 4 water bottles than 1 bladder.
@embn
@embn 17 күн бұрын
Fair enough, they're not for everyone! If you've got an airing cupboard then a wooden spoon in it propped up can solve those problems!
@JonHolden
@JonHolden 17 күн бұрын
I'd check your water quality if you're actually getting mold after only a week. Also, a 2-3 minute soak with a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar is usually all you need to clean out stale water taste and smell.

I have never had mold in a bladder and I rarely clean it. I did use the vinegar trick many years ago.

Refill 1/3 to 1/2 after your ride and freeze it. Add water before the ride and you have cold water for the ride. No mold or anything can grow at sub zero Fahrenheit in the freezer.
@Riley880

You missed the point I am to lazy to clean it properly, and it gets tossed in the back of my car, then when I want to use it I have to deep clean it. A water bottle is way easier to keep clean.
