When I was picking out a new bike this winter, I had a clear idea: Again, it had to have a Bosch motor with a very clever eMTB mode again. Because with it, any fiddling with modes is actually pointless. I use the eMTB mode practically 100% of the time. Well tuned. ⚡

my non-ebike friends don't understand that I still get a workout on my ebike. I just cover a lot more distance at a higher speed than I normally would. The wind from riding at a higher speed on the ebike actually allows me to push my heart rate even harder than on a regular bike because I won't overheat as easily (very helpful in 90+ degree heat in Texas).

I second this comment. I have been on several rides in temps over 100F (38C) and the Ebike makes a big difference. On a traditional mtb, I just ride until my legs cramp up because of the heat and humidity, even while consuming loads of salt and water. The emtb allows me to do so much more in the high heat and humidity.

I do 95% of my ride in Eco. I still love the effort of climbing but at this stage in my life, I simply can't ride all of the hills any more. To me, the ebike meant continuing to enjoy mountain biking or likely walking away. It's reinvigorated my love of riding again and ha even transferred gains to my o Road riding. A literal win-win for me.

@@rayglasscock9667 I think you misunderstood me. Now, if I understood your non-punctuated comment correctly, here's my reply. What I meant to say is that without my e-bike, I cannot climbs the hills any more. However, in ECO mode, I now can climb most of the hills. For those I can't in Eco mode, I go to Tour mode, and only once or twice have I needed the Turbo mode to get up a hill. I like climbing but "without the assist", even in the better shape that I'm in now that I have the e-bike, I just cannot make the hills that I used to cruise up in my younger and healthier days. Having done for a decent ride yesterday on my e-bike, and even with the e-bike, my knees are giving me some complaints today:( Without the e-bike, I just wouldn't go to that park any more, and that would be sad.

I tuned my Turbo Levo Eco mode to 30 support and 50 power and pretty much live in that mode using the gears to adjust for terrain. Trail mode is set at 50/80 but I struggle to keep the front tire on the ground with that much power if climbing on a trail (trail and even boost [100/100] are most useful on really steep mountain roads). I’ve only used boost on straight up smooth trails (not the rocky or rooty twisty trails Vermont is known for).

I used to ride on EMTB all the time but now I ride mostly in Tour mode. But that is mostly to extend the range on my 625 wh battery. The range I can get on Tour is around 60km with 1000D+ in dry conditions, but I have a Radon Render which is pretty heavy. Eco is only on flats and when the battery is almost empty as I feel you even have more resistance than with a normal bike.

My regular ride (Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park) is 21.5 miles with 2500 feet of total elevation gain. I always use Eco on the flat, Trail for the climbs, and Gravity for the descents. I have been considering an emtb for some time and have been going through these videos for information. This video was extremely informative and may stop me from going down this route. I had a mild heart attack 17 months ago and thought my mtb days were over until I spotted some bikers riding up a hill I used to cycle up seemingly without effort. I was looking forward to see how easy an emtb could make a climb as part of my rehabilitation. I was disappointed to see your heart rate figures for the boost mode with minimum effort were as high as 131 average with 185 max. I was hoping for a 100-110 average with maybe a 131 max. Is it possible you could have got up with less effort or should I consign my thoughts of fun rehabilitation to the bin?

I’m not an expert, but, what I have learned is that different ebikes work differently, have different power range adjustability etc. so his ebike may work you harder than others on the market. Something you may want to research before dismissing the idea is the Specialized Levo line of bikes. They have a feature, that caused me to buy one, as I have a tachycardia issue, is heart rate mode. So you sync your heart rate monitor to it and it will increase or decrease assistance based on your heart rate to keep you in your set zone. And remember you have 12 gears, just like an analog bike on top of the boosts that he wasn’t utilizing for the test that I saw, and he did the relaxed tests last, so his heart rate was already elevated. I don’t get my bike until tomorrow, so haven’t done full testing on it, but when the store let me demo it I found it made a huge difference. So maybe test ride a few, or rent one and see. I wouldn’t dismiss it based on a video targeted at healthy people with the intent of letting them know that can still get a workout in all modes, as it doesn’t mean you can’t go easier if you need to.

@@azarialr6639 Thanks for your very full response. I was aware of different bikes, motors, power range and adjustability. I don't think Chris was genuine when he said minimum effort, which again is a subjective description. I wasn't aware of the ability of some bikes to adjust the assistance according to heart rate. That is something I will look into and a special thank you for that nougat. I have looked at hiring but have only found locally bikes with the less powerful motors. I am still adjusting my meds, so will get that sorted first.

@Google Account Really not so sure - particularly given I have ridden both. What I would concede is that if you sit back in boost and rely on the motor then yeah you will get nothing. Not sure why you say I'm talking rubbish, on runs that are downhill (slight declines) the motor does nothing, it tops out to fast. I still cant beat some of my times downhill - doubt I will as well.😁

Tell your analogue or “acoustic” MTB bros that you know someone who rides a single speed for MTB rides AND an EMTB in between those rides on recovery days or for aerobic training days. That would be me lol. EMTB’s enables us to ride more and offer the ability to train while riding. The hidden beauty of EMTB’s, for those of us who value the workout and cardio fitness, is the ability to keep your heart rate within the aerobic zone for endurance training (Specialized offers this feature on their ebikes, not sure about others). That has been a game changer for me.💗

@@leefunkera Yeah, I've done more riding since I wrote that and for sure ECO mode is a bit more power than equalizing the weight of the e-drive. What I've also learned is, if I want to get the heart rate going a bit more, in situations where holding 25kph is easy, like going down wind or slightly down hill, I pedal out of the 25 kph and go a bit faster. I lose the support of the e-motor and pedal a while like that. I get to go faster and get some pump going too. Nice. :)

Right on, I can't figure out why someone buys an emtb and wants to ride it like it's a mtb either. My levo is always on turbo, sometimes trail for tough climbs where turbo is braking loose too much. Seems to depend on what sport you lean toward or come from, mtbers want to ride it like a bicycle, dirtbikers just want this thing to go. And I could care less about the workout, I ride for the fun.
@rawmancemtb
@rawmancemtb 2 жыл бұрын
@@riprockenx6592 Emtb tends to make heartrate more equal and making it a better workout. Normally climbing I either don't or when I can just rotate at the lowest speed to conserve energy. But with an ebike it allows you to link it all together and keep heart rate constant instead of keeping it as possible on a normal mtb. But then on asphalt and fireroad climbs it does tend to make it easier so you aren't really pushing the limit to improve. It's just different.
