I read Josh's book in 2007 and I know about his Buddhist teachings, but I'm unclear on the style of meditation he uses and why he prefers that technique.

exactly, not clear what his first principles are, I have heard him recommend simple sitting meditation and following your breath but not sure what he uses

All different techniques lead to the same result. A calm and clear mind. The techniques are just different tools to use for different occasions to achieve the same result. That’s why it’s valuable to practice multiple techniques so that when one doesn’t feel as effective, you can use another! I would recommend first learning simple breathing meditation, and then you can learn more advanced techniques like open eye meditation.

There are some limitations with having religious views. If you truly want a beginners mind you have to be willing to put all other previously learned ideas aside and truly try to understand a completely different perspective. Generally if you are religious, you don’t ever try to learn about other religions. You may read a little about them but never try to understand them. This is just 1 example of how it can distort what you truly take in and how you see the world. It’s a habit really. Never challenging your own ideas of being possibly wrong is a limitation that can carry over into other areas of learning. This was the best way to put it without seeming too offensive with the other reasons.
